Aibu to think that serving potatoes at all with salmon en croute is just unnecessary carbohydrates

Further to the thread on boiled potatoes, from what I could glean not one person pointed out that you are serving carbohydrates with what should be already an ample portion of carbohydrates in the pastry. We have salmon en croute with extra green veg to fill everyone up. Is it just me or do people not get what a healthy portion (especially carbohydrates) actually is? Don't get me started on garlic bread being served with pasta.......🤬

My grandparents generation grew up eating pastry pies served with a portion of potatoes and other similar "double carb" combinations. Looking back at old photos they were rarely overweight and had a much healthier attitude towards eating than many today (mainly large meals three times a day and no snacks).
I do eat pasta with garlic bread occasionally, I know it's unnecessary carbs but it tastes delicious and whilst eating should be about nutrition, it's also about pleasure. There needs to be a balance.

I'll just leave this here.

OP YABU. Salmon en croute with potatoes is just posh pie and chips isn't it? Surely you know that pie and chips is a normal meal?

Don’t come to Glasgow. You might die of apoplexy when you see someone eating a pizza crunch supper! (Pizza coated in batter, deep friend and served with chips).

I always ponder this when my dc's have it. DS is a growing teen though so he gets double carbs. Sometimes with bread on the side.

Nothing wrong with pie and mash, and salmon en croute with potato is just a variation on the theme.

Probably a bit heavy for those who dine only on the memory of a cucumber though.

Not that bothered about the healthy portions, but I agrees about double carbs. Dont understand it. They don't go together. Add to your macaroni with chips AND garlic bread Confused, why?

Depends on how many you’re feeding. Plus potatoes and greens could make a potentially expensive meal go further and feed more people.

Depends how much of a gluttonous pig you’re being with the pastry OP. There really shouldn’t be so much pastry on a slice of salmon en croute that a few potatoes are a problem. Just go easy on the pastry eh?

I love competitive under-eaters, they’re such good value. My mother-in-law is one of the best - she takes single chocolates out of boxes and makes a big performance of asking people if they’d like to halve it with her as she ‘can’t manage a whole one’. Her table manners are embarrassing - she makes a big show of cutting everything in half (because she must show everyone how little she eats) and then she leaves an unappetising mangled half (that she’s handled) for someone else to have.

Mmmm garlic bread. Goes with everything. Garlic bread with cheese on top, dripping with grease....yummy.

Little ones birthday on Friday we are having home made pizza as a treat (get me with the home made!) - I'm going to elevate it to the next level by cooking sweet potato fries and garlic bread too!!! All thanks to this thread.

(If I served my OH salmon en croute with no carbs I could imagine his MN post "I think my wife is trying to starve me....last night she served an inch if salmon and some green veg" "oh hun, you are so right - you need to get your ducks in a row and LTB" - b would be bitch of course. Grin

Sometimes I have TRIPLE carb if I get my favourite saag aloo, pilau rice and roti.

I once had that with onion bhajis- which are gram flour but still...

QUAD CARBS.

(I’m a mildly overweight side 14)

Put potatoes in a separate dish so anyone who wants them can have them.

Pie and chips
Pie and mash
Lasagne and chips/garlic bread
Any pasta and garlic bread

Hope you enjoy your virtuous extra green veg...😴

The Scottish staple of macaroni cheese pie..... Its macaroni cheese in a pie case sounds weird actually amazing!

For real carb overload it's a macaroni cheese pie softie - the pie in a large bun usually around midnight after the pub!

There is no such thing as 'unnecessarily carbohydrates'............those words shouldn't even exist.

Sums it up nicely methinks.

Well surely you'd be better having plain salmon with boiled potatoes rather than a rich sauce and greasy pastry if we are thinking from a health point of view? Salmon en croute is needlessly fattening don't you know? I assume if there's no priorities you'd need a bigger portion of the en croute to fill you up - so it's a variety of carb to make the meal more interesting rather than double. Same with pasta, without the addition of garlic bread you'd eat more pasta. I prefer variety to big lumps of sameness!

Faux shock at someone eating pie and mash has made me feel quite protective of the humble accompany spud. Go and get some real shocks somewhere, live a bit.

It's not because of double carb.
It's because of parge portions in general. I got fat on salads 🤷🏻
