Question for couples. Double or King size?

I moved in with my partner 6 months ago and everything is great except he has a double bed and I'm a restless sleeper and he gives off a ton of heat.
I've said we should get a king size as that's what most people have.
He seems to think it's not the bed and that I'm the one with a problem and that most people have double beds and get on alright with them.
I'd have a super king if it was me but the room wouldn't take it.
So AIBU for not wanting to spend every night squashed up in a double bed?
If you're a couple what do you have?

We have a superking bed. I love stretching out in bed.
I'd love an emperor size bed (7ft x 7ft.)
DC both have double beds.

hellcatspangle · 03/04/2021 21:36

No way could I sleep in a normal double...in fact the king size isn't even big enough for me. Love going to hotels with a super king!

Muminabun · 03/04/2021 21:37

Minimum king size with separate duvets.

ZednotZee · 03/04/2021 21:38

Double. DH will not even countenance the thought of anything larger.
Fwiw I would prefer a king, he has five stone on me and invariably end up with some heavy, muscular part of his anatomy resting on me at various points throughout the night. When DS4 decides to join us I might as well write the night off as a bad one.

But DH likes to 'be close' so yeah...Hmm

BrightYellowDaffodil · 03/04/2021 21:39

Had a king size bed with ex-OH and now I have a king size to myself. Planning to upgrade to a super king, all for meeeeee!

MySoCalledStrife · 03/04/2021 21:39

We have a super king and it saved our relationship! The game changer for us though was getting a zip locked mattress so we don't feel each other move in the night. I really recommend that. I thought one of us would roll into the join between them, but the topper we have over the mattress seems to stop that. If your room won't take a super king, definitely get a king size

Fiona1993 · 03/04/2021 21:39

Definitely king size! We have plenty of space!

We got a mattress from silent night and after almost 2 years noticed it was a bit broken, probably from moving it House 2x & they replaced it under their warranty.

I would never go back to a smaller bed.

YerAWizardHarry · 03/04/2021 21:40

We have a double currently. I’m 5ft 6 and DP 5 ft 8 and both quite slim and manage perfectly fine.

I want at least a King Size when we buy a house later this year but I wouldn’t be rushing out to buy it to be honest. For a decent bed and mattress you’re talking £1000+

snowone · 03/04/2021 21:42

King size is a must. Double beds are too bloody small!!

ZednotZee · 03/04/2021 21:42

I'm 5'9 and my feet hang off the edge of our double bed because I don't want my head squished against the headboard.

AlwaysColdHands · 03/04/2021 21:43

Separate rooms, king size each 😊 Makes me so happy

Shufflebumnessie · 03/04/2021 21:45

We have a king size but will go for super king when we get our next bed (sometime in the distant future!).

Vindicated2021 · 03/04/2021 21:48

Had a double for 14 years... Just got an IKEA king, so bigger than standard king, but smaller than a super....... God we have missed out these past 14 years. It's huge and comfortably fits both of us (neither are small) a 7 year and a 2 year old 😊

Guavasarethenewpink · 03/04/2021 21:51

Super king all the way!

flowerycurtain · 03/04/2021 21:52

@AlwaysColdHands us too.

We tried to sleep in the same bed in the early years of our marriage.

There would have been no later years if we continued!!

qate · 03/04/2021 21:52

We're in rented due to work at the moment so we have an emperor - it's ludicrous but also brilliant. I'd go for a super king providing you have enough space, otherwise a king. I hate sleeping I double now esp now we have a toddler who launches himself in at 4am now and again!

Benfoldslanded · 03/04/2021 21:54

Happily sleep in a double with DH, have done for nearly 25 years. Love the closeness. Too cold in a king.

greeneyedlulu · 03/04/2021 21:55

King! And maybe separate single duvets for you each.

Okaythenno · 03/04/2021 21:57

King with a super king duvet! Allows for snuggles but no fighting over duvet rations.

JetBlackSteed · 03/04/2021 21:58

Super king size here. Love it.

@ParisJeTAime can you rehang your bedroom door so it opens the other way? As in move the hinges and/or have it open outward

Badabingbadabum · 03/04/2021 22:00

King. I'd love a superking, its on the 'things to buy one day' list!

Coachee · 03/04/2021 22:01

@MySoCalledStrife we are thinking of getting zipped mattresses - can you feel the join at all with a topper? We have an access issue with our stairs that means even a king size can’t get up (our current bed was put through the window when we had the windows replaced) so this is looking like our only option for a bigger bed.

Love our king size bed, but being pregnant and having a three year old who comes in every night, I am now hankering after a super king. I cannot bear to be touched by anyone in the night!

Silverfly · 03/04/2021 22:01

King size

Saracen · 03/04/2021 22:02

Who cares what most people have? The point is YOU aren't comfortable in a double, so you need a king.

If there is any possibility of small children appearing, a king is particularly good.
