To ask whether you have a dryer and/ or dishwasher?

We have never had the money or room for either but I need a new washer anyway.

I don't think I'd use the dishwasher however if I got the drier I wouldn't need to have the airer in the kitchen. Obviously most washer / driers are double the cost of a washer on its own.

My parents had a dryer over 20 years ago and I remember my dad saying they cost a lot to run.

Are either worth it?

Dishwasher used daily, dryer in winter for sheets/towels but do have a ceiling airer.

HilaryBriss · 11/03/2021 19:33

I haven't got (and never have had) either. I am currently considering a dishwasher but have nowhere to put a dryer and I have heard that combined washer dryers are not so good.

TeddyBeans · 11/03/2021 19:33

I've got a washer dryer because the majority of my stuff isn't tumble dry-able but the stuff that is (bedding and towels mostly) isn't worth its own machine.

I wouldn't hesitate to get a dishwasher if I had space in my pokey little kitchen for one though

Marmite27 · 11/03/2021 19:34

We have both. Wouldn’t be without either. We have a super efficient heat pump condenser dryer. Takes longer than the old one did though.

Laila747 · 11/03/2021 19:35

I have both and wouldn’t want to be without either of them....
But at a push, I’d sacrifice the dishwasher to keep the dryer. I can cope with washing up...I can’t cope with 6 peoples wet washing hanging all over the house if the weathers too crap to hang it out!

Floralnomad · 11/03/2021 19:36

I use my tumble dryer all year round and it doesn’t cost much to run IMO . Personally I wouldn’t have a washer / dryer as I’ve always been told they are inefficient and I generally want to have the dryer getting on with the first wash load whilst I do another . With a washer / dryer I would end up doing laundry every day . I was recently without a dishwasher for a couple of weeks and I did miss it although if it came to a choice of dryer or dishwasher I would pick the dryer .

EuroTrashed · 11/03/2021 19:36

I’d keep the dishwasher and lose the dryer. It’s out in the garage so a hassle to use and that is primarily what keeps bills down - sheer laziness

Agree. I have so much washing, the washing machine on daily. Considering the very short period where I can put it outside to dry, I think I'd be more stressed having wet washing everywhere than have to do the washing up
WeWentToTheAnimalFair · 11/03/2021 19:37

Have both and couldn't been without them.

AlCalavicci · 11/03/2021 19:37

I have never had either , lots of people tell me I am missing out by not having them but I dont feel I need them .
I have not got the space for them but wouldn't buy them even if I did have , my pots tend to sit on the draining board until I need them again or I have more pots to wash and need the space and I am foutnuat enough to have a very small back yard where I can dry clothes or put them on a airier in my bedroom

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 11/03/2021 19:38

I wouldn’t get a washer/dryer in one tbh. They don’t do an amazing job as a dryer. If you can get a vented one and maybe put it in the garage if there isn’t room inside, or stack it on top of the washer if there’s room, that would change your life!!

I bought one for £50 from Facebook and it’s brilliant. Yes, it probably costs a bit in electricity but then having damp washing around your house is going to cause other issues so for the sake of a few pence a day it’s well worth it. The only thing is, there are certain things you won’t tumble - t shirts mainly, as they shrink, so would still need to air a few bits (or put them outside in summer). I recently swapped my old cheap tumble for an expensive heat pump one which is supposed to be better for not shrinking stuff, but shirts and 100% cotton bedding comes out all screwed up, so I joe hang them up instead of t shirts - I kind of wish I still had my old one back!

luxxlisbon · 11/03/2021 19:39

I have both and wouldn’t be without either. We have a pretty small kitchen and made sure we fit both in.

piglet81 · 11/03/2021 19:39

I’ve only had one washer-dryer in my life and it was useless, so I’m prejudiced against them! We have a broken dishwasher that we’ve not got round to sorting in over a year Blush, and no tumble dryer. There are only 3 of us though, so not massive amounts of laundry to deal with, and we have room for a Lakeland heated airer.

crumpet · 11/03/2021 19:41

Couldnt live without my dishwasher. Got rid of the tumble dryer which came with the house, when we renovated as it wasn’t being used enough. Also it is a nod to environmentalism I suppose.

happytoday73 · 11/03/2021 19:41

I have both. With a family I'd definitely go for the dryer over the dishwasher.... Used far more, much better than things drying around house

waitingpatientlyforspring · 11/03/2021 19:41

We got rid of our drier well over a year ago when it broke. We gave it away (apparently easy fix) and not really missed it.

We do have a dishwasher and I love it. I will never be without one. I wasn't brought up with one (DH was) and we managed 15 year's without but had one four years now and it would be replaced within 24 hours if it broke 😂

IHaveBrilloHair · 11/03/2021 19:41

I don't have either.
I don't want them particularly, but if I had to choose I'd go for the dryer.

BeatricePrior · 11/03/2021 19:42

My drier I love. But I shrink my husband's t shirts regularly or he may be getting fatter. Not sure.

My dishewasher. Got one in November. It's changed my fucking life. I love it. Best Buy ever.

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 11/03/2021 19:43

The main disadvantage of a combi washer/dryer is that the dryer can only take about half a normal wash-load. The temptation is often not to remove half a load to dry the other half. What you’ll be left with is some items dried to a crisp and some still damp. That was my sister’s experience. But you might not be the same calibre of lazy-arse

I don’t have either a tumble dryer or a dishwasher. There’s no room in my kitchen plus I live alone so don’t need them

RevolvingPivot · 11/03/2021 19:43

We don't have a garage unfortunately. It's a new build (well been here 10 years) and we have houses either side of us. I'd love to move though.

With young children and tons of tiny clothes, a dryer is great.

When ours were out of that stage we got rid of it.

Would not be without a dishwasher though!

Chicchicchicchiclana · 11/03/2021 19:45

We have both, luckily a big kitchen. But we hardly use the drier as we don't mind washing drying inside on an airer. If it was an either/or scenario I'd choose dishwasher but we also have a garden for drying in the warmer months.

Babdoc · 11/03/2021 19:45

I have had a dishwasher for 36 years. Wouldn’t be without it. But I have never needed or wanted a tumble dryer. I dry clothes, towels and bedding on my radiators, which helps to humidify the house.

EstellaHanclay · 11/03/2021 19:46

Oh my god honestly get both. I never realised how much easier they made life until i got one. I have a tiny kitchen, I can touch all sides from the middle and no room for a table but I've made it work. Knock out a cupboard if you have to! You can find ones on a budget for £200-£250 each.

Dryer - Chuck dirty clothes in washer, then chuck in dryer, then another load in washer, fold straight out of the dryer into a basket. You can have all your washing done so quickly.

Dishwasher - the kitchen looks so much cleaner all the time! There's never any dirty dishes piled up because we put them straight into the dishwasher as used and whack it on before bed.

flappityflippers1 · 11/03/2021 19:46

Used to have a dryer, and got rid when the conservatory got done properly (it used to be part lean to/part old outhouse thing, and housed the dryer and freezer). I miss it for the stuff I could put in it (towels, bedding especially) but can live without it.

Never had a dishwasher and never wanted one. I've recently been offered a 'table top' dishwasher, but for the hassle of installing it and loosing the worktop space, for the sake of fitting about 6 dishes in, I can live without! (OK, it does fit more than that, but not enough to make me want it!)
