To Think Other Customers Should Let You Go Before Them If You Only Have Say One Item?

Quite often people do & I will myself, especially if I’ve got a big trolleyful, and I find it annoying if people don’t. A woman in Aldi this morning saw that I only had some microwave steam bags but never budged!

OP posts:

Am I being unreasonable?

I'd never ask or expect to be let through first though I usually go to a small metro store for 1 or 2 things rather than an Aldi.

I occasionally let some one through depending on how much time I've got and what my kids are like! I once let a teenage lad through in front of me and the woman behind me went absolutely nuts so I had to spend the entire time at the tills listening to some idiot calling me for everything. He was buying a packet of biscuits and it didn't change her queue position at all.

@CliftonGreenYork one item can be essential...toilet roll, baby formula, a pot noodle if that’s all the food you can afford that day...

But not a microwave steam bag.

@Pugdoglife

If someone says "do you mind if I just pop in first? I've only got this" I let them in. Otherwise I don't even notice what the person behind me has, I'm just focused on my own shopping.

I had a woman do this to me in Poundland. She said to me she had one item, could she go first. She was quite put out when I said no. I only had 3 items myself 😂

I always do in Aldi because I usually need the extra time to load my shopping onto the conveyor before they throw it back at me 😳

Havehope21 · 11/04/2021 18:45

Depends on my mood tbh, if I am having a good day and feel like being kind, I will. If my day has been utterly crap, I am probably too busy feeling sorry for myself to notice what anyone else is buying. Also, masks make it more difficult to actually look too closely (mine always rises up into my eyes somehow!).

@CliftonGreenYork fair point, I missed that part of the OP Grin

It's a nice thing to do and I would probably do it in most circumstances but I don't think you can say someone is wrong or unreasonable if they don't.

She could have been in a rush or already waited a long time or keen to get out due to covid or parking or anything at all.

You sound a bit entitled to create a thread because she didn't let you in ahead of her.

SisterAgatha · 11/04/2021 19:25

It’s nice when it happens but not expected.

Slightly different but similarly annoying, I got to a queue with a lady in front that was doing masses of shopping. I had the three kids, two of whom are screaming toddlers and I only had maybe 2 items. I didn’t expect to go in front, she was already being served. There was a shop worker directing people to the tills so she fully saw my situation. Just looked at me sympathetically.

Another lady turned up, and the same worker said to her “let’s open another till for you” and promptly opened the till next to the one I was in and served the other lady who had come up behind me. While I’m stood there with screaming children dripping off me and only two items and I got there before the lady who had a whole new till opened for her. I cried. Said to the worker I really wish you’d said that to me when you saw me waiting here Sad

It might be because of the number of people queuing eg when there is a third person they open a new checkout.
Northernsoulgirl45 · 11/04/2021 19:49

Reminds me of the day I had 4 items and saw a free till. Arrived at exactly the same time as a woman with an overflowing trolley. Who promptly started unloading. I ended up joining another queue and still got out before her. U thought she was rude.

SisterAgatha · 11/04/2021 19:49

It wasn’t that. The worker even said, sorry you’re right. I should have opened it earlier or let you go ahead as you were here first.

Even so, I’ve seen maybe 20 people queuing with no new tills opened.

ElderMillennial · 11/04/2021 19:59

I suppose it's just luck sometimes SisterAgatha
