Aibu to think that serving potatoes at all with salmon en croute is just unnecessary carbohydrates

Further to the thread on boiled potatoes, from what I could glean not one person pointed out that you are serving carbohydrates with what should be already an ample portion of carbohydrates in the pastry. We have salmon en croute with extra green veg to fill everyone up. Is it just me or do people not get what a healthy portion (especially carbohydrates) actually is? Don't get me started on garlic bread being served with pasta.......🤬

I seriously doubt that the NHS will be saved by people deciding not to have potatoes with salmon en croute.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 23/02/2021 11:45

You have to have garlic bread with pasta surely 😱

PattyPan · 23/02/2021 11:46

@PurpleDaisies

But even then wouldn't a extra portion of veg be better for you?

Life’s not all about eating only what’s better for you at every meal. You have to enjoy what you’re eating too.

I don’t have a problem with double carbs but this made me go Hmm Vegetables are bloody delicious and enjoyable to eat!
LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 23/02/2021 11:46

I've realised though that I do eat (and adore) sausages-en-croute, aka the humble and delicious sausage roll. I'd like one (or ten) right now. Grin

OP. were you trying to be 'amusing', perhaps? I'm trying to give you the benefit of the doubt rather than just assuming that you're just a garden-variety boring, goady fucker.

Blockedoff · 23/02/2021 11:46

Are you honestly trying to tell me that you don't have dough balls with pizza express pizzas? 😳

EternalOptimist7 · 23/02/2021 11:47

I would only have a few potatoes with salmon en croute because the pastry is filling. Definitely have garlic bread with a pasta dish or pizza!

Champagneandmonstermunch · 23/02/2021 11:47

Yep, think you've solved the obesity crisis. We all just need to stop eating potato's with our salmon em croute. 😀

Choppingandchanging · 23/02/2021 11:47

Surely OP if you are so concerned for the health of our nation, you should be fretting about the pastry rather than the potatoes? Plenty of nutrients in potatoes, vitamins, minerals and fibre. Whereas pastry.... And as for the calories, there are 371 in 100g of puff pastry, and 71 in the same amount of potatoes. Bearing this in mind, I'd say this is just a judgmental OP dressed up as fake concern for people's health.

partyatthepalace · 23/02/2021 11:47

🥱 lockdown boredom setting in huh?

Go for a run (that way you can have your croute and eat it Grin)

Okbussitout · 23/02/2021 11:47

It's so sad that you're a health care professional. Sounds like you just wanted to start a thread where you get to complain about people being fat because they eat too many carbs.

PurpleDaisies · 23/02/2021 11:47

I don’t have a problem with double carbs but this made me go Hmm Vegetables are bloody delicious and enjoyable to eat!

Where did I say vegetable aren’t delicious? I love them. I also love chips. You’ve leapt to a really odd conclusion about what I was saying in my post there.

Tubs11 · 23/02/2021 11:47

unnecessary but tasty

Lasagna, chips or potato salad and garlic bread is the best!

RunningFromInsanity · 23/02/2021 11:48

Garlic bread isn’t a carb, it’s a treat.

Doesn’t count.

PurpleDaisies · 23/02/2021 11:48

@Blockedoff

Are you honestly trying to tell me that you don't have dough balls with pizza express pizzas? 😳
That doesn’t count because you have dough balls as a starter.
SchrodingersImmigrant · 23/02/2021 11:48

Shouldn't NHS be saving people not asking people to save it all the time? Never had health system where my family lives asking to be saved. "Try to be mindful not to overwhelm" was the most they got😐
NHS is not a person. It's not some adorable charity. It's a state funded healthcare system like in many other countries. If it needs saving it must go after government not guilt tripping people.
(However, obviously I agree that these levels of obesity, myself included are not good)

BlooperReel · 23/02/2021 11:49

*BlooperReel

Don't go to an east end pie and mash shop OP, pie and double mash would give you a seizure.

Double mash?! Is that a double portion or is there some other kind of mash available?*

Double portion Grin

MaryIsA · 23/02/2021 11:49

When I have lasagne , I also have a baked potato, salad and garlic bread

Anyone else remember PizzaLand ? My favourite order that I thought was really sophisticated in the late 80s was 1/2 pizza, salad bar, jacket potato and garlic bread. It was their early evening special.

Gemma2019 · 23/02/2021 11:49

All I know is that OPs on this site do not know how to accompany salmon en croute properly.

Whatagayday · 23/02/2021 11:51

It's effectively a quiche crust full of potatoes with a pint smear of cream and is bloody delicious!

Interesting, sounds like an open top pastie!

TrialOfStyle · 23/02/2021 11:52

How often are people eating Salmon en croute for to even be a problem? Shock

Onedropbeat · 23/02/2021 11:53

I have sometimes Yorkshire’s AND stuffing with my roast dinner alongside potatoes Shock

Haveyouallgonequitemad · 23/02/2021 11:53

@Gemma2019 pffffft rahhhhhh blablabla rah rah

biddybird · 23/02/2021 12:04

For most people carbs aren't necessary at all for a healthy diet. Most of us just eat them for enjoyment!
So YABU to eat salmon en croute.

FedUpWithItAllWeep · 23/02/2021 12:05

I find it odd that a health care professional would blame the obesity crisis on simply eating double carbs. It is quite obviously more complex than that. Double carbs, cake, chocolate, crisps (even salmon en croute which even without the extra potatoes is not exactly a lean meal, why not just have salmon if your so worried about carbs) can all form part of a healthy balanced diet. The issue comes when these things are eaten all the time, everyday. So demonising double carbs with no context is utterly ridiculous!

LondonJax · 23/02/2021 12:08

Pie and mash
Fish and Chips
roast beef with yorkshire puds and roast potatoes
burger in a bun with chips

Some things just go together, double carbs or not.

Are you seriously saying, if you go to a chip shop, you'd just have a piece of cod with no chips or you'd be happy that a restaurant gave you roast beef without yorkshires and roast potatoes. Maybe you don't eat such things, which is fine, but what's the problem with others enjoying them once in a while?
