I'm 29 so in no means "old" but I don't know what's happened the past couple of years.

I was bought up to respect police, not break the law. Obviously I have, underage drinking etc yet I've never been in trouble with police. Twitter is full of 17-20 year olds slagging off the police for breaking up protests etc hello we are in a pandemic and I'd really like to be out of lockdown soon?

Was also bought up to not judge anyone by their skin colour, religion, sexual orientation etc I have friends who are gay, black, white, Muslim, Jewish yet none of them understand this whole she/her announce your pronouns stuff, we all just respect each others preferences/views/religions/self identification.

Is anyone else feeling sick of this or am I alone???

I don’t believe that the people starting violence at these protests, are even there because they care about the cause. They are there to start violence. I absolutely support protests and always will, we need to have a voice and yes sometimes it makes people with opposing views uncomfortable. I will not respect the law because I’m told to, I will respect it if I agree with it. That is not to say I will break it, but I will protest against it. But now they want to bring in a law that will effectively take away our right to protest. And so protesting would also be against the law. How are we then supposed to hold our politicians accountable?

EsmaCannonball · 28/03/2021 12:44

That's the entire point. The police don't bother to prevent or investigate everyday crime anymore. They just issue people with crime numbers. If crimes like burglary are effectively legalised then what is the point of the police? I know people who have been burgled and the criminals have left evidence (in one case the victim actually recognised the man who climbing through her living room window) and the police didn't even turn up, let alone investigate. They are useless, unless you want to hold a vigil or misgender someone on Twitter.

Absolutely. Nothing to do with age except perhaps the young are more able to withstand kettling, without access to a lavatory or sitting on the ground than slightly people. Its not necessarily a lack of support that sees protests and vigils supported by the young - it's often practicalities.

All women need to remember those who gave their lives and suffered in the fight for universal suffrage. These brave women took part in illegal protests to gain a foot hold on the path to equality.

The likes of Emily Wilding Davison, Constance Lytton, Leonora Cohen, the Pankhursts, Annie Kenney and Dora Thewlis. They suffered police brutality after Asquith refused to meet with them on Black Friday. There efforts at peaceful protest were met with violent aggression by the police, who beat and hit Suffragettes, and threw them into the hostile crowds for further ill-treatment.

One report says, "One of the most shocking elements of Black Friday was the repeated sexual assaults of female protesters. One Suffragette noted: "Several times constables and plain-clothes men who were in the crowds passed their arms round me from the back and clutched hold of my breasts in as public a manner as possible, and men in the crowd followed their example... My skirt was lifted up as high as possible, and the constable attempted to lift me off the ground by raising his knee. This he could not do, so he threw me into the crowd and incited the men to treat me as they wished".

Sort of sounds familiar, but that was 1910.

Chanjer · 28/03/2021 14:13

I'm not sure how you would catch them.

So just best not to even bother?

nokidshere · 28/03/2021 18:01

I'm over 50 & bloody glad young people are angry, about the police, & about the abuse of state power - they should be!

So am I. But there is never justification for violence to people or property to make your case.

How do you suggest @Chanjer

Foolingaround · 28/03/2021 21:51

I have been horrified at what some of the police accounts are posting on Twitter, it’s shown many to be racist, misogynistic bullies. An example of a senior officer-instead of addressing the violence, the new BTP chief is complaining about the hashtag #killthebill.

Read the room Lucy. They can’t seem to accept that some things could have been handled better and work with the public in a conciliatory manner. It’s constant moaning, awful hero worship of each other and #bluelivesmatter Hmm

Furloughwonder · 28/03/2021 22:11

I’m surprised most front line police officers have not all taken sick leave. Let all those protesters get on with it The stress of dealing with the hate of the general public, no priority vaccines, no public support.

You don’t need to worry about the future of our Police forces - there will be no one left doing the job pretty soon.

Smurfsarethefuture · 28/03/2021 22:24

@Furloughwonder

That would be my thought, too.

I think most of them are fine, I have seen one calling protestors ‘unwashed benefit claiming wankers’ and on the timeline linked above, someone was laughing about the journalists getting injured. It looks like it was deleted but it said ‘it’s low down on the list of things I give a shit about’.

twitter.com/cynicalbobby/status/1375758816638332928?s=21

The hero status and blind support for the police has been embarrassing, they say the silent majority supports them. I support the decent ones, not the ones laughing about punching a women in the face on the ground or calling ALL protestors woke tree huggers.

After all, apparently not all the police are the same yet all protestors are according to them (most of who weren’t there).

Quite a few decent, intelligent people have had enough of the arrogant thuggery and that includes me.

Ohnomoreno · 28/03/2021 22:28

Priti Patel is just letting the police take the fall for her psychotic control Bill. It's terrifying. A protest can in future be vetoed on the home secretary's say so. Any protest. So it completely politicises the police. People are attacking the police because that's who will attack them at the behest of this Bill. It matters.

Foolingaround · 28/03/2021 22:30

And equally the police are attacking the protestors. I imagine it’s very hard to speak out against that sort of culture- well I know it is.

Smurfsarethefuture · 28/03/2021 22:35

@Foolingaround

I looked at those Twitter accounts - they could be fake, one seems genuine but really we have no idea. I would be really surprised a police officer would have an account talking about police stuff.

LemonRoses · 28/03/2021 22:39

And where do you stand on them taking photographs with the bodies of dead young women?
BadMotherLover · 28/03/2021 22:48

I am well over 20. The police are filthy corrupt scum. The sooner they are defunded the better. Racist, mysogynistic, corrupt. Get rid of them all. They no longer solve crime to protect the public. Defund!

Nicknacky · 28/03/2021 22:56

@BadMotherLover So every single one of us are corrupt scum? Every single police officer?

BadMotherLover · 28/03/2021 22:57

Yes, all of you.

BadMotherLover · 28/03/2021 22:59

Prove me wrong. Hint: you won't be able to.....

BadMotherLover · 28/03/2021 23:01

You can arrest me. You can beat up my partner, you can arrest my kids. You can ignore my crime reports. But all that will reinforce that lack of respect that the public now holds you in....

Nicknacky · 28/03/2021 23:03

How would you like me to prove it?

BadMotherLover · 28/03/2021 23:06

Confess. Tell mumsnet about the mysogengy and rascism in the police. Tell mumsnet about the closed ranks. Tell mumsnet about the Freemasons, tell mumsnet about the bribes and collusion...confess.

stevalnamechanger · 28/03/2021 23:10

Maybe do some research into the institutional issues within the police . Racism , sexism , homophobia .

Plus police brutality . 🤷‍♀️
