Question for couples. Double or King size?

I moved in with my partner 6 months ago and everything is great except he has a double bed and I'm a restless sleeper and he gives off a ton of heat.
I've said we should get a king size as that's what most people have.
He seems to think it's not the bed and that I'm the one with a problem and that most people have double beds and get on alright with them.
I'd have a super king if it was me but the room wouldn't take it.
So AIBU for not wanting to spend every night squashed up in a double bed?
If you're a couple what do you have?

I feel like we're going against the grain here. We're both tall (I'm nearly 6ft and he's over 6ft) and we're slim but not skinny little slips of things, and we comfortably share a double. King size duvet is compulsory though! We we stay somewhere fancy with a massive bed I get confused in the night when I reach out and can't touch him Grin we would maybe upgrade to a king size if we fancied it (although not needing a new bed any time soon) but definitely not bigger than that!

We currently rent a furnished flat and have a double bed. It’s awful. As soon as we move into somewhere unfurnished we are getting a super king.

WeatherwaxOn · 03/04/2021 22:09

King size - would go for bigger if there was room for it!

LadyDanburysCane · 03/04/2021 22:10

We had a double for 32 years. Upgraded to a kingsize this year.... I think I preferred the double TBH.

Carrive · 03/04/2021 22:12

King size as a minimum - all doubles and kings in my house (two toddlers in double beds) and doubles have king size duvets - just makes life a lot more comfortable. Even try separate, single duvets - a hotel in Berlin did this one time and it changed my life during that very hot, summer holiday. Also, invest in good quality linen and cooking mattress topper for comfort.

Double, but wish we'd got a king. But is a king longer aswell as wider? We could go wider but not any longer. The rooms are small (new build with tiny bedrooms)

Carrive · 03/04/2021 22:13

*cooling mattress topper

thecatneuterer · 03/04/2021 22:40

@speakout

Two doubles- in separate rooms.
It's the only way.
linerforlife · 03/04/2021 22:43

Super king. No question 😎

toconclude · 03/04/2021 22:44

@SortYourLifeHelp

Superking.

Why would ANYONE say double?!

Because we couldn't possibly fit anything bigger in our bedroom - Victorian cottage. And the bedstead is a family heirloom that's 110 years old and we love it.
Yumskiyorks · 03/04/2021 22:52

Superking . However ee now sleep in differnt rooms and we sleep so well .

littlebillie · 03/04/2021 22:53

King

MrsKoala · 03/04/2021 22:55

When I met exH we were in halls. We both had singles and started off sleeping together like spoons in a drawer. We’d synchronise turning in our sleep. Then we moved in properly and got a double and still slept in the space of a single. We were like them poor animals rescued from the circus who only know a small cage. With my current H we have a super king, on the few occasions we get to sleep in the same bed it’s great because we still don’t need to touch each other Grin

I always laugh inside when I book a hotel for us and they say ‘oooooh we’ve got a lovely KING SIZE bed for you’ and I think oh shit don’t you have anything bigger.

When it comes to beds I’d say go the biggest you can. I regret not getting an emperor bed now we have more to accommodate.

PlasticDinosaur · 03/04/2021 22:57

King and separate duvets Grin we do love each other very much but have never slept better!

georgarina · 03/04/2021 23:02

King size. I'm 5'1 and a double wasn't big enough for me and DP.

KaleJuicer · 03/04/2021 23:05

Super King here.

notacooldad · 03/04/2021 23:06

King for us and double fir the kids when they became teens.

CaviarAndCigarettes · 03/04/2021 23:19

Super king all the way.
I wish our room was larger to accommodate an even bigger bed to be honest

DancesWithCatsnDogs · 03/04/2021 23:35

Super king all the way! However we migrate to each other sometimes and swap sides! But I could not fall asleep superglued to another person, unless I'd had a few!!

Howshouldibehave · 03/04/2021 23:53

Your OP isn’t about not having a bed and deciding what size you should get when you buy one though, is it?

Your boyfriend has a bed. You have moved in and decided it’s not big enough. He disagrees. This is a different question.

Choosing between a double (£800) and a kingsize £1000, for example) is v different to using the bed that’s already there and getting a kingsize (£1000).

I’m presuming the boyfriend wasn’t thinking about making quite a big expensive purchase at the moment?

Passiveobserver · 03/04/2021 23:58

Had a double for ages and didn’t question it but when my partner recently renewed the bed he went for a King size and it’s epic, we couldn’t go back to a double now, the king is luxury, don’t know how we ever slept comfortably in a double before.

GappyValley · 04/04/2021 00:01

King size should be the legal minimum

We aren’t big people by any stretch (I’m a size 10, DH is 5’11 and 32” waist) but when we have to share a standard double, we may as well be in a single bed. I can’t sleep properly at all...

Idontlikethatnameanymore · 04/04/2021 00:07

Twin super king sized! Sadly only in my dreams or occasionally we’ve had hotel rooms with this magnificent combo!

Idontlikethatnameanymore · 04/04/2021 00:08

And a duvet each

DPotter · 04/04/2021 00:23

King size - and separate duvets. I sleep soooo much better.

It doesn't matter what most people have - if you sleep better in a king size, that's the bed for you.
