Aibu to think that serving potatoes at all with salmon en croute is just unnecessary carbohydrates

Further to the thread on boiled potatoes, from what I could glean not one person pointed out that you are serving carbohydrates with what should be already an ample portion of carbohydrates in the pastry. We have salmon en croute with extra green veg to fill everyone up. Is it just me or do people not get what a healthy portion (especially carbohydrates) actually is? Don't get me started on garlic bread being served with pasta.......🤬

You know that if you have a lovely clear soup with some carrot and sweet potato pieces in it, that's also double carbing?

Salmon en croute isn't exactly your every Monday night fare. Sometimes when people cook an exciting meal they're guided by the enjoyment factor, not the nutritional contents. That's usually not considered a war crime.

AlmightyBob · 23/02/2021 10:21

@FuckyouCovid21

I've lost a huge amount of weight and have carbs at most meals - sometimes double carbs and even triple carbs.

Carbs are not the enemy

Indeed! Carbs are, in fact, the body's preferential energy source. And they're delicious! Win win.
MotherOfChaos28 · 23/02/2021 10:21

I’m making a roast tonight and there may be divorce proceedings if dh doesn’t have roast and mash potatoes as well as Yorkshire pudding. He even had toast for breakfast too the absolute horror.

Peanutbutterblood · 23/02/2021 10:21

Duck off, carbs are life

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 23/02/2021 10:22

Salmon en croute and potatoes is an upgraded version of fish and chips.

And I would happily eat it - with the potatoes cooked in any way - if someone made it for me.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 23/02/2021 10:22

@Sunshineandflipflops

Ok, this has been bothering me for some time and I have to ask...if you can't at garlic bread with pasta, what do you eat it with? I wouldn't eat garlic bread on it's own as a meal so surely it's meat to be an accompaniment for SOMETHING?!
Starter? It's an adapted bruschetta, isn't it. 🤔

It's good enough for Gordon

You should try 'alu parathas'. It's a chapati with potato stuffing.
So carbs stuffed in carbs and shallow fried in oil or butter. Grin

I eat it with a dip of coriander pesto type chutney to give the illusion of healthiness.

PurpleDaisies · 23/02/2021 10:23

When did carbs become the devil? Carbs are fine.

Grapesoda7 · 23/02/2021 10:24

What about if you have a physical job?

Do you think salmon en croute and green veg will be a filling meal for a 6ft 2 man who's worked on a building site all day?

JaywickCaravanOfLust · 23/02/2021 10:24

I didn't realise people actually ate potatoes. What a strange idea. It would never cross my mind to do so.

They sound delicious. I love focaccia baked with thinly sliced potatoes on top.
cricketmum84 · 23/02/2021 10:24

Unfortunately I have to eat very low carb for health reasons.

You are all being vvvv unreasonable to make me crave all the carbs with your triple carb meals Grin

PurpleDaisies · 23/02/2021 10:26

It’s not a filling meal for a 5ft7 woman who has mainly sat on the sofa with a laptop.

extentioncord · 23/02/2021 10:26

No no. That is an absolute downgrade

Fish and chips is life.

Anything en croute is pretentious pish.

MagicSummer · 23/02/2021 10:26

So what? I have potatoes EVERY night and love them! I don't eat pasta at all and rice very occasionally. Guess what, I have pudding too!

LolaSmiles · 23/02/2021 10:26

Why does mumsnet hate carbs so much?
It's only some mumsnet mummies that hate carbs, usually whilst claiming their tall, skinny, athletic sons wolf down 6 potions of carbs a meal and never put a pound on, and their DH also eats huge amounts and never gains weight because he is on the go all day.Smile

lidoshuffle · 23/02/2021 10:26

Following from the 70s food thread, as kids we used to eat Vesta beef curry with extra rice, chips AND bread and butter. We were as slim as whippets because we used to move.

MacDuffsMuff · 23/02/2021 10:26

Gosh, you're amazing. Grin

No 'huge salad'? Tut, tut.

EuroTrashed · 23/02/2021 10:26

we seem to be overlooking the naturally glorious carbiness of the compulsory peas and carrots with this dish. Can't we become outraged about them or are they off limits for outrage as more colourful?

Watercoloursky · 23/02/2021 10:26

When I visit my OH's family in Liverpool we sometimes get curry, rice, and chips from the takeaway. All mixed together. Tis the food of the gods!

MrsWindass · 23/02/2021 10:26

Christ you must have a really boring life !

OldRailer · 23/02/2021 10:27

I do think potatoes are shunned partly because of lack of colour.

Ah but it can be now that Aldi sell a huge slab of it out of the freezer which is an absolute steal! It states it serves 4 but in our house is just the right amount for me and 2 primary age dc along with lots of veg and some sort of potato accompaniment. With out the potato part we'd be hungry in an hours time and end up eating junk. All very slim too so we aren't contributing to the obesity epidemic with our gluttony!

AlmightyBob · 23/02/2021 10:27

oh yes, and potato pizza! I went through a stage of making that. Very thinly sliced new potatoes with rosemary, drizzle of olive oil. My happy place - thanks for reminding me by starting this thread, OP
