May contain accidental spoilers
Has anyone else watched this? I feel robbed of the six hours of my life that I committed to this. What started off with a lot of promise just turned into utter wank. Big thumbs down from me, Netflix.

I just finished it tonight. I really enjoyed it up
to the last 3 episodes and it turned utter shite with the astral projection bollocks and weird and unbelievable pre- twists and further twists.
Shame as it had so much potential

Llareggub · 22/02/2021 23:19

The plot was basically the same as a Lois Duncan book called “Stranger with my Face.” I’m in my 40s now and read it as a teen. Just a guess but I think the author might have too.

harper30 · 22/02/2021 23:20

YABU I really enjoyed it, something a bit different!

Lushers · 22/02/2021 23:20

Ps I'm so glad I never read the book, it's up there with BA Paris's shite fest book - Behind closed doors...

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 22/02/2021 23:27

I had read the book back in 2017 (I checked back my Kindle orders to see) and remember it being implausible, but had forgotten just how much so until I watched Netflix.

“Adele” is Bono’s daughter. Louise was so beautiful.

@Llareggub I became obsessed with astral projection after reading that book! I think I was a bit younger, late primary school, and my friend and I were really into both that, and the idea of poltergeists. We used to keep notebooks where we recorded “suspicious activity”, which we kept hidden from our parents as they were top secret.

Toffeesprinkles · 22/02/2021 23:30

I've just finished the series and I mostly enjoyed it but did feel dissatisfied by the ending. I like a good twist but I also prefer the hero/heroine to "win" at the end and that didn't happen. I just felt really sad for her son :(

Grenlei · 22/02/2021 23:31

I disagree, I thought it was rather good. And made you look at the Adele/ David interactions in earlier episodes in a slightly different way. Also explained why Adele had become so odd since the flashback scenes when she seemed much happier. And her godawful clothes!

The weak point I felt was Louise projecting into the house...why would she do that? She had to of course as a plot device. But there didn't seem to be any other reason. It's not like she'd experienced her projected self being able to interact with anyone (might have made more sense if she had).

GlamOfRags · 22/02/2021 23:37

I'm watching it right now and loving it.

grapewine · 22/02/2021 23:39

@InescapableDeath

You see I love fantasy/SF but to me absolutely fucking magical bollocks does not belong in contemporary suspense thrillers that appears to be set in the real world.

Watched one ep. Wondered why a show with no hook was on tv and getting viewers. Looked up the ending. Now won’t be watching any more!

This is exactly how I feel.
WilsonMilson · 22/02/2021 23:42

Utter tripe. Enjoyed the first few episodes, but felt utterly cheated when it went into paranormal nonsense. It could have been so good, felt annoyed at the end.

Isawthathaggis · 22/02/2021 23:51

Ten odd years ago I was married where they filmed the house she grew up and her parents died in. The burnt bit of the house is superimposed.

I was married in the room where they ate a lavish dinner, and I think the kitchen and bath scenes are from a servants flat you can hire by the night Grin.

For that alone I think it’s brill!

I wonder if where the asylum scenes are filmed? A quick google doesn’t help. Is it Strathblane?

ChristOnAPeloton · 22/02/2021 23:55

I’m still angry I wasted time and money reading the book- and it was only a quid from the chazza.

Sittingonabench · 23/02/2021 00:05

We just watched it. I didn’t hate it but yes it did bring in a quite ridiculous ‘woo’ element which kind of derailed the intrigue which had been good. I quite like a bit of ‘woo’ distraction but it kind of didn’t satisfy that either. I can see why you were disappointed

Deadringer · 23/02/2021 00:22

I am not remotely woo but i enjoyed it. The main guy David is very easy on the eye so that helped. Poor Adam, i was hoping Louise would dump him with his dad.

JesusAteMyHamster · 23/02/2021 00:24

They could have had the same effect with hidden cameras and the woman stealing the other woman's identity and her kid or something.

The ending of this was crap.

So I guess top marks to Netflix for staying 100% true to the book then (it does the exact same thing)

Yes, because for the mystery to work it has to fit within the "rules" of the world it is set in. The same as if an Agatha Christy closed-door type mystery was solved by "and then the killer magicked himself into the room, committed the murder and then magicked himself out again. Because he was magic." You think "well, what was the point of the whole mystery set up then???"
2020iscancelled · 23/02/2021 01:00

The twist is just evil for a start, it gave me sodding nightmares.

I haven’t read the book, only the Netflix thing. I wonder in the book if they make of the dreaming theme - it seemed glossed over in the series somewhat until it suddenly became pivotal to the plot in the last episode and a half. I definitely think they needed to make a bit more of that area, it was like oh yeah we all have bad dreams no big deal to suddenly.. out of body experiences

I dunno, it’s not my genre, there was some good acting from Louise but hated the end

Hillfarmer · 23/02/2021 01:06

Yup, that’s six hours of my life I won’t get back.

I carried on doggedly watching long after it had got dead boring, because I had been promised this amazing twist...and it was total crap. It wasn’t a plot twist, it was a deus ex machina.

So yeah, Oh great, not an actual plot turn that clunks satisfyingly into place, but a complete loony-tunes away-with-the-fairies nonsense. It felt lazy as well as crap. Really, really annoying!

Sapho47 · 23/02/2021 01:07

Whats the twist ?

Beseigedbykillersquirrels · 23/02/2021 07:05

Absolutely right. It had the potential to be really creepy. Instead it was absurd. At one point I said to my husband that the ending had better not just be 'and then I woke up and it was all a dream'. I think that would have been preferable now though.

dayswithaY · 23/02/2021 07:45

Netflix have lost the plot lately, excuse the pun. They seem to be going for quantity and definitely not quality, just piles of over hyped rubbish that that try to whip up a media frenzy over then they just disappear.

See also - The Cecil Hotel, hours of going round the houses and interviewing members of the public on their personal point of view.

LongPauseNoAnswer · 23/02/2021 07:47

I really liked it. What a refreshing twist, so different from the usual just a psycho plot line.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 23/02/2021 07:50

I felt the same when I read the book. Enjoyed it all the way through then the end ruined it.

Aprilx · 23/02/2021 08:10

We watched it at the weekend. It starts off well. There was no twist at the end, it was just a nonsensical ending. The ending was so bad it made me resent having wasted my time on such a weak plot. And I do like paranormal but it still has to be done well. This wasn’t.
