Live in a beautiful seaside town in the SW.

Yesterday, in the 5 minutes of getting out of my car I saw the second home owners from Oxford in their holiday home opposite our house had arrived and a whole family get out of their car with their suitcases arrive at their gran's house two doors down.

Just...bloody...WAIT!!!

@Blueeyedgirl21

Off topic but why are aussies so weirdly excited about Uk having bad covid rates? Foaming at the mouth at our rubbish leadership and lockdowns etc. Our vaccination progress is amazing now and our population density is so much higher than Aus, and the climate means hardly any outdoor living, kids packed in classrooms etc, is it any wonder the rates were so much worse here, no, it’s mostly situational not because Australians are some sort of magically covid resistant Nation.
This thread is a pretty good example of it.

No matter what the UK Government tries (albeit often ineptly) to do to quash the spread of the virus, actual people are absolutely determined to interpret the rules to suit them, which means the virus never quite gets under control, and lockdown goes on and on and on.

Yes, of course, the UK is a different kettle of fish compared with other nations that have eradicated the virus, and are living normal lives.

But it’s incredible watching UK citizenry be their own worst enemy - complaining about what must be a soul-destroying, utterly interminable lockdown...

...while doing everything they can to ensure the end is nowhere in sight.

23PissOffAvenueWF - great post.

In November we had all the "the risks are tiny" posts with posters visiting family/friends not in their bubbles, and going out to shops for a wander, coffee etc. That all went a bit quiet when we had horrendous covid and death rates in December and January. Here we are again, people claiming that the risks are low, and they apparently know better than epidemiologists who have years of training and knowledge 🤦‍♀️

Yumskiyorks · 27/03/2021 20:02

Op you said tou hope that it is not happening in every resort village? Ours was so busy today it felt as if we were in a major city. I could not stay out long as ee have narrow streets amd there was no space between people. I know that people are desperate . Am going to start litter picking daily as last year the amount of rubbish was terrible .. am.not saying its all visitiors but the sheer numbers meant over flowing bins and the council could not keep up . I have bought a litter pick up kit . Hope tou summer goes well . The way we managed last year was to get up really really early and be home by 8 am and stay in all day .
I know some people will not realise that we have to do that sort of thing amd that rural life does have it s own issues just as cities do .

You don’t know circumstances... MYOB

Glitteryone · 27/03/2021 20:37

They’ve as much right to be there as you

FourWordsImMuNiTy · 27/03/2021 21:28

The second home owners are probably literally breaking the law by being there, glitteryone, whilst the OP isn’t.

malaboi · 27/03/2021 21:34

Why don't people just own their selfish decisions as opposed to tying themselves into knots to justify it?!

mummylovesthesunshine · 27/03/2021 22:58

I hope the family in question enjoys their holidays away from home.

Butteredtoast55 · 28/03/2021 00:05

YANBU at all. Why is it so hard for people to understand that we are not out of the woods yet?
We have been warned that we are likely to have a third wave and people still think it's OK to travel out of their area and visit people. I completely understand why you think they should wait.

23PissOffAvenueWF · 28/03/2021 00:15

It’s incredible how difficult it seemingly is for people to join the dots, as demonstrated by this ^^ sort of comment.

The rule-breakers are doing to because they hate lockdown and want to move on with life. And I’m doing so, prolong lockdown indefinitely.

The rule-obeyers are doing so, because they hate lockdown and want to move on with life, and understand that the only way lockdown will end, is if the virus stops spreading.

JudgeRindersMinder · 28/03/2021 02:22

@Emilyontmoor

I’m genuinely past caring, and I’m totally sick to the back teeth of all the tale telling

Oh right, Judge Rinder is fed up, I am sure now the Covid virus will stop mutating and infecting people and crawl back into the bat it came from....

Yeah thanks for that. I lost my dad to covid last year and the constant restrictions on life don’t make it easy to move on from losing him, so yeah, I’m over it

My DH lost a parent too, it made it more important for us to follow rules as we have vulnerable family members who either can't have the jab or are still waiting for 2nd one.

Exactly this. Vaccination is a huge advance and protection but it's not 100% and only 6% of us are fully vaccinated. And the vast majority of people are mostly following the rules, it's actually only a few people who aren't, but they're the ones you see outside and who like to be noisy about it.

I’ve been really saddened to see so much lifter everywhere and want to do the same. Where did you get the litter picking kit please? I wish more people would do this. Masks, empty coffee cups, take away containers, absolutely everywhere. I often walk by the sea and the sheer amount of detritus lying there is shocking. Including sanitary towels .
Emilyontmoor · 28/03/2021 09:49

The anti social behaviour is certainly not restricted to beautiful seaside towns. Last summer our Council had to employ poo Marshall’s to stop people pissing and pooing on our open spaces. Of course I think of the people who have had to endure lockdown in tiny flats and need to get out into open spaces but not when they treat those spaces as a toilet. One neighbour was in her garden with her children when piss started flowing under her side gate, she opened it to find 4 large men pissing against it, when she challenged them they said “just hose it down” and they were so intimidating that is what she did.

Emilyontmoor · 28/03/2021 09:51

Judge Rinder I am sorry for your loss but it doesn’t negate the fact the the virus is not going to go away because people are fed up of it, and the rules we have to follow to keep it away

RavingAnnie · 28/03/2021 14:33

If gran lives alone as a PP has said they are allowed to form a support bubble (all the way through lockdown) and so no rules will have been broken.

The virus isn't going away, ever. The sooner people accept that we have to learn to live with it the better.
TurquoiseDress · 28/03/2021 14:57

Good for them, it's their house that they presumably own

Things are opening up now so I don't see any harm in people travelling to stay in other parts of the UK esp to see family

the80sweregreat · 28/03/2021 15:04

I have says this before on mumsnet and been ' flamed' but someone who possibly is a local person , sold them that property. Maybe not in this case, but in other cases with second homes this must happen. Someone has made a few bob out of selling it to people who don't live in the area. If they really don't like it , then try to sell it to the ones that have lived there all their lives? I know the economy doesn't always work this way, but if places are sold it's a done deal and they have to pay their way to keep it going.
The hostility towards these people would put me off buying one ( if I could ever afford one, which I can't!)
I bet they are not having a go at the ones selling them on.

the80sweregreat · 28/03/2021 15:04

Said not says! Auto correct on phone ..

Emilyontmoor · 28/03/2021 15:25

waxon The virus isn't going away, ever. More anti science eh? We don't know what will become of this virus, it's novel, it isn't flu. It may mutate into something else worse or it may lose its virulance as SARs (after effective suppression) and Spanish Flu did. At the moment aided and abetted by countries that have failed to suppress it, it is doing the former but the latter is a possibility too.

Countries that are following a strategy of just living with the virus like Brazil are doing so well aren't they? And countries that acted quickly and effectively to suppress it actually are doing well, low death rates and people getting on with their lives and with healthy economies.

The only thing that is certain is that there will be more pandemics, perhaps more infectious and deadly. They might be a flu, another coronavirus or something entirely different and new like Ebola. Perhaps rather than pretending we can live with deadly diseases we should learn from this experience as most of Asia did from SARS and be ready to act quickly to save lives instead of drawing out the pain by acting too little and too late as the UK did.

RootyT00t · 28/03/2021 15:27

Why are you all talking about two days? This isn't allowed!

Brazil haven't vaccinated enough people. When everyone has been offered the vaccine, then yes, we will learn to live alongside it.

The virus may mutate, sure. That doesn't mean it will vanish. Some people seem to think if we follow all the rules then Covid will go away. That's not how it works.
