To ask whether you have a dryer and/ or dishwasher?

We have never had the money or room for either but I need a new washer anyway.

I don't think I'd use the dishwasher however if I got the drier I wouldn't need to have the airer in the kitchen. Obviously most washer / driers are double the cost of a washer on its own.

My parents had a dryer over 20 years ago and I remember my dad saying they cost a lot to run.

Are either worth it?

To me a dryer is an absolute basic. I've never not had one. Even when we were brought up with no money in a rough council estate we still had a dryer so I'm always amazed anyone considers them a "luxury". I literally use it for all our clothes, towels, bedding. Everything except delicate/expensive clothes. I'd be drowning under laundry without it and couldn't be bothered hanging every single sock up.

I would hate to be without dishwasher too. If I didn't have DC I'd survive but since they came along and we spend most of our time at home there's a constant stream of dishes and it just makes life easier. I'm all for an easy life!

Twobrews · 12/03/2021 08:17

We had both and they both packed up in the same week.
Within days I'd got a new dishwasher delivered, six years on I still haven't got round to replacing the dryer.

RaininSummer · 12/03/2021 08:18

I have never had or even used either machine. Seem to cope just fine.

Whatapalavaa · 12/03/2021 08:19

Condenser dryer. Game changer whilst it's too wet to hang washing out. Mine is in my spare bedroom as no room downstairs. No dishwasher as single adult and don't mind washing up.

Whatapalavaa · 12/03/2021 08:20

For info, my dryer is a basic Beko from AO.com. Love it. Dries quickly.

Member984815 · 12/03/2021 08:21

I have both but , the dishwasher is used daily the dryer only when I need to but I have a large clothesline if I didn't have outside space I would use the dryer much more

Runmybathforme · 12/03/2021 08:26

I never wanted a dishwasher until I got one, wouldn’t be without it now, kitchen is always tidy , life is just so much easier. Don’t think modern dryers cost so much to run, can’t stand rough towels, and saves on the ironing. Washer/dryers are useless, they simply don’t work.

userxx · 12/03/2021 08:27

Dishwasher but no dryer, I wouldn't use one anyway, prefer line dried clothes. This time of year is a pain in the arse but washing dries quickly on the airier. It might be a different story if it wasn't just me and the boyfriend.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/03/2021 08:33

Dishwasher used daily.,
Dryer - used it a lot years ago but much less often now, largely for things that have to be T dried (pillows, padded gilets) etc.

Porcupineintherough · 12/03/2021 08:33

Have and use both. Dishwasher was a present from my MiL when I went back to work after being a SAHM. I was a bit Confused and thought it wasnt worth having - I was so, so wrong. Grin

Dryer I wanted. Our garden is in the lea of a hill so you can only dry clothes out there April- October. I was sick of moving things from clothes rack to radiator and back again. We also had a mold problem in the house and now when I empty the condensing drawer of the drier I know why! It costs about 24p a load to run, which is a bargain.

Strugglingtodomybest · 12/03/2021 08:39

I have a dishwasher, after years of saying that I didn't need one I now couldn't live without it Grin

I've never had a drier, primarily for eco reasons. They might be better these days but I get along fine with my heated airer which takes up the same amount of space.

windisblowing · 12/03/2021 08:45

Have both. Couldn't be without either. Dryer costs about 30p a load, well worth it. No idea what dishwasher costs to run. Worth it for hygiene as I know all dishes are 60 degree sterilised.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 12/03/2021 08:49

I have both , dishwasher use daily and helps keep kitchen tidy
Dryer I use a lot in winter as well and not sure how I would cope just usng airer
I still use an airer sometimes as some clothes can't be tumbled dry
But tumble dryer for sheets and towels etc helps
Luckily i have room for both kind of, the tumble dryer is just in corner of kitchen so not ideal but no where else for it

Avaganda · 12/03/2021 08:54

I have both and I'm a lazy cow so I'd struggle without either of them Blush

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 12/03/2021 08:56

Washer driers are rubbish definitely avoid. I couldn’t manage without a drier but could wash by hand.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 12/03/2021 08:56

Wash pots that should be.

Norwaydidnthappen · 12/03/2021 08:57

We have a dishwasher but we rarely ever use it anymore because I never really saw the point- you need to basically clean everything before it goes in there anyway.

We couldn’t personally live without our dryer. We have 5 DC and use reusable nappies with the youngest two so it’s a lot of washing.

Felifox · 12/03/2021 09:14

I've used a tumble dryer for years, often just to get creases out to minimise ironing. I prefer to dry outside where possible but living in Cornwall where the air can be damp in the winter months I don't add to it by hanging clothes over radiators. It can add mould and make asthma worse. I do have a dishwasher

BoJoHoNo · 12/03/2021 10:01

I would definitely replace my dishwasher asap if it were to breakdown. No faffing around playing drying rack jenga or having to dry one load of dishes before you can wash the next. Never had a separate washer and dryer, but DP decided to buy an all in one washer dryer about a month ago. I'm still undecided about it. It does get laundry bone dry, but a wash and dry takes almost 4 hours and it has shrunk a few things.

Redruby2020 · 12/03/2021 10:26

@LIZS

Dishwasher used daily, dryer in winter for sheets/towels but do have a ceiling airer.
Ooh what's a ceiling airer? Sorry not being thick
Redruby2020 · 12/03/2021 10:29

@TeddyBeans

I've got a washer dryer because the majority of my stuff isn't tumble dry-able but the stuff that is (bedding and towels mostly) isn't worth its own machine.

I wouldn't hesitate to get a dishwasher if I had space in my pokey little kitchen for one though

This is what I was thinking about getting, as I would just want a dryer for those items/coats occasionally, and if I had a build up of washing and needed to get some of it dried quickly. Can I ask what brand you have and how long you have had it for, I have heard of quite a few problems with these machines.
TheGoogleMum · 12/03/2021 10:30

We have a dishwasher and a washer/dryer. Both get used a lot! Dryer doesn't always fry perfectly and some things can't be tumble dried so still need an airer. Dishwasher gets used almost daily and I love it because I hate washing up

Redruby2020 · 12/03/2021 10:35

@MarkRuffaloCrumble

I wouldn’t get a washer/dryer in one tbh. They don’t do an amazing job as a dryer. If you can get a vented one and maybe put it in the garage if there isn’t room inside, or stack it on top of the washer if there’s room, that would change your life!!

I bought one for £50 from Facebook and it’s brilliant. Yes, it probably costs a bit in electricity but then having damp washing around your house is going to cause other issues so for the sake of a few pence a day it’s well worth it. The only thing is, there are certain things you won’t tumble - t shirts mainly, as they shrink, so would still need to air a few bits (or put them outside in summer). I recently swapped my old cheap tumble for an expensive heat pump one which is supposed to be better for not shrinking stuff, but shirts and 100% cotton bedding comes out all screwed up, so I joe hang them up instead of t shirts - I kind of wish I still had my old one back!

What about those of us who don't live in a house or ground floor accommodation with a garage/garden/and everything else 😑
shouldistop · 12/03/2021 10:38

@Redruby2020 I think pp will be talking about an old fashioned pulley. I had one in my old house, it was great.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 12/03/2021 10:42

Dishwasher but no dryer.

However, I don't do the amount of laundry a day that you do. A dehumidifier (with a laundry setting) and heated clothes horse can cope with my needs.
