AIBU for only wanting a TV in the living room?

My DH has talked about wanting a TV in our bedroom and in the kitchen since we met years ago. In our old house it wasn't possible (kitchen too small) and I said no to having one in our bedroom as I like our bedroom being an intimate space.

DH's beloved TV started to break a few years ago and he began to talk about getting a new 4K one. So as a birthday gift I bought him a new one- incredibly expensive and a model I knew he wanted. As far as I was concerned, we were just replacing our one and only TV with a better one and that was it.

We are 4 months into decorating our new house, about to finish, and tonight he has suddenly produced the old TV and wants it in either the kitchen or our spare bedroom. (He kept it because it is 3D-enabled, so he will use it to watch 3D films, despite the screen being messed up, hence me buying the original replacement!)

I really don't want more than one TV in our small house because I feel it's unnecessary - our kitchen/living room is sort of open plan so feels weird to have two and a 60 inch TV in a small bedroom feels weird. I don't know why it bothers me so much - I guess I feel our intimacy will suffer?

I'm in full agreement with you.

TaraR2020 · 24/03/2021 21:47

Nope id put my foot down, once dated a bloke with a tv in every room bar the bathroom and it drove me nuts

Macncheeseballs · 24/03/2021 21:47

I'm with you, he can used a tablet or computer for other rooms

Vodkabulary · 24/03/2021 21:51

YANBU. We just have a tv in our living room. If we want to watch something in bed we just use tablets or phone.

As a teen I loved having a tv and video combi in my room Grin it different times! It was Tiny

AnneLovesGilbert · 24/03/2021 21:51

I’m with you too.

Cautionsharpblade · 24/03/2021 21:52

I’d been telly free for years then moved into a house that had ten of the fuckers. One in the kitchen, one that popped out the end of the bed and yes, one above the bath. Drove me nuts. Now happily telly free again.

Cottagepieandpeas · 24/03/2021 21:52

Yes hate TVs in the bedroom. We have one but DP hasn’t watched it since I moved in. 😮

weltenbummler · 24/03/2021 21:54

YANBU at all!!

ChrissyPlummer · 24/03/2021 21:55

I’m with DH. We have TVs in the living room, our bedroom and the spare bedroom. The spare bedroom one is just one I use for gaming on though. I really struggle to fall asleep without a TV and watching on a small tablet screen just isn’t the same, though I do use my iPad when I’m on the treadmill in the garage. We don’t have one in the kitchen/dining room as we usually listen to the radio at mealtimes.

23PissOffAvenueWF · 24/03/2021 21:57

YANBU.

We have two living rooms, and so two TVs, but have never, and would never, have one in anyone’s bedroom.

Bedrooms are not for TV.

Lazypuppy · 24/03/2021 21:59

We have always had a tv in our bedroom. We always have at least 2 tvs in the house means i can watch something else when he watches football!

pheasantsinlove · 24/03/2021 22:03

We have one in the spare room which gets watched occasionally when DH wants to watch a sports thing that I don't want to watch.

Stellaris22 · 24/03/2021 22:04

Depends on the use of the TV. DH likes to game but has a high end gaming PC instead of a console. If the second TV was for console gaming then that's fine, as it's a different activity to watching TV. But if it's just to watch TV in a different room I don't see the point when you can just watch on a laptop or iPad. We only have one TV.

TheDogsMother · 24/03/2021 22:04

Definitely no TV in the bedroom and we use a bigger iPad as a kitchen TV when needed.

CounsellorTroi · 24/03/2021 22:05

I'm with you. One TV in the living room is enough. If your DH must watch TV in other rooms what's wrong with using apps on laptops or tablets?

Cornishmumofone · 24/03/2021 22:05

We only have a TV in the lounge... but I often take my laptop into the kitchen when I'm cleaning or cooking.

mars2 · 24/03/2021 22:06

I love having a tv in my bedroom, it's not big but I like watching a film or watching someone when getting ready. Tablet isn't the same for me.

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 24/03/2021 22:07

I 100% agree with you. TVs should be kept to one room, not dotted all over the house.

M0rT · 24/03/2021 22:09

Do you have a spare room he could put the second tv in as a compromise?
I wouldn't have one in the bedroom and it would be hard to have them both on if your kitchen/living is open plan.

MsHardy · 24/03/2021 22:10

@Cornishmumofone yes we both often use our laptops or tablets in the kitchen while cooking or cleaning- we even have wireless noise-cancelling headphones which make it easier to watch TV whilst cooking with noise of extractor fan etc than it would be with an actual TV!! 🤣

If anyone else has that problem btw - wireless noise cancelling headphones are the best! Also good for running round the house listening to podcasts whilst tidying up 👌

We have 4x TVs - all downstairs - in the living room, kitchen, garage/gym and the DC's playroom. None of them are particularly big or smart but all get used at different times.

No televisions upstairs though. I don't like them in the bedrooms, if I want to watch something upstairs I use my iPad.

AgeLikeWine · 24/03/2021 22:13

YANBU.

We only own one TV, in the sitting room. There are radios in every room though, all tuned to R4.

riotlady · 24/03/2021 22:14

I don’t get why a tv in the bedroom would destroy intimacy but tablets/laptops don’t?

RainbowMum11 · 24/03/2021 22:15

I have one in my bedroom - I don't often watch it but I like being able to finish watching something in bed if I want to.

Only other one is in the lounge, listen to the radio in the kitchen.

RedMarauder · 24/03/2021 22:17

60 inch is too big for a bedroom.

However a smaller TV in the spare bedroom is a good idea as it can be used for a number of things e.g. as a monitor. Also good if you have guests as they can choose to watch TV and entertain themselves if you are asleep.

Unless your kitchen is massive there is no need for a TV as if you are cooking or cleaning a radio is much better. (Worth making sure you have one that isn't internet connected in case your connection goes down.)
