To ask her to change it?

I’m 7 months pregnant and DH and I finally have a girls name we love. It’s pretty unusual and we don’t know a single person with it. It’s something like 900th in popularity. We haven’t told anyone this name.

My friend just got a new puppy last week and posted a picture on Facebook of it announcing this same name! I immediately messaged her and said I was really sorry but that was the name we had chosen for our DD and can she choose something else. She just did the laughing emoji react to my message and then sent back “Haha that’s hilarious we chose the same one! It is a cool name though!”. She didn’t agree to change it, that’s all she said. But I assumed she understood and would do the decent thing.

Anyway today she posted again on Facebook that she had made an Instagram account for this puppy... and the name was still the same!!! What should I message her next? I thought she understood last time and now it’s just awkward to have to say it again

So you don't know the sex of your baby yet? But you're upset in case you do have a girl... It will be fine to name her after the dog your chosen name, if you do end up with a girl. Try not to fret.

LaurieFairyCake · 08/04/2021 16:54

I promise that it doesn't matter how ugly or hairy your kid is, they won't confuse it with a dog called Eleri...

I triple promise

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 08/04/2021 16:55

Ah, people are being a bit mean.

I'm sorry for you, OP. When you're pregnant things do take on greater meaning and I can genuinely see why this would have been a shock. It's so hard choosing a baby name in the first place.

On the radio today there was a woman on a phone in who had a puppy named Freya. I thought that was a bit weird because it's clearly a popular girls name and not one I associate with a dog.

People will forget about your friends puppy soon - even it it's got it's own Insta page, people get bored.

Stick with your beautiful name and try to put your friends dog-baby out of your mind 🥰

Leprechaunsundays · 08/04/2021 16:55

If we have a boy this time we’ll still keep the girls name for next time. I really thought nobody else would pick it as it was so unusual. I feel like now she’s picked it for her dog and even made an Instagram account for the dog, it might become more popular now because other people will have heard of it. So not only has she ruined it for this baby, but also for our next baby in case we don’t have a girl this time,

I actually think she maybe found out somehow even though we never told anyone.

@Leprechaunsundays

I’m just really upset because it took us so long to find a name like that and now if we do have a DD (we’re not finding out the gender until birth) she has to share it with a dog!! I just thought being my friend she would respect my wishes
Eh???
LostArcher · 08/04/2021 16:55

@Wolfiefan . My son is rather sad that I wasn't brave enough to call him Wulfric (Woolfie for short). He'd have made a good Wulfric.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 08/04/2021 16:55

Hmm smack in the middle of this thread has appeared a dog food ad. Clever marketing person or genuine poster 🤔

ButterflyHoneyPot · 08/04/2021 16:55

My fathers dog and my daughter both have the same name. Only time it was confusing was when DD thought she was being shouted on instead of the dog when she was 2. After the first 2-3 times she started looking at me to see if she’d been called Grin

Dog had the name first, for 2 years before DD came along. Didn’t stop us, though we did choose a different spelling.

Milkand2sugarsplease · 08/04/2021 16:56

So friend didn't know what you'd chosen and coincidentally chose the same name,..?

Why do you think you have more right to the name meaning she should change it? She's just as entitled to use the name as you are, surely?

TheCraicDealer · 08/04/2021 16:56

Did you pick the name because it's "unusual" or because you both really love it?

If it's the former, striving for uniqueness is a waste of time as PP's have pointed out above, and if it's the second, the name of a dog should hardly put you off.

I can guarantee that Instagram will be posted on with decreasing regularity once the dog gets out of the cute puppy stage and/or the friend has her own kids. Same story with all the ones friends/acquaintances of mine have set up.

OwlBeThere · 08/04/2021 16:56

I had SUCH a hard time thinking of a boys name for my last baby abs then when I did find one we both loved, a friend announced that she’d picked the same boys name (we were due a few days apart, her first, my fourth) and I wasn’t annoyed because it wasn’t deliberate but I was a bit stressed as it took so long to find one. As it turns out we both had girls anyway 😂

fairydustandpixies · 08/04/2021 16:56

Dear me, you're being a bit precious love! It's a dog - does it matter????

Returnoftheowl · 08/04/2021 16:56

So you don't know if you're having a girl?
Your friend didn't know that you were planning it use that name if you have a girl?

You don't own all rights to a name you might not use.

If I got the same message from one of my friends I'd assume they were joking!

Constance11 · 08/04/2021 16:56

Sorry OP this made me laugh at how bonkers you are being. Of course she shouldn't change it - she may have spent as long choosing the name as you did!

Reinventinganna · 08/04/2021 16:56

Poor little Rover!

Leprechaunsundays · 08/04/2021 16:56

@HarrietSchulenberg

Nobody will care. It sounds as if you think she's stolen your intellectual property. I assume the name was already in existence and you haven't made it up from scratch?

When your child starts school there will probably be 2 others in her class with the same name anyway.

Well there will be now!

One of the very few 100% YABU votes I've seen!! 😂 😂 😂

Reinventinganna · 08/04/2021 16:57

You will lol back on this hormone driven madness in a few years and laugh.

Reinventinganna · 08/04/2021 16:57

Look back not lol (although you will lol)

whisper1991 · 08/04/2021 16:57

This has got to be a joke surely?!

Thank you for understanding! I will be using the name as I’m sure she will come to her senses. We have been friends for years and I can’t believe she would do this

Mylovelyhorsee · 08/04/2021 16:58

@Leprechaunsundays how on earth could she have found out somehow if you told no one!?? You realise you sound barking mad (pun intended)

makingmammaries · 08/04/2021 16:58

Don't tell me you wanted to call her Sheba.

Seriously, OP, this is a bit precious.

vodkaredbullgirl · 08/04/2021 16:59

My lab is called Freya and other is called Jasper.
