To have pomped my horn?

Will try and keep this quick Grin but I’m so annoyed by the car park stand off I’ve just had that I need to know AIBU?

So, I’ve just been parked up in a dark car park, in a dark coloured car, no lights on. Another car pulls up and starts to reverse into the space right next to me, which is a disabled spot so huuuuge, and with plenty of other spaces around. Car reverses at a funny angle, at speed, and VERY close to my car, so close both passenger and me think it’s going to make contact.

I pomp my horn, car keeps coming so I lean on horn. Driver peers round at me shouting and gesticulating. She finishes parking (with me and passenger both wincing), winds window down and starts having a go.

Apparently I’m BU to have pomped as she has reversing cameras so knew I was there. My stand point is; you were literally an inch away from my car (when there’s two whole empty spaces to play with), I don’t know you have cameras, I was warning you that I was there. Car accidents happen every single day so I was making sure you didn’t hit me. She thought this was a ridiculous point and can obviously drive properly as she has passed her test Hmm, “people wouldn’t pass their test if they didn’t know how to park”.

I’m so annoyed by her attitude, but she clearly thought I was completely ridiculous. I think it would have been ridiculous for me to have sat in my car and just allowed her to reverse into it. So Mumsnet, AIBU?

My current car is the first I've had with a reversing camera, and it's absolutely not useful for reversing into a car park space. The first few times I tried I nearly hit the cars either side. I no longer use it in that scenario.

The camera tells you how far you from the back of the space, it tells you next to nothing about how far you from the cars either side of you.

I find my camera is only useful for getting very close to the car behind when parallel parking. It's only useful over very short distances where you know you are reversing in a straight line and there's no possibility of hitting things to the sides.

It's possible that other cameras are better though, mine isn't one of the clever ones that shows a curved path linked to how much you've turned the steering wheel.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 14/04/2021 11:17

Who put the pomp in the pomp-pomp-pomp?

Does your car horn make farting sounds? Or did you stand in the dark car park and let rip a huge fart to make the other driver aware of your presence?

Surely the very nature of the sound all car horns make is that it's completely indistinguishable from a highly-amplified bum-trombone from the driver?

"Parp! Parp! Went Noddy's car/buttocks" - pick your own ending!

I'm always surprised at how many people routinely reverse out of their drives rather than in to them, though - I'd say about 95% from personal observation. It's much safer to reverse in and then drive out - otherwise, as PP have said, you can have two drivers trying to look over their shoulders and not realising that they're both in pompetition for the same small piece of road.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 14/04/2021 11:21

It's a bit annoying that some people on here are castigating OP for using a perfectly normal regional term for her and telling her that she is 'wrong' to do so. Please don't try to artificially restrict the richness of the language.

Regional variations are to be celebrated, gleefully enjoyed and adopted when you learn a new one - not smacked down and criticised.

Devlesko · 14/04/2021 11:24

I'm in Lancashire and we say peeped. Grin
Anyway YANBU, that's what the horn is for, to make people aware you are there if you think they haven't seen you.

Ah, now I really like your newly coined word pompetition and might steal it. 🤣

Thank you for the pompliment Grin

You are welcome. 😃

Pomped Grin

But no YANBU, you have every right to protect yourself and your car from being hit, it would be too late afterwards. The "I wouldn't have passed my test if I couldn't park" is the stupidest statement I ever heard. There are PLENTY of people who passed their tests who can't park for shit. Anyway, she's annoyed that you implied she couldn't park, tough shit, you were protecting yourself and your property

AryaStarkWolf · 14/04/2021 11:37

TBF I did second guess myself but the only other terminology I could think of was ‘sounded my...’ and I thought who the fuck says that in real life

I would say Beeped and I've heard Honked as well but I'm glad you pomped, it's a great word!

When I bought my (not small) car, 10+ years ago, the only way to get a sunroof (which I wanted) was to have a reversing camera (which I didn’t). I asked how much it would be to remove/disable it and the salesman couldn’t understand why I’d want to. Can genuinely say I’ve never used it. If you know how big your car is and some basic mathematical mechanics, and turn your head in the direction you’re moving you should be able to visualise it in your head. I can get into any space so long as it’s around a foot longer than the car (parallel) or 6 inches wider (reverse). How? 2 hours with my dad the day I bought my first car in an empty car park practicing every kind of reverse parking there is. Has come in handy thousands of times in the intervening 25 years! Far more so than a stupid camera.

I drove DH’s car through necessity the other day. It had the absolute cheek to quieten the stereo when the car was put into reverse. Angry

Marmaladeagain · 14/04/2021 11:39

I'm a confident reverser and park easily in tiny places - it does unnerve others that aren't as quick at manoeuvring.

I understand people getting anxious when I pull up and what looks like too small a space and I then reverse into etc - if it get a "bib"... then I acknowledge the person, smile and look confident and proceed.

When I get out might even wave at their shocked face... Grin but yes some are nervous and I'll acknowledge that. If they're angry that's their problem...

You say it was a large gap and so sound like reversing a bit haphazardly so they should definitely acknowledge why they're quite so close. When kids were younger we did say "parp" in a nod, so to speak, to Noddy - but it's back to "bib" now.

Marmaladeagain · 14/04/2021 11:43

can't say I use the cameras - too busy looking at the space, around me etc and the car - they're a pain IMO and over react etc.

Some drivers may need them but I also think could be distracting and miss other things going on around you. They over react so much that you ignore them and boy who cries wolf and all that.

BluePeterVag · 14/04/2021 11:45

Op you’re my new favourite person for being such a good sport and introducing me to the bloody marvellous world of pomping a horn. YANBU.

Today we are in Preston for the word pomping championships! Grin

I use a variety of phrases for using the horn, depending upon the pomp and circumstance of the occasion and which car I am in, as the horns are different.
My MPV has a deep and disapproving sounding horn. DH’s Honda has a ridiculous little horn. First time I used it, I was embarrassed at the pathetic noise it made compared to my car’s horn. No way was Mr BMW with his wanky driving feel warned by that stupid sound. “Peep peep please be careful” and not the “watch out asshole” message I wanted to send.
To give someone a parping = to use the horn in a way that is equivalent of farting at them to express displeasure at their driving when warning them of my presence.
To give someone the horn = two fingers to you for nearly causing a collision
Toot or pip the horn = the stupid Honda sound. Think Thomas the Tank Engine and a happy little ending sound versus
Beeping the horn = pissed off sounding, perhaps Gordon.
Blasting the horn is full on leaning on it
Grin
Loving the regional variation, long may it continue.

HoppingPavlova · 14/04/2021 11:46

Gosh, I’ve only ever Beeped or Honked but from now on I’m going to Pomp.

BluePeterVag · 14/04/2021 11:48

@TomHardyAndMe My car stops the stereo when reversing. What fool invented that idea! Angry

What we actually need is a boxing glove which emerges from the steering column and whacks any driver who thinks they're so proficient that it's fine if they use a mobile phone whilst driving.

HopeHappy · 14/04/2021 12:08

I love this thread! Grin

Going back to the point at hand though, you were not unreasonable to have hooted (Southerner here!).

I once hooted at a pedestrian that stepped straight out in front of my car without looking. She thumped my car so I wound the window down and said "what the hell?! You walked out in front of me - what was I supposed to do - mow you down?!" Her reply?

"Well, you needn't have hooted so loudly!" Grin Confused I apologised for my horn not having a volume control!

I think it's safe to say I scared the crap out of her and she was rightfully embarrassed about the whole thing. Hopefully she looked more closely before she crossed the road next time!

Milkand2sugarsplease · 14/04/2021 12:18

I'm a Lancashire lass and we use pomped in my area. Or honked.
Never heard of some of the others though.

Elouera · 14/04/2021 12:18

I've looked up pomped and there is no reference to a horn in any dictionary!

Why use such a little used, regional word, when you could say honk, peep, peep, blow or sound the horn??? Surely this is joke?

thenameshastings · 14/04/2021 12:24

Did you snap and pomp 😂

TomHardyAndMe · 14/04/2021 12:44

Same tw$t who decided dashboards should light up even without the car’s lights being on, and that DRLs should only be on the front.

(Here in Wales where it rains/drizzles 80% of the time the number of drivers pootling down the M4 in grey cars oblivious to the fact that they are completely invisible to everyone behind them is staggering. Angry)

Aprilinspringtimeshower · 14/04/2021 12:44

@Alloftheboys

Read the title and thought “shouldn’t this be moved to the sex/relationships forum?”
Ok..I admit just looked up pomped on google...still don’t get it😳 I’m up north and would use it in that context...

So what is the other context ( god it’s embarrassing to admit I don’t know) 😳😳🤦‍♀️

Nightbear · 14/04/2021 12:47

’Why use such a little used, regional word’

Because you’re from that area and it’s totally normal language to you?

OhSayWhat · 14/04/2021 12:55

@Hotelhelp

It’s peeped or beeped FYI
Peeped?! 😅

Who would it be a joke? I'm sure you could have figured out what OP meant.
