To think DH is being a dick with the pram?

Ffs.

Dd 4 months. Sod all to do at weekends other than go for walks.

We have a baby carrier but DH is obsessed with the pram and insists on putting the poor child in it trudging through thick mud, clambering up mountains and hills and clattering over bumpy gravelly roads.

My nice pram is covered in mud and people look at us like we are batshit.

AIBU?

I can't understand using a buggy/pram in normal conditions, so have no idea why anyone would on a muddy hilly walk. I know I'm not exactly representive of most people though - I have never used a buggy/pram.

Sheeeeeep · 01/03/2021 18:55

Yeah but yoni you can surely see how it goes. Pram is filthy, my car is therefore filthy, DH is working so pram stays filthy.

No objections to it being used at all! But walking through bogs and over massive tree roots and up mountains is madness!

@Dipi79

LTB 😎
😂 totally.

Or just tell him you're taking the sling next time if it is that important to you. Confused about why the final say is his 🙄

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 01/03/2021 18:57

OP what's his reasons for not using a sling/carrier

EvilOnion · 01/03/2021 18:59

Can you organise a sling consultation/hire with DH so that he can try some different ones on and see if he feels comfortable carrying DS in it?

We used the pram everywhere with #1 but #2 wouldn't be put down so after a trip to the sling library we both chose our own and used them. DH's favourite pastime after that was dancing hoovering with #2 giggling over his shoulder 😁

Bigoldmachine · 01/03/2021 18:59

Yeah I would just insist on carrying the baby in the carrier, that is madness.

I’m afraid yes I would look at you like you were nuts if I saw you pushing a buggy out where we live! We use various different slings - pushchair is only for on pretty much smooth ground - it’d be a nightmare up hills, through mud, over rocks, I don’t know even how your DH manages it! He must be bloody knackered!

QueenOfLabradors · 01/03/2021 18:59

DH does not use the pram in the week, that is me. Therefore it is either down to me to clean it or my car that gets covered in half the contents of every bog from mountain and moorland.

If he befouls it, he needs to clean it and the mess it spreads. Yanbu.

gmailconfusion2 · 01/03/2021 19:00

We had a venicci, it wasn't suited to our lifestyle of off road walks, mountains, sand, i hated it, it was huge. There are times that a pram is better than the carrier (we use both) Best thing i did was shouting at DH i didnt care who gave us the pram it wasn't what we needed for our lifestyle and we weren't consulted with it and i was going to go buy a mountain buggy or a phil and ted sports. Ended up being phil and ted and its made my life so much easier, smaller folded up and can handle our treks!

Also bonus points as if by myself i can lift it over the styles/kissing gates as the venicci i had to completely dismantle to do so.

FTEngineerM · 01/03/2021 19:00

@PurBal I’d probably wait until you have DC strapped to your chest ok muddy mountain terrain walks before commenting. 10kg strapped to you is no mean feat.

If he wants to use the pram he cleans the pram, just leave it in his way.. or in his car.

Ileflottante · 01/03/2021 19:02

@Sheeeeeep

I’d carry her! I think he is uncomfortable with it as evidenced by constant cries of ‘oh careful mummy!’ Angry but so so SO much easier than getting a pram up a fucking mountain!
“Careful mummy” would get right on my wick. Confused
Fuckadoodledoooo · 01/03/2021 19:02

Like a PP, I have a second hand, very old pushchair for muddy, bumpy walks. Big wheels, cover the back of the car with a bin bag to shove it on after.

Keeps the everyday pushchair nice.

My middle child hated any type of sling or carrier. She would scream blue murder.

SleepingStandingUp · 01/03/2021 19:04

The question is op

Why is his say final?

Why are baby expenses all yours?

roarfeckingroarr · 01/03/2021 19:06

YANBU at all. I always take the carrier with us in the bottom of the pram just in case 4 month old DS decides he's had enough pram.

Using the pram how you describe sounds like madness

extentioncord · 01/03/2021 19:06

Believe me we get ‘what the fuck are you people actually doing to that child’ looks!

No you don't. Nobody is remotely interested.

MyLittleOrangutan · 01/03/2021 19:10

I think people are thinking you mean walks through the woods or over hills. I read it as the kind of hikes we do that are steep, rocky and small paths. We've discussed our plan for hiking with baby and it will be me carrying baby in a quality carrier and him carrying a backpack. I cant think of any of our favourite hikes that would be suitable with a pushchair. I think some would actually be dangerous to have a pushchair on. With a carrier you have them close to your body, you have your hands free, and you're not taking up the whole path. I can imagine thinking "wtf are you doing" if we had to pass a couple with a pushchair on some of our hikes, would probably think you're either lost or have very irresponsibly not read into the hike you're doing and have come unprepared

As far as cleaning, leave it outside and tell him to get it cleaned before it comes in the house.

candlemasbells · 01/03/2021 19:10

I agree you need a second hand off roader
I told DP we needed a off roading buggy and he was paying, he thought it would be a few hundred. I got an old silver cross sleepover on the bouncy chassis for £25 and there’s nothing it can’t handle.
My nice pushchair stays nice

DavidsSchitt · 01/03/2021 19:11

Nobody is staring at you, nobody gives a shit. You're exaggerating.

Baby carriers through bogs and over muddy tree stumps and up mountains are just as impractical and yes, not as safe as her being in the pushchair.

However, if he's insisting on the pushchair then more fool you for not telling him to clean it.

SleepingStandingUp · 01/03/2021 19:12

No you don't. Nobody is remotely interested. Ah yes MN where no one judges anyone for anything and no one noticed anyone else ever. I can categorically say of I saw a couple hauling a full pram through a big or down a Mountain side I'd Def look twice, assume they'd never been there before and wonder why they didn't use a carrier.

Sheeeeeep · 01/03/2021 19:12

Oh you’re THERE are you, david? Goodness me!

Sheeeeeep · 01/03/2021 19:13

mylittle yeah I don’t think people are appreciating I am talking about a pram being dragged through bogs, mountainsides and the like Grin but hey david follows us around Hmm

If your 4 month old weighs 10kg, you are over-feeding them.

I still put DS4 in a sling on my back when he gets tired on day hikes. He’s 15kg, same weight as most backpacks. I’m 5’2. It is fine - certainly easier than pushing a pram over a muddy field. Would be even easier for DH.

RandomMess · 01/03/2021 19:16

If I saw someone with a non all terrain pushchair on that kind of hike I would think them mad and the damage they were doing to the pushchair!!
It sounds like the kind of walking where it's front or back carrier friendly only.

FolkSongSweet · 01/03/2021 19:16

I’d prob look strangely at a couple pushing a city pram through muddy fields near us.

We use a sling for muddy/hilly walks (on to my second child here if anyone doubts my credentials!). Not sure why there’s more of a risk of falling with a sling than say tipping the pram over or having it roll away. Plus there’s the mess with the pram and it’s just not fun for the person pushing it either!

OP why don’t you just insist on carrying your child for one walk and let him see how much better it is?

MizMoonshine · 01/03/2021 19:16

Nah I'm with your DH. That's the kind of terrain I'd like my baby in the protection of a pram for. If you slip in the mud/up the mountain/on the gravel, you're going down with the baby. I'd much rather the pram!

FTEngineerM · 01/03/2021 19:17

@Changechangychange I didn’t say my 4m old weighs 10kg, but my child does (not 4m old).. so a sling is not always easier or practical as the comment I quoted suggested.
