To be annoyed my husband doesn’t want to buy gloves for our baby?

My husband is doesn’t want to buy new winter gloves for our baby. He doesn’t think that they’re worth it as she won’t get much wear out of them before winter is over. He wants her to wear a few pairs of socks on her hands instead or buy a used pair. AIBU to think he is being too stingy?

We have mittens from Next - £6 for three pairs so much better value than the ones you were looking at, you get spares for when you inevitably lose some, much easier to put on than the ones on her pram suit and quite a bit thicker than (so I suspect warmer than) socks.

Only problem is, if you're anything like me you'll then be tempted to buy a load more stuff to justify the delivery fee, which kind of cancels out the bargain price!

Greenmarmalade · 22/02/2021 13:29

In lockdown, 80 books is fine. If it makes OP’s life happier and she gets enjoyment reading them all with her baby- why not? Libraries are closed, remember. I would have got that number out of the library over the course of a year.

Justmuddlingalong · 22/02/2021 13:30

If you buy cheaper gloves then all 3 of you will be happy. Unless you're determined to waste £15 on baby gloves.

shouldistop · 22/02/2021 13:33

To the posters who thinks her partner is controlling her - do you think she'd have been able to buy even half of that stuff if he was?

People commented that he was controlling before op said she bought 80 board books!

80 books is obscene even in lockdown but buying 80 board books brand new is just madness. The baby wont ever look at all of them and it's inevitable that some will be chewed or damaged so why not buy the books secondhand?
Peridotty · 22/02/2021 13:35

Hmmm, food for thought. I never thought I had a spending habit before but thinking back to it, I have been buying a lot of new toys for her recently. I’m just stuck at home, on maternity leave, literally nothing to do here except walks and maybe go to the supermarket. I get really bored especially when I’m holding my baby for her naps so find myself online shopping (used stuff mostly).

@Same4Walls we try not to let baby bite them to keep them new as possible!

Shes 8 months old so of course they still look new give it a few months and you'll see how daft it is to think you can keep them from being chewed. Grin

diddl · 22/02/2021 13:42

It would make more (to me) if Op had bought herself 80 books for herself to read whilst holding her napping baby!

B33Fr33 · 22/02/2021 13:42

He's kind of right, specific gloves are pointless for children who aren't picking things up out and about.

But he's also wrong, every child should have appropriate clothes in every weather so how committed to this is he? How long term?
But mainly this is not a decision needing both parents. OK if you've spent the whole clothes budget a discussion might be needed, but specifically over gloves seems weird.

Yeah enjoy that whilst it lasts. T2 loves books. He'll climb anything to go and stroke of hug one 🤨 but he's also the oy baby who breaks them - general flapping around of board books - or rips them (any paper) or eats them (any paper).

Joeblack066 · 22/02/2021 13:48

Adults socks going up their arms- they stay on lol! £15 on babies’ gloves? Madness imo!

Singlenotsingle · 22/02/2021 13:48

Buy them yourself.

oblada · 22/02/2021 13:49

I agree with your DH. My youngest is just over 7m and hasn't really worn gloves at all. Her warmest onesie-coat thing comes with integrated mittens which is more than enough and otherwise she just hasn't worn gloves. If I don't put her warm onesie on and find that it is colder than anticipated I just tuck her hands towards me. Like you she is in the baby carrier so it's pretty straightforward. If I used a pram I guess a blanket would do. Or socks and a blanket :) no risk of frostbite unless you're in Canada or something? Or somewhere where it's really really cold.
15quids for baby mittens is also ridiculous.
However it is not ridiculous to spend the same amount for adult gloves - we recently did that and OMG they are sooo much better than our other ones, definitely made a

Also books are to be loved, not idolised. Who whilst I discourage the general eating and deliberate ripping of books, and they'd been locked in the cupboard (children not books) for writing in them, I do think it's one of those things that get a bit battered and worn because she should be exploring them in part on her own. Not with you hovering and telling her how to use it

Same4Walls · 22/02/2021 13:50

Is your T2 my DS. He's obsessed with books and therefore they inevitably get chewed, pawed through heavy handedly, bent backwards and generally thrown in the way a toddler does to discard something.

The only people I know who had pristine books left after the toddler years were those who had children who didn't enjoy looking through books so they were only handled when read by an adult.

MustardMitt · 22/02/2021 13:54

I would have said just buy them if they were like £2 from Asda.

£15 is ridiculous.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 22/02/2021 13:54

I put yanbu because it’s up to you! So long as you can afford it (usual MN caveat).

I know it does seem a bit sad to see baby without gloves when you have them on. But then again the do immediately come off! Your husbands idea re socks does sound sensible but then again I don’t think he should be able to ban you from getting them.

PlinkPlink · 22/02/2021 13:57

You are being a bit OTT.

She can cope with the gloves she has. Sew something in if you have to. Add some velcro... whatever.

£15 for a pair of baby gloves is silly when it will be spring very, very soon.

For an 8 month old?

I'm a massive book lover but that's a crazily unnecessary amount. The baby hasn't got a clue that the books are different Grin

@Peridotty you've confirmed my suspicion that you may have some kind of spending issues with the mention of branded gloves unless you're going to drip feed that you live at the top of Ben Nevis

BrumBoo · 22/02/2021 13:59

@Peridotty

Haha some people have been digging! Yes I bought 75 board books but actually I bought another 8 since that post lol. The mats and playpen are naturally expensive aren’t they though? I like to spend money on baby but not on myself.
No offence but it doesn't matter who you're spending on, this sounds ott. Babies don't need bloody NorthFace mittens or half a library of books! It's not about affordability either, it's a case of spending for the sake of it.

Over nearly 6 years we've bought a million books from The Works and similar and I regret most of them, as many have been chewed or ignored. Now my two have their favourites regardless so it was utterly pointless, they don't learn more from having more. As for gloves, after socks they're the most lost item of clothing in the world, it's an absolute waste of money and delivery to get the very best for anyone who cannot appreciate looking after them. That's why I never get myself anything but cheapo ones, not because I think kids should get treated more than me Grin.

randomsabreuse · 22/02/2021 14:00

Gloves are rubbish for young babies. We've done a lot of outdoorsy stuff in the snow with our 2 year old and the best "gloves" we found were some mittens from Decathlon (about £3 or so). Main trick is gloves go on before coats go on. Ideally the scratch mitts built in but if not socks or mittens before a coat are much more difficult to remove and fling away!

I definitely wouldn't pay £15 for kids' gloves because they lose them so often. About £6 is my limit until they keep them for more than 1 use!

SleepingStandingUp · 22/02/2021 14:01

@Same4Walls thing is DS has a similar love but he was just less bloody heavy handed 🤣 so T2 has destroyed in weeks books DS had for years but I wonder if it was cos DS was less mobile at the rough age (14 months)

WaltzingTilda · 22/02/2021 14:02

We get mittens from Next. I think £15 on gloves for a 8 month old is a bit too expensive.
