To ask whether you have a dryer and/ or dishwasher?

We have never had the money or room for either but I need a new washer anyway.

I don't think I'd use the dishwasher however if I got the drier I wouldn't need to have the airer in the kitchen. Obviously most washer / driers are double the cost of a washer on its own.

My parents had a dryer over 20 years ago and I remember my dad saying they cost a lot to run.

Are either worth it?

@luxxlisbon

I have both and wouldn’t be without either. We have a pretty small kitchen and made sure we fit both in.
How?! My washing machine is out on the landing, not through choice but where it was when I moved in, it is plumbed in there/waste pipe etc, very strange set up, never seen before, but I have seen machines in other places other than the kitchen, at the same time. But I have a combined kitchen/living area, neither part leaving a lot of space for either parts of living. There is a breast which if it wasn't there, it would of given space to put a dryer that wouldn't of stuck out much at all, then I would of definitely had one. As no garden, not prepared to put wet washing in the bedroom's mine especially as it is small, I have one large airer in the kitchen/living area and use the railing area over stairs, not ideal, and thinking about what will happen once DC is in day care and extra washing/less time to do it, and to top it off the silly agent who replaced the rotten machine left here, when I moved in, which was a 9kg and lovely/good settings on it etc, to a stupid 6kg one! Okay they are supposed to be for small families, but that's irrelevant if you have a double bed! And bath towels to wash, you can't put very much in, never had less than a 7kg which is standard, in last rented place. Agent won't change it so I am lumbered now, or of course can buy my own but don't have the funds.

@Babdoc

I have had a dishwasher for 36 years. Wouldn’t be without it. But I have never needed or wanted a tumble dryer. I dry clothes, towels and bedding on my radiators, which helps to humidify the house.
Yes and add a lot of moisture back in to the air!

@EstellaHanclay

Oh my god honestly get both. I never realised how much easier they made life until i got one. I have a tiny kitchen, I can touch all sides from the middle and no room for a table but I've made it work. Knock out a cupboard if you have to! You can find ones on a budget for £200-£250 each.

Dryer - Chuck dirty clothes in washer, then chuck in dryer, then another load in washer, fold straight out of the dryer into a basket. You can have all your washing done so quickly.

Dishwasher - the kitchen looks so much cleaner all the time! There's never any dirty dishes piled up because we put them straight into the dishwasher as used and whack it on before bed.

He he you've got me planning all sorts of things in my kitchen/living area now 😁 do you think a chimney breast would be strong enough to put a cupboard on?! Might have to ask on my neighbour forum to see if any builders can assist 🤔 Because I am thinking that then the cupboard I have under the work top, could be removed leaving plenty of space for a dryer!

We have both and a small kitchen. Sacrificed downstairs w/c and made it into a utility room with washer, dryer, ironing board, vacuum etc in. Dishwasher went into the space where the washing machine was. We did have a dryer in the 4th bedroom (box room) but turned it into a small home office for wfh. We have 2 bathrooms upstairs so don't really miss the downstairs one except for when we have guests which isn't often. I couldn't be without the dishwasher and dryer now.

iluvpickles · 12/03/2021 10:55

Got both and wouldn't be without either. I don't notice they are expensive to run. My gas/electric bill is certainly not huge. Pay about £95 a month for both usually end up with a credit at end of the year. That's for a 4 bed house with 2 adults and 2 kids. The heating is on from 6am-10pm set at 20 degrees and comes on overnight too if it dips below 17 degrees in the house.

Washimal · 12/03/2021 11:05

We have both and I would hate to be without either to be honest. I really dislike loads of wet washing hanging around the house and the last thing I want to do once I've finally finished work, cooked tea and got the kids to bed is stand at the sink washing pots.
I wouldn't have a combined washer/dryer though as we had one in our first house and it was useless.

Confusedandshaken · 12/03/2021 11:07

Washer dryers are awful. Don't even consider it.

If I had to choose between a dishwasher and a tumble dryer I'd go for the dishwasher because they keep the kitchen tidy looking and I hate washing up. Even in our tiny holiday flat we have a small dishwasher. We also got rid of the horrible washer dryer and put in a proper washing machine. There was no room for a tumble dryer in the kitchen so we put one in the bedroom instead. If we hadn't had room for that I would have bought a heated airer. (It's a 5th floor flat with no outside space before anyone suggests drying it outside. It's also in a very touristy seaside town so any washing left outside would be covered in seagull shit very quickly)

🤣 at the Seagull bit, very true. I came back for more answers as it's a subject I have been going over as to what to do, for the last few months! I can certainly see the benefit of a dish washer, I use quite a few oven trays for various things, and get fed up with them sitting on the side waiting to be done, amongst all the other bits and bobs. But am I right in thinking that you have to clean really heavily soiled items first?
Whatisthisfuckery · 12/03/2021 15:31

I used to have a stand alone drier and now I have a washer drier. I used to live in a flat that didn’t have proper heating and no garden so it was essential. Now I live in a house with a garden so I can dry outside when it’s decent, but I still love the ease of just bunging my towels on an eco wash dry over night when the weather is shite.

I also have a dishwasher which I got when I moved into this house. It’s not essential but I do love the luxury of it. For years I had to boil the kettle to wash up, so being able to bung everything in the dishwasher is amazing.

HeronLanyon · 12/03/2021 15:37

I used to have a large top loader washer and separate large top loader dryer. They lived in a basement. That dryer I did use for curtains and rugs etc. Also normal loads sometimes it was so big things dried really quickly and not crumpled. would have that dryer back in a heart beat if I could have the basement back too.

Nameisjustaname · 12/03/2021 15:43

Always had a dryer growing up but my most recent is great as it's a condenser so don't need the vent.
Dishwasher only had for 4 years but got rid of a cupboard to have it. Would not be without either to be honest.

TheAirbender · 12/03/2021 15:44

I really find it baffling when people say they wouldn’t use a dishwasher. Mine goes on 3/4 times a day and I don’t wash anything up. That’s what it’s for. I don’t handwash laundry as I have a machine to do it for me.

trevthecat · 12/03/2021 15:56

We have both. Couldn't do without either. We have a Samsung drier so not expensive to run (expensive to buy though) the dishwasher is from Howdens.

monkeysox · 12/03/2021 16:03

I have both. If I had to choose due to lack of space I'd get dishwasher and a washer dryer.

Dishwasher on at least once a day.

Dryer only used for towels and bedding in poor weather.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 12/03/2021 16:05

For the cost/footprint of a quality clothes dryer, does anybody find it's more convenient and cost-effective to outsource most of the laundry?

Bourbonbiccy · 12/03/2021 16:23

We have both and the dryer is definitely the one I would hate to loose.
You can always wash your dishes (as we tend to and the dishwasher just sits there) but if the weather is bad or you just need a quick turn around on something, a dryer IMO is needed.

I tend to hand wash and use the spin cycle for mine and most of my sons bits, then air dry them, but I would always choose a dryer for the bigger items.

willstarttomorrow · 12/03/2021 16:31

So my dryer stopped working and I just drop a few loads of washed clothes off a my friendly laundretteand get them all back in a few hours folded so nicely no ironing needed. Now drop the whole lot down for wash and dry- £16 max on a week when all towels, bedding and mucking out DD room and finding a basket of clothes.

minipie · 12/03/2021 16:41

I have both but if I had to choose one I’d keep the dishwasher. I didn’t use a dryer for years.

Newkitchen123 · 12/03/2021 17:15

I have neither. I am self employed and wfh all the time so I don't have work clothes etc. Husband does manual job and wears hard-wearing work gear that dries quite easily. We have space to dry without it being all over the house.
No need for dishwasher for 2 adults it wouldn't be on everyday so I would rather wash up
