To Think Other Customers Should Let You Go Before Them If You Only Have Say One Item?

Quite often people do & I will myself, especially if I’ve got a big trolleyful, and I find it annoying if people don’t. A woman in Aldi this morning saw that I only had some microwave steam bags but never budged!

Am I being unreasonable?

I always let people go before me when they have like one or two and I have a trolley full, people rarely let me go but yesterday a lady let me through as I was buying popcorn for my 5 year old and he decided he needed to pee.

You don’t know what’s going on her life or how big a rush she’s in. Of course it’s nice if people are able to let you go ahead, but you’re not entitled to it.

I always let people go ahead of me but there’s every chance the person in question was in a world of her own and didn’t think. Most people are dealing with their own shit.

Yes it's nice if they do but I don't think you can go around expecting it and get annoyed if they don't.

Who knows? That person who has just one item may hold up the queue if, say, there was no barcode on the item; or they started fishing around in their bag for coupons or loose change to pay for it and then I would hastily regret my kind action

No queue like everyone else.

I think its nice if you can but as you dont know what they have going on you cannot insist anyone does anything

I usually do, but on some occasions three or four people with one or two items have turned up, each one just as I was about to put my stuff through, so I’ve given up and put my stuff through after the third one as I’d been there a while! The fourth person probably thought I wasn’t selfish!

I agree it is nice and I do it myself but it isn't compulsory.

It's very difficult. I have done this only to find the 'empty' shopping bag on the person's arm was also full of stuff so they never had one item at all. Grin

I'll happily let them go ahead if they ask, I can't say I've ever really paid to what the person behind me is buying. Did you ask?

It’s nice if someone does let someone go in front if they only have 1 or 2 items but they don’t have to.

I lined up for 25 minutes the other day with 3 items while 2 people in front of me had a trolley full each, yes it would have been great if they had let me go in front but they didn’t...it was fine I survived and lived to tell the taleGrin

I always do, but I don’t think it should be an expectation.

Its a nice gesture if they do, mostly they don't notice or have their own shit to get on with. No big deal really.

Changingwiththetimes · 11/04/2021 13:41

Yes I would, but with social distancing you can't always see what someone behind you has. I generally use self scan now anyway.

You have to queue like everyone else.

I wish Aldi and Lidl had Scan as you Shop, I would go more often if I could avoid the checkout mayhem. Full trolleys seems to be the norm.
Lidl has serve yourself tills which is progress if you only want a pint of milk.

If someone allows you to go ahead it is done as a courtesy, they are not obliged to.

If I have a full trolley, I have just started unloading it on the checkout as the person in front has finished and someone comes up with a couple of items/small basket then I will offer to let them go ahead since it won't hold me up and actually gives me more time to unload and organise my shopping.

If however I'm pretty much done and just waiting for the person in front to move from the end of the till then you will have to wait like everyone else, especially if there are self scan machines that are empty - if you're in that much of a rush then you can use the self scan machine, if you don't want to do that then you will have to wait in a queue like everyone else.

Getting annoyed by someone not doing this is the unreasonable thing here.

UserTwice · 11/04/2021 13:44

I'll let one or two people with only the odd item ahead of me in the queue. But when the third person comes up I won't let them ahead of me as I figure I've been generous enough. They tend to glare at me and probably think me rude.

You've no idea what else went on before you got there.

That's me too! Would be there all day, so I stick to just letting 2 people go through now.

I usually ask if that's all they've got and if they say yes let them go in front. Just in case their partner comes running along to join them with a full basket!

I don't expect it from others and I wouldn't ask. It's a nice thing for people to offer but you don't know what the person in front of you has got on their shoulders.

I always let someone through if I notice. But sometimes if you're loading up the belt you just don't notice. Or you might even glance at them and they think you've noticed, but your mind is somewhere else. Most people have something going on in their lives that they're stressing about, to a greater or lesser extent. So it's nice if they do but I'm not bothered if they don't.

I always do for elderly or disabled or mum with small, whiney children but otherwise,if someone is not asking I do not.
I will never ask myself,I will find a shorter queue or go to self-checkout.

So YABMU.
