AIBU?

Aibu to think that serving potatoes at all with salmon en croute is just unnecessary carbohydrates

Further to the thread on boiled potatoes, from what I could glean not one person pointed out that you are serving carbohydrates with what should be already an ample portion of carbohydrates in the pastry. We have salmon en croute with extra green veg to fill everyone up. Is it just me or do people not get what a healthy portion (especially carbohydrates) actually is? Don't get me started on garlic bread being served with pasta.......🤬

I was slightly taken aback in Scotland to get my macaroni cheese with garlic bread and chips, but it was certainly value for money.

I had soup for dinner though. Everything in moderation, including moderation.

It's against the law to eat a sandwich without crisps. Also the crisps have to match the sandwich.

Why does mumsnet hate carbs so much? :(

What on earth is weird about pasta and garlic bread?

I think it's bit of a British thing? As far as I know Italians don't do it and where I grew up we didn't either (central europe)

@Fiona2020 Oh me too but it has to be roast and mash? If someone put boiled potatoes on my Sunday roast there’d be mutiny 😉

I've just Googled pie and mash delivery from my favourite pie shop 60 miles away. They deliver!! I'm so excited I'm going to buy myself pie and mash for my birthday 🥧 🎂.

it was the suggestion on that thread that someone had dauphinoise potatoes with salmon en croute that made me want to weep. Not from the carbiness of it, but from the clash of rich garlicky cream sauce on the potatoes and the light fresh watercressy magical innard. Both excellent alone, but combined adn then with buttery pastry as well? an absolute assault on the poor old tastebuds. Down with that sort of thing

I'm quite partial to a lasagne sandwich...

@Abouttimemum boiled potatoes are fine if they are covered with a lot of fresh mint and butter!

I've never known a place as weird about food as mumsnet

Oh well, that's fish and chips out of the window then. Why would anyone need chips when you've got all that carb-laden batter?

It is literally the job of garlic bread to mop up the sauce from a pasta dish
waits to be told you've made too much sauce in that case

YANBU. I love carbs. If you don't want that many, don't eat them, but don't pretend that you don't understand that your way is not the only way.

I often have garlic bread with pizza. So shoot me.

Both of us are fat bastards though. We had takeaway pizza on Saturday and made a conscious decision not to order garlic bread because of it.

Totally agree OP

This is because nobody gives a fuck or has the time to be arsed being bitchy about what someone else eats.

You should try it sometime, I don't know about your BMI but it would certainly lighten your mood.

Don't worry. Having read the thread, I don't think anybody's interested in your opinions on garlic bread and pasta being served together. Did you think they would be? Are you interested in what anybody else thinks about garlic bread and pasta being served together? Or was your post simply a case of 'Hey, look how low carb I am! The rest of you are so stupid that you're doing it all wrong!'

I've lost a huge amount of weight and have carbs at most meals - sometimes double carbs and even triple carbs.

Carbs are not the enemy

I'm sure if we looked hard enough, we could find somewhere in Scotland that would serve a macaroni cheese pie with chips and garlic bread.

Quadruple carbs. Imagine that.

Ok, this has been bothering me for some time and I have to ask...if you can't at garlic bread with pasta, what do you eat it with? I wouldn't eat garlic bread on it's own as a meal so surely it's meat to be an accompaniment for SOMETHING?!

Report
AlmightyBob · 23/02/2021 10:20

Also, it's my eldest's birthday tomorrow and his only lockdown birthday wish was for Dominoes pizza so I will be eating pizza AND garlic bread TOGETHER.
