Aibu to think that serving potatoes at all with salmon en croute is just unnecessary carbohydrates

Further to the thread on boiled potatoes, from what I could glean not one person pointed out that you are serving carbohydrates with what should be already an ample portion of carbohydrates in the pastry. We have salmon en croute with extra green veg to fill everyone up. Is it just me or do people not get what a healthy portion (especially carbohydrates) actually is? Don't get me started on garlic bread being served with pasta.......🤬

Wait. There's a thread about boiled potatoes. Can someone share it.

misses point

As for the OP, sometimes, double carbs are great, and salmon en croute with jersey royals are a perfect match. (Ditto lasagne and chips in a cafe).

MaudTheInvincible · 23/02/2021 12:11

I like salmon en croute. I like it with buttered new potatoes and greens. Leaving out the potatoes and only serving it with greens in order to be 'healthy' is something my MIL would do, but then she also eats 4653 snacks per day is on a constant diet.

Yellowhighheels · 23/02/2021 12:11

Are you honestly trying to tell me that you don't have dough balls with pizza express pizzas?

Who knew Prince Andrew was a Mumsnetter?

iwasmadeinthe1980s · 23/02/2021 12:11

@2021WillBeMyBitch

What about garlic bread being served with lasagne AND chips?

Yum 😋

My favourite!

Normal healthy weight BTW, just don't eat like this all of the time. Everything in moderation, hey.

But you can't beat a lovely sloppy lasagne, with seasoned chips and garlic bread to dip in the cheesey tomatoey saucy goodness. Mmmmmm. Token handful of salad on the side too, of course.

Sportsnight · 23/02/2021 12:12

Ooh this is making me want a chip butty

The nicest thing about the flaky pastry of the croute is when you eat it with creamy mash.

Alcohol, smoking, sedentary life styles, poor quality food and poverty also lead to poor health and demands on the nhs. Potatoes with your salmon en croute is not the issue.

Inequality is a bigger problem than carb based side dishes and will ultimately cost more but it's easier to judge someone's boiled potatoes than address that.

MysweetAudrina · 23/02/2021 12:15

Surely the en croute is more unnecessary than the potatoes. Potatoes would seem to be a more nutritious option to pastry?

shinynewapple21 · 23/02/2021 12:16

@SchrodingersImmigrant

And aren't things like aloo curry also traditionally served with a second carb? Or even third🙈

Or a 4th? Rice, chips and naan bread on the side

iwasmadeinthe1980s · 23/02/2021 12:17

@Karmakarmachameleon

Depends how much of a gluttonous pig you’re being with the pastry OP. There really shouldn’t be so much pastry on a slice of salmon en croute that a few potatoes are a problem. Just go easy on the pastry eh?

I love competitive under-eaters, they’re such good value. My mother-in-law is one of the best - she takes single chocolates out of boxes and makes a big performance of asking people if they’d like to halve it with her as she ‘can’t manage a whole one’. Her table manners are embarrassing - she makes a big show of cutting everything in half (because she must show everyone how little she eats) and then she leaves an unappetising mangled half (that she’s handled) for someone else to have.

My mum does this with any sort of chocolate bar, like a standard sized Wispa or a biscuit or something.

"Oh I couldn't possibly eat the whole thing like you greedy bastards who wants half?"

She forgets that I lived with her for 23 years, and I know exactly what her diet is like. There is a reason she's been obese all of my life and it is not because she can only eat half a wispa 🙄

SilverGlassHare · 23/02/2021 12:17

We regularly have pasta AND garlic bread or pizza AND garlic bread. We just have less of both than we'd have if we were eating pizza/pasta without the garlic bread. We don't eat twice as much!

And what on earth would you eat garlic bread with if not pasta/pizza?!

Glittertwins · 23/02/2021 12:18

Haha, we had salmon en croute at the weekend with new potatoes rolled in homemade garlic butter. The amount of pastry is quite small in comparison to the potatoes so I'd hardly say it's double carbs. Anyway, the DCs are not on any form of dietary restrictions so it's hardly an issue

PurpleDaisies · 23/02/2021 12:19

We regularly have garlic bread with chilli and rice or shepherd’s pie. Two fine examples of double carbing.

Viviennemary · 23/02/2021 12:19

You have what you want. Forget the pastry and just have salmon with creamy mash.

Autumn101 · 23/02/2021 12:19

When we were students there was a takeaway that did chip naans at 2am - a massive naan rolled up stuffed full of salty chips and either chilli sauce or a minty yoghurt sauce. They were amazing and 20 years later I still think about them and how much I want one.......

ancientgran · 23/02/2021 12:20

@MaryIsA

When I have lasagne , I also have a baked potato, salad and garlic bread

Anyone else remember PizzaLand ? My favourite order that I thought was really sophisticated in the late 80s was 1/2 pizza, salad bar, jacket potato and garlic bread. It was their early evening special.

I loved that, it was my favourite order as well.
CoffeeBerry · 23/02/2021 12:22

It's nice with chilli and rice as well

Chunkymenrock · 23/02/2021 12:22

Gosh I'm hungry now reading this thread. Yum!

oldwhyno · 23/02/2021 12:24

OP: "I'm a front-line health care professional"....

So not a nurse or a doctor then?

Judgmental receptionist?

loverley · 23/02/2021 12:25

My South African friends all serve rice with Shepherds pie. Now that I find weird.

ancientgran · 23/02/2021 12:25

Made me hungry, just made pancakes and covered them with syrup so I think I'll survive.

Grandmaschickensalad · 23/02/2021 12:26

If I go to Nando’s I’ll have a chicken burger (hot FYI), peri peri chips and a side of mashed potato.

How do you feel about this OP?

Really regretting my choice of soup for lunch right now Sad

LApprentiSorcier · 23/02/2021 12:26

Have you thought of having some rice with it as well, and perhaps a slice of garlic bread? Wink
