Friend who had IVF is an anti-vaxxer

Aibu here?

My friend who has not long ago had IVF doesn’t want the vaccine because she doesn’t want to ‘put chemicals’ into her body yet she’s been pumped full of hormones and drugs during IVF.

Aibu to really really not understand her position. It makes me think of anyone from the 90’s who did pills (ecstasy) saying the same thing. It’s an utterly bonkers view point!

@TheKeatingFive

Well not really. Just look for outbreaks in measles in the UK in recent years.

I don’t know a single child who’s had measles in the last 20 years. It may be growing, but it’s still not very widespread. Out of sight out of mind and all that.

Plus it's to protect those who can't get the vaccines, if everyone had your attitude, there would be no herd immunity.

I never said it was ‘my’ attitude. I’m very pro vax. I was answering the question you posed, the motivations of the person in question don’t strike me as difficult to figure out.

Out of sight, out of mind is a strange attitude to have regarding diseases.

www.gov.uk/government/news/measles-outbreaks-across-england

They do happen, and there was an increase in certain areas in 2018. Thanks to covid, I imagine there may have been a decrease last year in how many children got their routine vaccinations because parents couldn't get appointments. Might not be as out of sight as you think if that isn't caught up on, or if people decide that they know better regarding vaccines.

Osirus · 04/04/2021 11:05

@pinkstripeycat

IVF drugs are really dangerous and can cause hyper ovulation and death. She’s crazy then if she’s an anti vaxer
They’re not “really dangerous”.

Like everything medicinal, there’s always a risk. Every drug has a cost.

PinkiOcelot · 04/04/2021 11:12

@Laughingstock91 ahhh well that’s a different matter.
I can understand her being dubious about this one but not all, that’s just daft!

TheKeatingFive · 04/04/2021 11:16

Out of sight, out of mind is a strange attitude to have regarding diseases.

Just human psychology 🤷‍♀️

JingsMahBucket · 04/04/2021 11:30

@Laughingstock91 YANBU and you’re not taking crazy pills. Somehow you’ve pissed off the overly sensitive IVF folks and they’re trying their damnedest to shoehorn their cause/experience into the argument.

Before anyone says anything, I have a lot of friends who went through IVF and they’re not batshit anti-vaxxers like the OP’s friend. They’d never defend this illogical bullshit like others on here are.

OP, your friend is being a hypocritical idiot and I would even reduce your children’s playtime if possible. I’d be worried they’d catch something from her kids. I’d be concerned about lack of hygiene too since she probably thinks lax cleanliness will “help improve their immune system”.

GoddessKali · 04/04/2021 11:32

Fertility treatment has been fully approved the Vax won’t be until 2023 Hmm

CounsellorTroi · 04/04/2021 11:41

I know people who do shit loads of drugs and booze, but are vegan eco warrior anti vaxxers. People who bang on about the evils of ‘big pharma’ but buy drugs from drug dealers ie. support the drugs trade. My Aunty smokes 20 a day but doesn’t want to ‘put chemicals (the vaccine) in her body’.

Yes I know people who religiously go to the gym in non covid times but still binge drink at the weekends.

Re IVF drugs - I was told I could no longer donate blood because of the ones I took in the 1990s because of CJD risk.

FlyNow · 04/04/2021 11:58

She sounds a bit stupid but I don't think the ivf thing is why. You consent individually to each drug you take, it's not take one, take em all. I tried ecstasy once, I don't have to now get on ice and heroin as well because "what's the difference".

Lulu573 · 04/04/2021 12:10

@Laughingstock91 but your friend not agreeing with you isnt an issue.....

Lastfreakinglegs · 04/04/2021 12:46

None of your business probably

Ilovechinese · 04/04/2021 12:58

Her body her choice, mind your own business! Sick of people trying to push these vaccines on other people! If you believe the jabs work and protect you then you take yours and dont worry about if anyone else has them or not.

littlepattilou · 04/04/2021 13:11

100% YANBU @Laughingstock91

It's like these weirdos conspiracy theorists who claim the vaccine has a 'chip' in it. to track our every move, and control us for the rest of our lives.

Millions of people (almost everyone) goes to the dentist and has an injection at some time or other in their life, for fillings, and tooth removal etc. Also, almost all children have the MMR vaccine, people have several vaccines when they're travelling out of Europe, many people have a tetanus injection every 5 to 10 years, and there are a number of other examples where people have injections.

If the government wanted to 'chip' everyone, they would have done it already. Why the fuck do they think they would only be doing this now? Confused

Nellie850 · 04/04/2021 14:18

@Ilovechinese

Her body her choice, mind your own business! Sick of people trying to push these vaccines on other people! If you believe the jabs work and protect you then you take yours and dont worry about if anyone else has them or not.
But the problem with this mindset is that it absolutely IS other people’s business. We need as many people to take the vaccine as possible. It is not 100% effective. I want everyone to have the vaccine for the same reasons I want everyone to follow the rules now, to protect your Auntie who’s going through chemo, to protect your child that has cystic fibrosis, protect your Grandma who’s frail. For all of these people the vaccine may not work as well. I can’t understand people not taking a vaccine that is safe (and it is safe) the science has been around for years not months as some people think. We do lots of things day in day out to protect others and the planet because we know it is for the greater good, this is no different.
Misshapencha0s · 04/04/2021 16:09

Newsflash - not everyone thinks the same. She is your friend, not an extension of you. She is not obliged to make decisions that please you or seem consistent to you. Is she a good friend to you? This should be your only concern. She is free to choose what she does and what happens to her body. Her choice. You sound like a passive aggressive shit friend.

Ivy455 · 04/04/2021 16:35

@Brunt0n

Yes I think that’s dumb and I also don’t think people should be able to go through IVF and then not vaccinate their kids 😳
That's a disgusting thing to say. So what, you have to tick a box to say you will vaccinate your kids or you can't haver IVF? Since people who conceive naturally have the choice then so should people who have IVF. That is discriminatory.

And yes my naturally conceived daughter has had her jabs bar flu if that's at all relevant.

GhostCurry · 04/04/2021 19:00

“ Yes I know people who religiously go to the gym in non covid times but still binge drink at the weekends.”

...And?

Is this really how people think?

dotdashdashdash · 04/04/2021 19:26

We might have the same friend. Won't vaccinate her child, has had 2 kids via IVF. Won't have covid vaccine. Reasons for not vaccinating - 'chemicals' and not believing that the diseases they protect against are serious. I've distanced myself from her massively.

Loushome · 04/04/2021 20:41

@Botanica
👏 👏 Thankyou for bringing up the factor of inflammation. There is nowhere near as much public awareness of conditions and illnesses linked to this as there should be! xx

willithappen · 04/04/2021 20:42

@dotdashdashdash ever thought maybe your friend has gone through an intense experience and potentially believes that chemicals are the reason for her infertility? Going through it myself, I no longer want to put anything in my body that I don't know what it does. I was monitored completely while taking the IVF drugs.

Also, with all the talk about being unsure of fertility after the vaccine it's no wonder your friend is hesitant about it.

mouldygrapes · 04/04/2021 21:00

What talk is there about being “unsure of fertility after the vaccine”?
There is zero evidence for any effect on fertility for either men or women

www.bmj.com/content/372/bmj.n509

dotdashdashdash · 04/04/2021 21:12

willithappen but it's really easy to find out what the ingredients in a particular vaccine do, both as part of the vaccine and also in the body. It's also easy to find out the interactions between the ingredients and how that changes how they work and what they do.

And no, her infertility has a specific and known cause.

willithappen · 04/04/2021 21:36

@mouldygrapes there is zero evidence right now, but there's no guarantee that further down the line it doesn't affect things
I'll be getting the vaccine before anyone starts to jump down my throat btw, but not yet offered it. However just wanted to put across a very real thought women suffering with infertility can have from it.
There's also zero evidence it doesn't affect fertility yet btw...

@dotdashdashdash that easy is it?

mouldygrapes · 04/04/2021 21:43

@willithappen there’s also zero evidence it causes car crashes. Or thunderstorms.

There was never any plausible explanation as to a mechanism for it affecting fertility. The messaging around conception initially was messy which has led to mixed messaging, confusion and fear.
Long term vaccine side effects are not anticipated- they don’t stick around in the body

Nat6999 · 04/04/2021 22:52

For anyone saying that the virus has killed 150k+ in this country, the virus only killed this number due to the apathy of our government & our dickhead of a PM burying his head in the sand at the start of the pandemic. I can completely understand anyone being wary of having the covid vaccination, the scientists don't know the long term effects of the vaccine. I really hope not but we could find in years to come that it could cause certain types of cancers or other illnesses, nobody has been able to give any cast iron guarantees that this won't happen. My ds was born right in the middle of the MMR scandal & I didn't have him vaccinated for this, he didn't have his MMR until he was 15, by then he had already been diagnosed ASD, had I had him vaccinated as a baby with the MMR & then finding out about the ASD I wouldn't have been able to forgive myself. I know how serious measles is but at the time I couldn't equate measles with a diagnosis of ASD.

Ineedcoffee2021 · 05/04/2021 03:16

Glad your not my friend
