AIBU for only wanting a TV in the living room?

My DH has talked about wanting a TV in our bedroom and in the kitchen since we met years ago. In our old house it wasn't possible (kitchen too small) and I said no to having one in our bedroom as I like our bedroom being an intimate space.

DH's beloved TV started to break a few years ago and he began to talk about getting a new 4K one. So as a birthday gift I bought him a new one- incredibly expensive and a model I knew he wanted. As far as I was concerned, we were just replacing our one and only TV with a better one and that was it.

We are 4 months into decorating our new house, about to finish, and tonight he has suddenly produced the old TV and wants it in either the kitchen or our spare bedroom. (He kept it because it is 3D-enabled, so he will use it to watch 3D films, despite the screen being messed up, hence me buying the original replacement!)

I really don't want more than one TV in our small house because I feel it's unnecessary - our kitchen/living room is sort of open plan so feels weird to have two and a 60 inch TV in a small bedroom feels weird. I don't know why it bothers me so much - I guess I feel our intimacy will suffer?

AIBU?

Totally agree. I especially hate TVs in bedrooms. We only have one in the living room.

When the kids are in their teens I might relent for TVs in their rooms. In the meantime they make do with tablets.

GreyhoundG1rl · 25/03/2021 12:52

A 60" is too big for any reasonably sized room, let alone a bedroom.

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 25/03/2021 13:05

100% agree with you OP.

We have 6 TVs In our house and everyone owns a tablet!

I don’t understand this, surely they are still watching tv then?

We have one in our bedroom and one in our lounge. Sometimes DH wants to watch something I dont, and vice versa.

Plus when I'm poorly and in bed I like to have tv on in the background as I find it easier to sleep because my brain listens to that rather than listening to how crap my body feels.

Love51 · 25/03/2021 13:31

I've never been a fan of TVs in bedrooms. Especially for children but that's because part of my job has involved helping families who have children with disordered sleep. However, in the past year we've all watched more telly because we haven't been out. Previously we wouldn't disagree about telly as we were off out doing things. Now we are in, a lot. We have you tube on the big TV, great for yoga, cosmic kids just dance etc.
We acquired a second TV which could either go in the dining room or the adults bedroom. We installed it yesterday in the dining room. The kids didn't even think to ask to have it on over dinner, it is down one end. When restrictions lift I'm planning on getting a small settee or 2 cocktail chairs. I didn't know what a cocktail chair was until I started looking for something to sit on while watching TV. The children will not be drinking cocktails, beer only until they hit double figures Wink

Oh we have tv in living room / kitchen / bedrooms x 3

We watch movies in the evening in bed we still manage to be intimate.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 25/03/2021 13:40

We have three TV's - one in the living room, one in the bedroom, and one in the spare room where DH's indoor bike is set up.

It's great. It means we can go into different rooms and watch TV comfortably - I'd hate having to watch TV on a tiny little tablet screen! Why is that any less antisocial or disruptive than using an actual TV, anyway?

someonelockthefridgealready · 25/03/2021 14:15

We don't have a TV in the bedroom as have trouble getting to sleep and light from screens is a nightmare for me. DH goes to bed before and sometimes watches stuff on his phone and I usually turn the TV off and read for a bit.

Our living space is open plan, but I wouldn't object to a second TV in kitchen/spare room if DH was particularly keen. Unless I thought it would mean I never see him, I guess that would make me feel a bit differently!

Our house is like yours, I even leave the kitchen radio on for the cats when we go out. Radio 4 of course, only the best for our kitties.

I've never had a TV in my bedroom as I like to read in bed. But each time I've stayed in a hotel I've loved watching TV in bed even if there is a couch to sit on. So maybe with the next move I might get one...

Bluntness100 · 25/03/2021 16:34

Yes, I totally don’t get this either. For me it doesn’t matter what you’re watching it on. There’s no difference sitting in bed watching tv on a tablet than watching it on an actual tv, or watching in the kitchen on a tablet v on an actual tv. The device isn’t the issue. It’s the watching of the tv.

We don’t have tv in the bedrooms or the kitchen. We do not still watch it in these rooms on tablets. If we were doing that we may as well put TVs in those rooms.

MaryShelley1818 · 25/03/2021 16:49

If you use laptops/tablets then you basically have a TV in the bedroom, it's no different apart from you don't have to hold the TV yourself.

We have one in the bedroom that is invaluable atm as DD is cluster feeding and I spend a lot of the night watching Greys Anatomy while she feeds.

RingtheBells · 25/03/2021 16:51

We have a TV in the bedroom, where the hell would DH watch his sports shit and old films if we only had one TV, certainly not on the one downstairs.

Stevearnottsbeard · 25/03/2021 19:15

We have 5 tvs in our house, all used for different things at different times by different people, obviously not all at the same time I don't think. Can honestly say it's never effected mine and my husbands intimacy!!! 😂 😂 😜😜😜

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 25/03/2021 20:19

@LoveDrunk

I'd never have a TV in the bedroom - you're just one step away from eating in bed if you do

I do that too sometimes. 🤷🏻‍♀️ What do you think will happen if you eat in bed?

Crumbs, LoveDrunk

Well, it starts with crumbs, chocolate, biscuits, then you get onto the hard stuff - toast in bed, then I'm afraid it's a slippery slope to takeaways in bed and leaving the TV on as you sleep because you CBA to teach for the remote Grin

Duvetdweller · 25/03/2021 20:24

You’d hate our house - there’s one in kitchen, lounge, kids rooms, gym and bathroom! But not in our room, I draw the line there 😀

doubleshotespresso · 25/03/2021 21:09

100% agree with you OP.
I tolerate one tv in the house, anymore I'd lose my mind.

Flowers24 · 25/03/2021 21:11

Tv's all the way here, we have a large one in lounge, another in dining room and recently got in in the bedroom , its lovely snuggling up watching films in bed!

LoveDrunk · 25/03/2021 22:01

That’s where Alexa comes in.....you just ask Alexa to turn the TV off in our house and she does. No need for a remote. Wink

I’m a vegan so I don’t eat chocolate, biscuits or takeaways really. But toast, yes. Nothing terrible has happened yet. 🤷🏻‍♀️

LoveDrunk · 25/03/2021 22:03

And as for crumbs, well you use a plate....and change your sheets and clean often.

BadLad · 25/03/2021 22:33

Such ridiculous pearl clutching.

Ontheboardwalk · 25/03/2021 22:48

Spare bedroom fine especially after being in lockdown for a year. Space to watch some telly on your own is a good thing surely? Unless as other posters have said he moves into the spare room

I’m more interested in the 3D movies he’s watching on a messed up screen, how does that work? Surely you can’t with a messed up screen.

After wasting thousands many many years ago on a 3D tv I know there' were only a handful of 3D films that were worth watching at the time. 4K much better to watch

Holothane · 26/03/2021 11:34

I have bad eyes and love my 65 inch tv I saved up for it for years for my 50th the picture is incredible as for blu rays fantastic,
