Question for couples. Double or King size?

I moved in with my partner 6 months ago and everything is great except he has a double bed and I'm a restless sleeper and he gives off a ton of heat.
I've said we should get a king size as that's what most people have.
He seems to think it's not the bed and that I'm the one with a problem and that most people have double beds and get on alright with them.
I'd have a super king if it was me but the room wouldn't take it.
So AIBU for not wanting to spend every night squashed up in a double bed?
If you're a couple what do you have?

Superking if at all possible. Even if the room was only 6 inches wider than the bed which was the only thing in it, I would still have one and improvise everything else around it.

If, and only if, a superking was a complete impossibility I would have a king size & 2 single duvets as the next best option. Single duvets are a game-changer.

We have a king - DH is 6ft 3, plus our bedroom is big and a double looks quite lost in it.

We can manage fine in a double though, and sleep in one regularly when visiting his parents (pre covid). But then we were both raised in families where its consider absurd to give teenagers double beds to themselves.....when you are used to sleeping in a single bed alone a double with a partner isnt so bad.

APurpleSquirrel · 24/02/2021 17:56

We have a double that DHs granddad made for us - we manage fine but yhen we sent two years at Uni sleeping in our single beds together when we were dating!
However, when we do move I'd love to upgrade to a King.
Had a Super King in hotels but find they are too big! & DH & I are reasonably tall & im not thin so I guess everyone is different.

Expectingsomethingwonderful · 24/02/2021 17:56

Superking (singles zipped together).

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 24/02/2021 17:57

Wouldn't move in with someone who cared so little about my comfort, opinion and lack of sleep.

CecilyP · 24/02/2021 17:57

Tell him the last time you had a sleeping space that narrow you were in a cot!

HunterAngel · 24/02/2021 17:59

King with a super king duvet! DH is a nuclear reactor and an awful cover stealer, the larger duvet is a marriage saver!

AnneLovesGilbert · 24/02/2021 17:59

We were happy with a double for years, slept great. Got a king because my mum wanted a double instead of a king so we swapped when I was due DD and she’s still in with us half the night at nearly 2 so it’s handy having the extra space. I know hardly anyone with a king.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 24/02/2021 17:59

We had a double and moved upto a kingsize as soon as we moved and could fit one in , def better if you have the room

WinterStrawbsAreLikeTurnip · 24/02/2021 18:00

Super king!

lynsey91 · 24/02/2021 18:00

We have a double and it's fine. I can't think of any couple I know that have larger than a double

Kottbullar · 24/02/2021 18:02

DH and I slept in a single for years, even through a pregnancy!
Now we can afford more luxuries have a super king at DH's request he's tall so finds it preferable, however he doesn't sleep here for the vast majority of the year and it's far too big for little old me.

IsAnybodyListening · 24/02/2021 18:03

After YEARS of suffering in a double bed, (me always hanging off somehow with no duvet) I got a Super-king and it has been a bloody game changer.

Although putting the bedding on should be classed as an Olympic sport.

Weatherwax · 24/02/2021 18:03

Minimum king sized. We upgraded to a super king and its even better. All my friends that have bought new beds have gone up a size and would never go back.

I think that you cannot put a price on a good nights sleep, it affects everything so much, so if one person is struggling it should be fixed to help them sleep.

tigerbread20 · 24/02/2021 18:03

Super king. If we go away and there's a double bed I feel very claustrophobic

weegiemum · 24/02/2021 18:04

We have a double. I think we'd have a king size but there are too many bookcases in our bedroom!

SweetPetrichor · 24/02/2021 18:05

King sized for us. We had a double for years but when the bed needed replaced we upgraded. Best decision ever. He does t take up much room at all but I sleep on my front in a sprawl so the space stops me elbowing him or kneeing him!

BertieBotts · 24/02/2021 18:05

King size. Doubles are like something out of 1980! They are miniscule.

MyLittleOrangutan · 24/02/2021 18:05

King. I'd have a super king if it fit. Also need a duvet that's one size bigger than the bed!

therocinante · 24/02/2021 18:06

We have a double (it didn't occur to us to buy a king, seemed like something rich people do!) and we sleep terribly in it. We hate the bed itself anyway, we're on different sleep schedules, and we both snore and like very different mattress hardnesses. We sleep apart probably 6 nights a week now and we are both so much happier for it.

Until we get at least a king size, a new bed frame generally and preferably one of those fancy mattresses with two different sides I can't see that changing.

But... If I had the choice and could afford/fit it, definitely at least a king.

thriftyhen · 24/02/2021 18:06

King size and separate duvets.

minipie · 24/02/2021 18:06

King sized

We have been together since students when we shared a single bed so king size is luxury! Never felt the need for super king.

Double does feel tight - we were in a double for a year during building work and it was so much nicer going back to a king.

FirewomanSam · 24/02/2021 18:06

I lived in a rented furnished flat for a year where the landlord advertised a ‘standard double’ in my room. After squeezing into it with my then-boyfriend for months (and neither of us is exactly small!) I measured it and realised it wasn’t a double, it was a SMALL double i.e. 4ft 6 wide instead of 5ft. You wouldn’t believe 6 inches would make such a difference but my god it does.

Nowadays it’s most definitely king size for us, no question! Why would you not, if you have the space?

Bcnamechanger · 24/02/2021 18:06

Double.

Bought a new one last year - room and budget would have allowed king/super but we both like a cuddle.

Maybe it's practice - we spent three years sharing a 2'6" single.

Or a zero tolerance on kids in my bedroom so have never had to make space for interlopers.

Even when we have a choice of rooms with different sizes of bed on holiday, we always pick the double rather than the king.

jackstini · 24/02/2021 18:07

Double - but we are on the small side
Have king size bedding though!
