Easter eggs - none left

I've gone to M & S and Sainsbury's this afternoon, and there are no Easter eggs left . Literally none at all. Why??

I have bought kids an extra one this year as it's been such a rubbish year and they won't see relatives etc who would usually get them something so possibly why we are buying more than normal generally
Remember last Easter there was a bit of a debate as to whether they were 'essential' and a bit controversial to only go out for eggs so possibly that's led to an egg stockpile situation this year !?!
I only bought mine last night though . I did one year leave it till Easter Saturday and learnt that there are very few left by then !

thebillyotea · 01/04/2021 23:00

There was a poster going in about buying their kids 2-3 eggs

Oh dear lord, 2 or 3 eggs! How shocking 😂

benorjerry · 01/04/2021 23:00

@Happycat1212

It’s funny how time’s changes as I remember when I was Little my mum use to always buy them after Easter as they were always half price, now they sell out before Easter!
My daughter does that every year! Is it because she lives in Scotland????
MazDazzle · 01/04/2021 23:00

Lots of local bakers and ice-cream shops are using them round here - half an Easter egg with ice-cream, or cheesecake filling and toppings for a huge mark up. Facebook sellers doing their versions too.

I saw someone in Tesco today with her trolley piled high with them!

Moonface123 · 01/04/2021 23:01

Every single year we put Easter Eggs out one week after Xmas and every single year we have same " Wheres all your eggs' come Maundy Thursday.
Most of our eggs were between £1 - £3.00 plus extra offers. That is pretty cheap.

Sparklingbrook · 01/04/2021 23:01

I think it's obvious from this thread that there are eggs if you drive about a bit and go to different shops. But to avoid disappointment and having to do that it's best to buy them as soon as you can.

ImFree2doasiwant · 01/04/2021 23:02

Our sainsbury was picked high with them today.

ImFree2doasiwant · 01/04/2021 23:02

Piled......

How do you reply to that? 'We've sold them all'?

Yes, a friend of mine posted a photo of a box of Easter goodies she'd ordered and there were half eggs filled with cheesecake and topped with icing and more chocolates.
Worried234 · 01/04/2021 23:03

@Chimeraforce

Our local asda got rid of them and today replaced all that with Eid stuff 🙄 Happy Easter
I'm sorry, what??
carrotsx5 · 01/04/2021 23:04

The thing is I don't recall having this issue in the past - hence my terribly lax attitude. I guess I was wondering if it's the lockdown effect.

They had LOADS (entirely full shelves) in my local Sainsburys this afternoon (huge queues to get in, though). Absolutely no hot cross buns, however - I've had to make some!

Wineinthegarden · 01/04/2021 23:04

Loads of eggs but Easter cards were like gold dust. I know a card at Easter is a recent thing and buys into the ridiculous card market but my life would not be worth living if I didn’t give my dm a card and this year involved visiting several shops to get one!

Alsohuman · 01/04/2021 23:05

@carrotsx5

I actually don't remember having this issue in the past! Or maybe I was more organised in previous years I don't think to though... Might have to try Waitrose...
It’s never been like it before. There used to be loads reduced the week after Easter. I can never remember everywhere selling out in the past. I managed to nab one in Morrisons this afternoon but it wasn’t really what I wanted.

You see that's interesting in my M&S this afternoon there were LOADS of hot cross buns. Masses.

Waitrose had loads of Hot Cross Buns-the toffee ones are amazing. I think they sell traditional Hot Cross Buns all year round.

Panicatthegarden · 01/04/2021 23:07

Argh I particularly wanted to get the elephant ones from Lidl, saw them in store one day but thought I'd get them on my next trip in a few days when I'd have more space in my bag. Went back and they didn't have any but I kept putting off buying any others hoping they'd bring out more stock and now we have none Grin

GillBungalow · 01/04/2021 23:07

I work in food supply chain and Easter last year was a total washout.

Volumes have actually been fairly static for nigh on a decade- true that retailers do try and sell out early but on the whole stocks generally last up until the last week, with some stores carrying small leftovers.

Easter 2020 shat on all that. With shoppers still wary of buying 'frivolous' goods, and no one visiting relatives with a token Easter Egg for each child, sales nosedived and I'm pretty sure that all of the top manufacturers were hit with leftover stocks. That can take a huge chunk of profitability- the seasonal market often props up the mainstream brands.

This year, almost every major supplier has under egged against previous years volumes (excuse the pun)

OverTheRubicon · 01/04/2021 23:08

@Sparklingbrook

They have been selling Easter Eggs for months/weeks, it's Good Friday tomorrow with reduced trading hours, and the supermarkets are shut on Sunday so it's a bit like expecting to get a Christmas tree on Christmas Eve...
But I don't eat a Christmas tree or a Christmas present on the 4th of December if I buy it too early! GrinSad
kowari · 01/04/2021 23:09

Really? Who buys Easter Eggs weeks in advance? Just for them to sit there until Easter Sunday...
People who want to make sure they can get what they want when the shops are quiet and well stocked. Unless you literally don't have £2 per child spare until now then why wouldn't you? What is there to gain from waiting?

Tiddlywinkly · 01/04/2021 23:09

My small local M&S Food store had a good few in today, not sure about other places. We got ours a few weeks ago. We stock up on advent calendars in early November too. As someone said up ahead, it's chocolate, it's not going off anytime soon, but it does seem to sell out!

Yes to trying smaller outlets - metros, corner shops, petrol stations. You'll find something.

Sparklingbrook · 01/04/2021 23:09

Now your lack of self control is not the supermarket's fault. Grin

LemonMeringueThreePointOneFour · 01/04/2021 23:10

@FedUpAtHomeTroels

Nothing in the Easter isle at Asda by us either. I bought ours last week. But was shocked to see the isle looking like the locusts have ravaged it.
This is the Polynesian Triangle branch of Asda, presumably...?
Sparklingbrook · 01/04/2021 23:10

I get advent calendars the minute they appear in the shops. My DC are 18 and 21. Grin
