Question for couples. Double or King size?

I moved in with my partner 6 months ago and everything is great except he has a double bed and I'm a restless sleeper and he gives off a ton of heat.
I've said we should get a king size as that's what most people have.
He seems to think it's not the bed and that I'm the one with a problem and that most people have double beds and get on alright with them.
I'd have a super king if it was me but the room wouldn't take it.
So AIBU for not wanting to spend every night squashed up in a double bed?
If you're a couple what do you have?

How does it work with separate duvets in a king sized bed. Surely one or the other lies on it.

I have a king bed and super king sized duvet as husband is a duvet hogger.

Double bed here.

OH is 6ft 2 and I havent yet lost all my baby weight but double bed is big enough for us.

Ikora · 04/04/2021 10:03

When DH and I were first together as students we shared a single bed often. He is 6ft 2 but very slim as am I. We then bought a double bed but after we married we bought a king size bed

MereDintofPandiculation · 04/04/2021 14:47

Why would ANYONE say double?! Because anything larger takes up more room. Not everyone has a colour-supplement sized bedroom.

MySoCalledStrife · 04/04/2021 18:52
@MySoCalledStrife we are thinking of getting zipped mattresses - can you feel the join at all with a topper? We have an access issue with our stairs that means even a king size can’t get up (our current bed was put through the window when we had the windows replaced) so this is looking like our only option for a bigger bed.

Love our king size bed, but being pregnant and having a three year old who comes in every night, I am now hankering after a super king. I cannot bear to be touched by anyone in the night!
Hiya - we can't feel it, but the topper we have is a memory foam one from M&S which is very at least 6cm thick. Not sure if a fabric one might feel different? I took a lot of convincing on the zip lock, but wouldn't be without it now. Made life a lot easier when we moved as well in getting the mattress in and out!

fussychica · 04/04/2021 18:56

King but we are both relatively slim people, if we were bigger definitely a super king if it would fit in the room. Not had a standard double for years.

needmetime · 04/04/2021 19:00

Super king is my vote

Sexnotgender · 04/04/2021 19:00

DH and I are pretty regular sized (except I’m currently 9 months pregnant!) and we have a king. We could probably make do with a double but the bedroom is enormous and a king looked better.
I’d be happy in either.

queenofthenorthwest · 04/04/2021 19:06

You can get quilts that are hot one side and colder on the other. I think less tog.

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 04/04/2021 19:16

Only ever had a double. Kings used to really unusual till maybe 15-20 years ago, and I think a lot of people still have doubles. A lot of double bedrooms don't have space for a king. MN demographics maybe skewing the thread?

It's nice to have a jing on holidays, but doubles are fine for me. I'm a size 20 so not exactly slimline, and both my ex's were tubby chaps. I think the extra length makes a king better, rather than the width (ooer).

Our spare bed is a 4' one, and we can sleep well in that too on the odd night.

You must be very cuddly sleepers. I’m absolutely not a cuddly sleeper. I want no contact at all when I’m trying to sleep, any twitches or movement wake me up and we both find it too hot and uncomfortable being pressed up against the other for 8 hours a night. Not to mention the pins and needles, hair in the mouth and cramp associated with the arm arrangements for hours of cuddly sleep.
Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 04/04/2021 19:27

You don't really have to squash up in a double though. Its 4'6" wide, so unless you are both extremely big, there's plenty of room to sleep without touching or being right on the edge. I am so not a cuddly sleeper. We sometimes have to nudge a leg back over a bit of one of us tries to starfish, but otherwise we don't have contact.

honeylulu · 04/04/2021 19:41

I'd say have the biggest size bed your room can fit especially if you have small children who like to climb in with you. We have a king. A super king would have been even better but the rest of our furniture wouldn't have fitted.

As i said upthread, both DH and I are pretty average. I’m 5’8, he’s 5’10 and we are both within normal BMI range. Having a width of 2ft 3in, which is the width of a standard toddler bed (!) each to sleep in is small and you don’t have to be “extremely big” to find it a squash and a squeeze to sleep in as a regular sized adult.
BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 04/04/2021 19:43

Of course, I appreciate that some people have little or no choice but to sleep in a double due to room sizes, furniture budgets or inherited/loved antique pieces but let’s not pretend that they are vastly spacious.

randomsabreuse · 04/04/2021 19:45

King Size and get a Super king Duvet. I like space to sleep. We have a double with King Duvet but will definitely be getting a king-size when we move house.

DH would be finE with smaller but he is happy cuddling in his sleep, I usually find that the only bits of me get sleep if we're cuddling (usually an arm and a leg go to sleep!) so am definitely cuddle then roll away , preferably with mini cocoon of duvet over my shoulders!

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 04/04/2021 19:46

Superking

missbunnyrabbit · 04/04/2021 19:56

I have a king but I feel it's too big! I like to cuddle my bf so I think we'd be ok in a double!

Montsti · 04/04/2021 20:01

We have a super king. My children have queens...

cannaethink · 04/04/2021 20:10

I’ve got a European king size squeezed into a room that should probably have a single 😁 it takes up at least half the length of the room, and the whole width. My bf doesn’t live with me so I get it myself for the majority of the time. It’s awesome, I wouldn’t have it any other way!

LadyDanburysCane · 04/04/2021 22:03

Our kingsize is a zip and link mattress and TBH we usually wake up with us both on the same side of the join! I really wouldn’t mind going back to a double.....

PolytheneHam · 04/04/2021 22:09

We have a double but we like to be close to one another. The only problem is that DS has taken a liking to coming in with us so now we're all a bit squashed.

Fortunately DS is nearly 18 yo so long past that 😂
StoneofDestiny · 04/04/2021 22:33

King, but until 5 years ago we were fine in a double. (New house, new bed).
However - ironing king sized bedding is a PITA.

Trekkerbabe · 04/04/2021 22:51

Hypnos super king zip and link. Superb.
