To ask whether you have a dryer and/ or dishwasher?

We have never had the money or room for either but I need a new washer anyway.

I don't think I'd use the dishwasher however if I got the drier I wouldn't need to have the airer in the kitchen. Obviously most washer / driers are double the cost of a washer on its own.

My parents had a dryer over 20 years ago and I remember my dad saying they cost a lot to run.

Are either worth it?

Just me and DD. Family of 2. I would discount buying a place if it didn't have space for my tumble dryer. Inherited a half size dishwasher when I moved in but it was broken. Was one of the first things I replaced. I'm all for labour saving devices.

Oceanbliss · 12/03/2021 04:46

I bought my first dishwasher 6 months ago. Best purchase ever! Love, love, love my dishwasher Star It’s a freestanding one that I have in my bathroom/laundry and I have to share the laundry tap with my washing machine and dishwasher. So worth it. Wish I had bought one sooner. I hate washing dishes by hand so much and was a sleep deprived mummy so started using paper plates. Grin Now as soon as we finish eating we put our plates etc straight into the dishwasher and when it is full (after dinner) put it on and let it wash the dishes for me while I do bedtime routine. After bedtime routine I now get to have a bit of relaxation time before I go to bed. Love my dishwasher.

I only just recently got a dryer and didn’t realise just how useful it would be. It’s a new heat condenser one so doesn’t cost the earth to run. I could never be without one now.
I also have a dishwasher which is used daily. Whilst I’m also heavily reliant on it, if I had to sacrifice one for the other it would be the dishwasher for the dryer. I don’t mind washing up dishes... but I’m overjoyed that I no longer have to cram five people’s washing on to clothes horses and various radiators in the winter!

Anne1958 · 12/03/2021 05:03

Due to the size of our household we have 2 dishwashers, 2 washing machines and a tumble dryer. The tumble dryer is only used in the summer when outside temps make hanging washing out very difficult.
Cost wise it adds up but by July my entire house will be running on solar energy to try and lessen our impact on the environment.

WeWereNotOnABreak · 12/03/2021 05:23

I use the dryer daily for towels, muslins (for the baby) to make them soft and fluffy, and for anything (like skinny jeans) that I want to shrink back to the original shape. In the winter I dry everything in there to an "almost dry" state and then finish them on the airer, after giving them a little stretch first. In the summer I tumble everything for 10 minutes and then hang it on my garden airer - takes the wrinkles out.
I haven't ironed in years thanks to my dryer, unless I need something REALLY pressed (like my ex husbands shirts) or to put burn holes in (like my ex husbands shirts).
I use my dishwasher daily, sometimes twice daily. Until my dishwasher I was doing 4/5/6 huge loads of washing up a day - I have 2 very hungry boys and my parents are in and out of my house all day as well as builders all day, everyday for 2 years, needing cups of tea.
So yeah, I couldn't function without mine and think they're totally worth it.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 12/03/2021 05:36

I have an old fashioned spin drier - it was really hard to find, but its brilliant.
We have a communal laundry room in our apartment block, so hard to use the washing machine solely for a spin-dry.
I bought it initially for the few things that I hand wash, but use it for most things now. It generally removes a litre or more of water from a single washload, meaning it dries on an airer really quickly, Because I fold the clothes flat before spinning, they come out crease free, whereas on a fast spin in a washing machine, they come out really creased.
Cheap to run, takes up no more space than a rubbish bin.
they're on Amazon now - Thomas Spin Dryer

Dishwasher used daily, drier (part of a washer/drier combo) is used for towels and ‘mum I need my PE kit now and it’s still in my bag ‘ emergencies only. I’d sell a kidney to keep the dishwasher.

RestingPandaFace · 12/03/2021 05:55

Used to have a washer and a separate confessor dryer. When the washer packed in I got a washer dryer and separate dishwasher. I would never go back. Use the washer dryer at least once a day, it’s no more expensive to run than before, and it doesn’t take much longer than separate cycles in the old machines. The drying capacity is a little smaller than the washing capacity (5kg) to 8 kg) so if you want to dry stuff you just keep the load size a little smaller.

PaperMonster · 12/03/2021 06:15

I have neither!

Notjustanymum · 12/03/2021 06:18

We have both, but luckily, a utility room for the washer and dryer (dishwasher in kitchen). If I had to choose, it would be the dishwasher, but if we didn’t have the utility room for drying, it would be the dryer as I can’t stand clothes airing over radiators or in living/bedrooms...

ShonkyCat · 12/03/2021 06:37

We have both but I don't think either is essential.

The drier in particular is only used in winter and then mainly for towels and bedding. Lots of our clothes specifically say not tumble dry them, so I don't. I ruined a perfectly decent (and quite expensive) pair of jeans by putting them in the dryer and don't want to make that mistake again.

We also all (family of four) regularly wear clothes (excluding underwear and sports gear) more than once before washing them so we don't have huge amounts of washing.

And I don't mind washing up by hand so could happily live without the dishwasher.

GreenBalaclava · 12/03/2021 06:38

Dishwasher use daily (family of 5), no drier here.

violetbunny · 12/03/2021 06:43

Modern dryers are more energy efficient. Ours uses heat pump technology for energy efficiency.

YellowDaffidols · 12/03/2021 06:49

Just a dishwasher here.
Hang stuff outside year round except when it's raining. Gets them started so they can finish on airers in winter.

Umbongoumbongo999 · 12/03/2021 07:05

I have both and wouldn't be without either. My dryer is upstairs in our dressing room which makes it so much easier to put clean laundry straight into the wardrobes. If I could I would have my washing machine moved too, and have them both upstairs American-style.

My dryer is a heat pump AA rated and very quiet. It is a godsend in the rainy north from September to May. In the summer I still hang washing out

BonnieDundee · 12/03/2021 07:15

I have dryer but no dishwasher. I used to have a d/w. I miss it. I got my first TD the first winter after my first DC was born. I could not be without it. Ideally I would have both

changingnames786 · 12/03/2021 07:23

That's like Sophie's Choice!

I'd get a washer dryer (ours is actually very good, can't do huge loads and we have an additional dryer in garage for bedding but would be better than no dryer) and a dishwasher.

I think I'd prioritise dishwasher as we clean more for meals than we do for clothes.

Mascaramademehappy · 12/03/2021 07:34

Washer dryer combos are notorious for being rubbish at drying. They take an age and things are not 100% dry. I had one and it was awful.

I would have a dryer over a dishwasher though, I quite like washing dishes

changingnames786 · 12/03/2021 07:48

@Mascaramademehappy I know they are "notorious" for poor drying, that's why we kept our old dryer in the garage, but as I said, ours is actually very good and I only really use the one in the garage when I've got a lot to get through (quicker to have two machines on the go!) and tumble dryer is better for bedding.

GoLightlyontheEarth · 12/03/2021 07:51

I couldn’t live without a dishwasher. I’ve stoooed using the drier as my energy bills go through the roof when I use it. It’s a heat pump drier too!

Soontobe60 · 12/03/2021 07:57

If I had to choose, I would have a tumble dryer rather than a dishwasher. Wet washing hanging round the house for days on end is a depressing sight, and the dampness it produces is detrimental to both the fabric of the house (leading to mould etc) and also to the health of people living there.
When I had a young family, I bought a dishwasher much to my DHs disgust - he thought it was a waste of time and money. It didn't take long for him to change his mind!!

Atrixie · 12/03/2021 07:57

I have both and he’ll would freeze over before I got rid of either of them. I could manage without a dishwasher but never without a drier

WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 12/03/2021 07:59

Life would be so much harder without both. They both get used every single day in our house. I'm hoping when the kids are older we won't need the dryer half as much but honestly the amount of time it will have saved this last 8 yrs is unreal.

felulageller · 12/03/2021 08:02

Couldn't live without either!

mindutopia · 12/03/2021 08:04

Dishwasher, yes. It's a life saver. We run it once a day and no way we'd have time to do that many dishes. Dryer, yes, only because it was here with the house. I've never used it though and dh has used it maybe twice in two years. It takes a loooooong time to dry anything and frankly it's faster to put something on the radiator or out in the sun. Most clothes are dry overnight for the next morning anyway, so I don't really see the point. I wouldn't intentionally buy one. But I guess it depends on your space. We have plenty of space for an air dryer.
