AIBU for only wanting a TV in the living room?

My DH has talked about wanting a TV in our bedroom and in the kitchen since we met years ago. In our old house it wasn't possible (kitchen too small) and I said no to having one in our bedroom as I like our bedroom being an intimate space.

DH's beloved TV started to break a few years ago and he began to talk about getting a new 4K one. So as a birthday gift I bought him a new one- incredibly expensive and a model I knew he wanted. As far as I was concerned, we were just replacing our one and only TV with a better one and that was it.

We are 4 months into decorating our new house, about to finish, and tonight he has suddenly produced the old TV and wants it in either the kitchen or our spare bedroom. (He kept it because it is 3D-enabled, so he will use it to watch 3D films, despite the screen being messed up, hence me buying the original replacement!)

I really don't want more than one TV in our small house because I feel it's unnecessary - our kitchen/living room is sort of open plan so feels weird to have two and a 60 inch TV in a small bedroom feels weird. I don't know why it bothers me so much - I guess I feel our intimacy will suffer?

Why does anyone want a tv in kitchen?

AuditAngel · 24/03/2021 22:19

We only had a tv in the living room until about 8 years ago when we put a second one in the playroom as I was fed up with kids tv. No TV’s upstairs, but we all have iPads, older 2 have laptops and youngest monopolises my old laptop.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 24/03/2021 22:25

We have a small TV on a bracket in the bedroom, used mainly to entertain me while ironing. We never watch it in bed.

We also have a small TV in the kitchen, because we don't all want to watch the same things.

Robin233 · 24/03/2021 22:25

After a 12 hour day dh has been a sleep since 8.30
But with a tv in the bedroom we are together
Both relaxed
I'm enjoying watching what ever I like - bliss
But it's not for everyone :)

Tv, computer screen, laptop screen, phone

They are really all the same thing. We have a larger screen well one each in the study, and a smaller screen in bedrooms

Only in living room - no screens.

wheresmycrown · 24/03/2021 22:27

Hate TVs in the bedroom. They're dust collectors and who wants to sleep in a dust room?! We only have one in our lounge too.

Robin233 · 24/03/2021 22:29

I dust my tv every week
Flat screen so easily ti keep clean

Cavagirl · 24/03/2021 22:32

Ugh no

Wouldn't you need extra wiring? Can you use that to put him off??

Honeyroar · 24/03/2021 22:34

I’m with him. We only have one in the living room and I’d love one elsewhere.

RosieGuacamosie · 24/03/2021 22:35

Maybe I’m in the minority but I wouldn’t be without my bedroom tv! I love cuddling up in bed with my boyfriend and watching a film - we’re often naked so increases our intimacy rather than decreases it.

Cavagirl · 24/03/2021 22:35

What sort of film is that @RosieGuacamosie ?
Wink

I agree with you, though we have become a 3 TV household by stealth. Ds2 has a TV that he uses mostly for I player and our old living room TV has ended up in The Other Front Room (official title) where it gets used with a fire stick to watch stuff that Ds1 disapproves, of.

OwlinaTree · 24/03/2021 22:40

We don't have a TV in the bedroom, but I love the idea of the bed frame where you push a button and the TV comes out of the end of the bed! Always looks amazing!!

PickAChew · 24/03/2021 22:41

All our radios are tuned to 6 music apart from ds1's which is permanently on and tuned to absolute 80s!

ThrowingAShellstrop · 24/03/2021 22:46

If I had a TV in my bedroom, I’d likely never leave my bed. A radio is a must however...

LadyFidgetAndHerHandbag · 24/03/2021 22:53

I'm with you OP. Numerous studies have shown that sleeping (or trying to sleep) with screens on is bad for you. We have 1 TV and that is in the sitting room. We splashed out on a Lumie alarm clock last year so now we operate a no screen bedroom.

Why does anyone want a tv in kitchen?

I make and decorate cakes as a hobby, could be in there all day so a TV thats why I want one!

KingdomScrolls · 24/03/2021 22:57

We are a one TV household, our old TV (27 inch) gave up the ghost so we replaced it with a 32 inch upgrade! Someone did give us a little one DH put in the kitchen for my benefit as I was going through a phase of extremely complicated and time consuming cooking (pre DS I liked to spend time experimenting in the kitchen), but I never used it and it got really dusty so we gave it to someone else. We do have several Google home hubs/speakers and have radio 4 on quite a lot, or audiobooks or music and I have a portable DAB radio for the garden.
60 inch TVs are too big unless you live in a mansion/stately home/cinema let alone two of them.

AlwaysLatte · 24/03/2021 22:58

We've got quite a few TVs but never in our bedroom, it's meant to be a place for relaxation. The small kitchen TV is used the most of all of them, I think.

KingdomScrolls · 24/03/2021 22:58

@Robin233 how is he asleep with the TV and the big light on! I envy his sleep skills

Why does anyone want a tv in kitchen?
I love catching up on BBC news when I'm preparing meals.

2021youpromisedyoudbebetter · 24/03/2021 23:03

We have two TVs, one in the open plan living area of our kitchen diner which is our day to day family area and one in our proper living room which is a bit more of a grown up chill out zone. No TVs upstairs. Our TVs are never on at the same time and it doesn't bother me but I really would hate a tv in the bedroom but then I am trying to ban phones in there to make it completely tech free

BornOnTwelthNight · 24/03/2021 23:05

If Dh had his way we’d have a tv in every room but as it stands we have two downstairs one in living room (mine!) and one in study (doesn’t really get used) and two upstairs (his and Dds ) we used to have a small one in the kitchen but I hated it so got rid
I personally don’t like a tv in the bedroom as I only really watch tv downstairs but Dh has ‘His’ tv in the bedroom and tbh it’s saved my sanity.

He likes to chill in bed whilst watching tv in the evening as he goes to sleep much earlier than me, whereas I can’t relax properly and start getting fidgety. We like to watch different programmes and he says it’s not fair of him to take over ‘my’ tv.
If we do want to watch something together we’ll take it in turns whether to watch up or downstairs. So suits us both.

PurpleFlower1983 · 24/03/2021 23:10

I resisted having a TV in the bedroom for ages but we got one given with a new Sky Package and I conceded. It was great doing those long night feeds when DD was born and I sent OH to the spare room, watched all sorts! Grin

HomeEdRocks18 · 24/03/2021 23:14

I agree with you. We have a TV in the front room. My teen boys have a TV each for gaming, and my daughter has one for DVDs only at weekends in their bedrooms.
I don't want one in my room
