To be annoyed my husband doesn’t want to buy gloves for our baby?

My husband is doesn’t want to buy new winter gloves for our baby. He doesn’t think that they’re worth it as she won’t get much wear out of them before winter is over. He wants her to wear a few pairs of socks on her hands instead or buy a used pair. AIBU to think he is being too stingy?
@Same4Walls thing is DS has a similar love but he was just less bloody heavy handed 🤣 so T2 has destroyed in weeks books DS had for years but I wonder if it was cos DS was less mobile at the rough age (14 months)
As a book lover it makes me wince but that's how babies are meant to explore them so I try to bite my tongue.

Feel free to send your DS over though, maybe he could teach mine that crawling to me to read a story and dragging books along behind him or carrying them in his mouth probably isn't the best of ideas. Grin

HitchFlix · 22/02/2021 14:08

£15 is daft on baby gloves as they most certainly will get lost but do buy her some. Get a multipack of mittens in primark/your equivalent for a few pounds.

SleepingStandingUp · 22/02/2021 14:09

DS loves babies so would happily but he's currently employed to entertain my two and Jas thus far failed to teach them to walk OR talkm. He's only good for giggles, cuddles and fetching nappies 🤣

If your buying because your bored can you find something else to do to occupy that time? Download the kindle app and read or something?

I was just going to suggest this. I used to read an adult book (I don't mean porn, just a book for me not for dc) while they were sleeping on me, etc - read it aloud if they need soothing. Babies don't care what the actual words are, they just like hearing your voice, and you get to do something for yourself that's actually relaxing and enjoyable rather than spending money on stuff you don't need.
Peridotty · 22/02/2021 14:51

@funnyday and @sirzy. For some reason I find buying books for myself to be a waste cos I’m not going to be reading them over and over! For baby books, we could read them for years so I thought it would be worth it. But you’re right I need to do something more constructive with my time other than window shopping on my phone!

Some of the books are for older toddlers like The Gruffalo for instance so I thought it would be nice if I can stop her from touching them and making them all messed up so that when she was older they would still look new.

I feel kind of bad now for my very sensible DH! I will try the socks method.

Your not going to read 80 books over and over again though!

You could always see if your local library are linked to something like borrow box which works like a library.

FrankButchersDickieBow · 22/02/2021 14:57

I think he is being stingy, but LOL at frostbite.

Carouselfish · 22/02/2021 14:58

Most sleepsuits and pram suit have fold over hands.

Badabingbadabum · 22/02/2021 14:59

Socks work really well as mittens! Even if you get gloves that attach to coats with a clip or cord they still get lost. Losing one of a pair of £15 baby gloves on a walk would be really annoying

Illberidingshotgun · 22/02/2021 15:02

Unless money is no object, £15 does seem an awful lot for a baby, who will lose them or refuse to wear them anyway. Tights are a great substitute - an arm in each leg under her coat - she won't get those off, and they will help to keep her warm.

Peridotty · 22/02/2021 15:08

I’m living in Boston now where it’s still below freezing. It’s usually between -1 and 1C during the day so it’s still pretty cold. However spring is around the corner. We tried the H&M mittens going on before the coat but her arms get stuck inside the coat because the sleeves are too narrow! Thinking of chopping the thumbs off to make them easier to pull on. When she lost the scratch mitten I had to retrace my steps to find it! I would hate for her to lose a £15 glove lol. Didn’t know babies lose gloves that easily.
I was considering a pair like this:

I have been using the ones that come fitted into snowsuits/pramsuits for my baby as even at her age she manages to get them off - same as shoes! - and I am fed up of keeping a constant eagle eye while walking for them!

I do agree that that is a lot of money for gloves particularly when won't be in them for long.

Matalan do lovely things which are a brilliant price if you really do want gloves/mittens.

However, I would recommend you don't look at other things on it as it is so tempting to look at the other items and due to the price add it to basket and then it ends up quite a bit!

I do understand the spending a lot on your little one as I did the same but honestly I would try and cut down.

I bought a lot of the touch and feel "That's Not My" range when they were on offer and they're still a favourite and lasted well but others didn't fare so well! But even I would say that what you have is an excessive amount. I don't mean to be unkind!

I also agree with a kindle! Kindle Unlimited is really good particularly just now and for 7.99 a month you can choose from lots - including kids books! - and you also have daily offers for 99p and monthly offers at the same price.

That might help you with regards to the spending as if you do it is 99p here and there.

I have also been spending during lockdown but have found concentrating on kindle and the 99p deals for books I like has helped massively

Peridotty · 22/02/2021 15:09

@Illberidingshotgun tights for gloves hahaha. I can’t imagine it though!!

Just saw your last post! What about some knitted mittens/gloves?

nevernotstruggling · 22/02/2021 15:11

Being told I can't would really piss me off. Not sure I would enjoy the looks in shops of the sock handed baby...

diamondpony80 · 22/02/2021 15:13

Pointless buy definitely, especially at this time of year. I can't imagine asking my husband for permission to spend £15 though - if there was something I wanted for one of the kids I'd just go and buy it.

Peridotty · 22/02/2021 15:13

@DinosaurDigestive she already has knitted mittens!! They are just a nightmare to put on. Maybe bad design?? Attached a photo of the H and M ones. That’s why I wanted to get a new pair that were better designed for babies.

My DH complains of cold hands in his £1 gloves which was why I thought it was stingy he wouldn’t spend more on his baby.

Just think of it as a couple of coffees, a fifth of a haircut, or similar - it's something for your own wellbeing, which is worth the investment. Or buy secondhand - I often get books I want to read on ebay for £2, which is well worth the amount of enjoyment and relaxation I get from them.

Messyplayallday · 22/02/2021 15:19

If your in Boston then look at these us.reima.com/collections/toddlers-gloves

Get a bigger size like I do, they pull all the way up above the elbow. We’ve got a crazy winter where I am in the US and have zero regrets with these.

Look at Facebook marketplace, your local buy nothing group, and also craigslist for second hand baby and toddler winter gear.

LuaDipa · 22/02/2021 15:22

I think I’m in the minority here but I think it’s pretty tight fisted to object to a paid of gloves to keep your pfb’s little hands warm!!! I wouldn’t have dreamed of using socks, not that mine ever kept those on either!! I can’t believe you didn’t just laughingly tell him to shut up and buy them anyway. He does seem a bit controlling tbh.

Shrivelled · 22/02/2021 15:27

Buy some bigger ones that will last next winter as well and attach them to her coat (couple of stitches you can unpick when the weather is better). If babies get freezing hands they can get painful and cause babies to be grumpy. £15 for a happy child is totally worth the money in my opinion.

1forAll74 · 22/02/2021 15:28

My late Mum used to do a lot of knitting, and she used to use left over wool to knit little mittens for my two children when they were babies, and a bit older. She used to make a little tie on them and thread it in to the mittens, and hopefully not pulled off when they were beyond the baby stage.

I thought the OP meant Boston in Lincolnshire as she's spending in £££

If she's actually in a freezing US state it would have been useful to have mentioned that in the first post Grin
