To ask whether you have a dryer and/ or dishwasher?

We have never had the money or room for either but I need a new washer anyway.

I don't think I'd use the dishwasher however if I got the drier I wouldn't need to have the airer in the kitchen. Obviously most washer / driers are double the cost of a washer on its own.

My parents had a dryer over 20 years ago and I remember my dad saying they cost a lot to run.

Are either worth it?

Both.
The dishwasher is used daily (me and 2 teens).
The tumble dryer hasn't been used in months. I put most my washing out on the line to dry or the airer at the top of the stairs. Approx two loads a day. My house is warm though.
I don't plan to replace the tumble dryer when it comes to the end of its life.

MumUndone · 11/03/2021 20:56

I have a dishwasher and dryer. If I had to choose , it would definitely be the dishwasher. I couldn't go back to hand washing dishes every day, such a chore - whereas washing can easily be dried on a clothes horse, radiators, or washing line.

FOJN · 11/03/2021 20:58

I have both. The dishwasher goes on about twice a week and I only use the dryer to give towels 20 minutes to fluff up when they're nearly dry otherwise I use airers or line dry. I would definitely replace the dishwasher if it broke but would get a heated airer if the dryer broke.

tararabumdeay · 11/03/2021 21:02

"I then rack dry in a spare room."

Oh yes, the spare room! Erm, what's that.

I guess it comes down to do you mind washing up more than faffing about with clothes in the cold and the rain?

happymummy12345 · 11/03/2021 21:04

We have neither because we don't have space for either unfortunately. If we did it would be a dishwasher 100%. I hate tumble dryers so I'd never ever have or use one.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 11/03/2021 21:05

I have a dishwasher and a washer/ dryer. I don’t have space for three things.

The washer / dryer does seem to get blocked more easily than a washer or dryer would.

Mum2jenny · 11/03/2021 21:12

Got a washer/dryer and a dishwasher. The real problem is the wager/ dryer only dries around half of the real washer load. So to do a complete washer/ dryer cycle you need a loaf of around 2.5kg which is a bit crap!!

CharlieRummer · 11/03/2021 21:13

Washer / Dryers are not very good from my experience, even the popular branded ones. We have a separate dryer tucked in the coal shed (I know lol, it's the only space we had) and in the winter it's a god send.

We've also got a slimline cheap dishwasher and it does our family fine. We hand wash some things, and dishwash the rest. As the chief dishwasher before we got this, I can honestly say that was our best investment.

NotMeekNotObedient · 11/03/2021 21:15

I'd been warned off washer driers - but we didn't have space for both. Love it. Hate using my parents' separates and waiting for stuff to stop washing to move it to the drier. It does take longer to dry things as the drum is wet when it starts. Mine is integrated so also pretty tiny - my loads are smaller but that's ok as I split out to keep colours nice anyway. I think what with lack of space in Chinese cities washer driers have come on a long way in recent years. Ours wasn't expensive but was Which reccomended.

We also have a dishwasher. DH was insistant we didn't need one but its been great.

I'd go for the washer drier over the dishwasher purely for health reasons - mould caused by drying on radiators is horrid.

Springsoonplease · 11/03/2021 21:30

We have a small kitchen with no room for dishwasher. However we do have a pantry and we put one in there and its amazing . Clear kitchen is bliss ! .we have a tumble drier with a tube in the shed and the hot air comes out of the tube. Washer dryers have mixed views so this is why we chose a normal washing machine and a dryer .

steff13 · 11/03/2021 22:04

We have both, and I wouldn't want to do without either of them.

FangsForTheMemory · 11/03/2021 22:06

I’ve got a dishwasher and a dehumidifier so I can dry clothes inside.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/03/2021 22:08

Neither, I don't have space.

FarTooMuchWashing · 11/03/2021 22:08

Love my dishwasher.
We had a dryer 20 years ago (but didn’t use it - it was an integrated one so I felt like I was paying to dry the machine before drying clothes). Haven’t had one since I replaced it and I used washable nappies on my DC. I have a airer for r we hen it’s too wet outside otherwise clothes go on the washing line. Works for me. I’m in south central England, so it does rain but we manage fine.

grapewine · 11/03/2021 22:09

Both and I wouldn't be without either. If I had to choose, I'd keep the dryer. I haven't the will to airdry superking sheets and bedding!

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 11/03/2021 22:10

I have a very efficient heat pump dryer and a very efficient dishwasher and I bloody love them.

But

  • we are cash rich time poor, neither appliance was cheap but its worth it to us as we just have so little time - using them gives me precious extra time for the kids.
  • we have a separate utility where the dryer is so it didnt mean compromising on kitchen space
QueenOfPain · 11/03/2021 22:10

Wouldn’t be without my tumble dryer and can’t wait to have a dishwasher!

SoUmmYeah · 11/03/2021 22:14

We have both.

Dishwashers can be very cheap - we got one for £99 from a "seconds" shop. Best one we've had.

sausagerollcake · 11/03/2021 22:19

Dishwasher and tumble dryer here, I love both of them but dishwasher is probably more essential as I can dry clothes on the Aga.

We always had both growing up but the tumble dryer wasn't in the house which was a bit of a pain.

weegiemum · 11/03/2021 22:23

Have both, the dishwasher is by far the most used (every day) rather than the dryer (weekly if that). We have room for an airier and a warm house.

hullabaloo19 · 11/03/2021 22:31

I have a dishwasher and I love it sooo much 😂 washing up was my most hated chore so it's definitely made a massive difference to me

tabernacles · 11/03/2021 22:31

I don't have either. I've never had a dishwasher (and don't intend to), and I got rid of my dryer a while ago in favour of a heated airer (which I do not regret).

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 11/03/2021 22:35

I had to choose between tumble dryer or dishwasher. I chose tumble dryer. I can wash dishes easily enough, I can't dry clothes and sheets.

Scrumbleton · 11/03/2021 22:51

Have both couldn’t do without either. Everything goes in the drier- straight out folded and away - no clothes hanging about for me

PickAChew · 11/03/2021 22:57

Have both. Knackered dryer is more of an arse ache than knackered dishwasher. Not as much as a knackered washer would be, though.
