Do you think the English, if given a vote, would vote for independence from the rest of the UK?

Yabu - No they wouldn't
Yanbu - Yes they would

The break up of the UK seems high chance to me, maybe 60/40 to be voted for within the next ten years. They don't ever seem to ask the English what would you personally vote?

OP posts:
JaneJeffer · 15/02/2021 14:33

i would vote for England to be independent from Scotland Wales and Ireland.
Ireland is not part of the UK

NotFabulousDarling · 15/02/2021 14:34

The amount of people on this thread who think Ireland is part of the UK is serious craic. Good luck paying for things in GBP in the South or trying to get a job in Dublin with your national insurance number!
As for the North (Northern Ireland as it's also known), that's a very complicated situation and shouldn't be decided by hamfisted single-issue voters in England who are swayed by things written on buses (buses which were built in Northern Ireland).

Lovesgood · 15/02/2021 14:34

The English should take a very long, very hard look at themselves before saying anything negative about any other country!

Letshavesometea · 15/02/2021 14:34

Yes ridiculous comment about keeping Wales. But like a few others you seem to have misinterpreted the question and taken about who you would boot out as opposed to would you vote yes or no.

Also scottish people do not necessarily have the English, even if they are supporting independence. Thats not what its all about.

hipposeleven · 15/02/2021 14:38

I wouldn't vote for independence from Wales and Scotland, though I do think there should be a united Ireland. What I would like is more power to the English regions and parliament moved out of London.

Fatladyslim · 15/02/2021 14:38

I wouldn't vote to separate but I don't think it will be long until Scotland get another vote and when they do, I think they will vote to leave.

I wish them well no matter what they decide but will be sad to see the UK splitting up. I don't understand the anti-scottish/anti-welsh/anti-NI sentiments in general really.

AdultierAdult · 15/02/2021 14:41

Surprised at the poster above who thinks NI would rather leave UK, definitely not the sentiment I've come across here though lots of disappointment over Brexit and concern of the repercussions. My Irish family in ROI don't seem to think the Irish want NI back, either, for economic reasons. Just don't see how it could work. I grew up in England though and have limited understanding of the whole context.

SharonasCorona · 15/02/2021 14:42

I have actually met a few people who argued London should go for independence after Brexit. I don't think they were entirely joking.

Isn't Barcelona campaigning for independence from Spain? Maybe they are thinking similarly. I agree it's ridiculous.

MumW · 15/02/2021 14:44

I wouldn't vote for total independence but do think that we should have and some kind of English devolved parliament/assembly so we are in line with the rest of the UK.

TheGoogleMum · 15/02/2021 14:44

I wouldn't vote for independence but I wouldn't be surprised if the majority would!

luxxlisbon · 15/02/2021 14:45

Dying at the thought of England wanting independence FROM Northern Ireland? Grin

JaneJeffer · 15/02/2021 14:45

@AdultierAdult some people on here think it's just a matter of the British government saying 'here you go' and whoopee Ireland will be reunited and the "problem" solved.

I think a United Ireland is pretty much a dead cert within the next 20 years.
PussyCatInChristmasStockings · 15/02/2021 14:48

I want my tiny bit of Cheshire to be either in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland rather than controlled by the numpties in Westminster especially not the Covid Research Group who couldn't find their bum with two hands, a map and a compass

DioneTheDiabolist · 15/02/2021 14:49

Brexit and Covid have laid bare differences between England and the rest of the UK. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are seen negatively, when they're seen at all.Hmm I agree with @dreamingbohemian A propaganda campaign run like the Leave campaign would have a field day.

A UK comprising Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland would be interesting.Grin

PussyCatInChristmasStockings · 15/02/2021 14:49

@passtheorange

The English are not one homogenous mass, all inclined to think the same.

I view myself as British anyway.

Ah, see I think of myself as Cestrian first and European second.
Youseethethingis · 15/02/2021 14:51

*Lovesgood

Lol the English started all this taking over other countries BS and now they are whining about it!? Seriously!?*

The English start it did they, aye?
History must have dreamt the Egyptian empire, Alexander the Greats antics, the Romans etc etc. All kicking about centuries/millennia before the Angles even landed on this island to give England its name.

But ok then. Big bad England invented empires. 👍

noblegreenk · 15/02/2021 14:51

I personally wouldn't vote for it and consider myself British rather than English. However, if there was a vote it wouldn't surprise me if it swung in favour of independence.

AdultierAdult · 15/02/2021 14:52

That scares me Timpeall, because of what it would take to get there! What makes you say that? Do you think Brexit was a nail in the coffin?

I can see the arguments on both sides but hate the idea of conflict. My mum's family were very involved in original IRA in the south but I grew up in England and feel very on the periphery of it all and with woeful understanding. That is to say I have no strong feelings other than wanting the best for the population.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 15/02/2021 14:53

I would rather England have their own parliament like the Welsh and Scottish set up.

Even more interesting if it's joined by Cornwall and Brittany, which have their own separatist movements : )
Hammonds · 15/02/2021 14:54

No I wouldn’t and I don’t think most would tbh. Tbh I think most people are proud of Great Britain. I’d imagine most people see Wales and Scotland as an extension of England. Why would the vote to cut them off?

AlohaMolly · 15/02/2021 14:54

@NotFabulousDarling

This thread is so full of nasty racism. I can't believe that some people are so full of hatred. Yep. I lived in NI for the last 2 years and I lived in Scotland before there was a DH. The idea that England should now chuck all the other nations aside like a discarded takeaway wrapper smacks of those blokes who get women pregnant then leave and don't pay maintenance. England got what it wanted. It plundered these countries when it suited them back in the day and stunted their development centuries ago, not giving these places any choice, and making the other nations dependent on England. Now some idiot nationalists say the other nations "don't bring anything to the union" and that England should gets to leave?? Er, no mate. They have a duty of care. This didn't begin with "ooh, you're a country on this island and so am I, let's get together, every day will be a party!" It began with invasion and bloodshed. I'm still horrified that England has sidestepped their responsibility in a lot of the rest of the former commonwealth, I really think they (and other European "empire" nations) should be paying huge reparations to the countries they screwed over and profited off the backs of. Glad there are so many decent people in England who would never go for this England leaving nonsense.
I really enjoy this post. It’s not so long ago that the English insisted on the almost eradication of the Welsh language.

For the record, I’m English but live in Wales. There’s a rising WelshIndy sentiment and I completely understand it. I’m not sure logistically if it would work but I understand the feeling behind it.

There are still people in England that don’t understand Wales is another country. We routinely, for as long as I can remember, have tourists coming here and laughing/jeering at the local language. There are still people on MN that post the English lockdown rules as though they are the only ones that a) exist and b) matter.

If it was a straight up England or U.K. question, on the street tomorrow, I don’t think people in England would vote leave, purely because Wales/Scotland/NI even register on their radar.

Of course, if there was a dedicated anti union campaign run by Boris then yes, I’d say they’d vote leave.

ThatDamnKrampus · 15/02/2021 14:55

I would vote for it but only if I could then move into one of the neighbouring countries (preferably Scotland) that had succeeded in gaining independence!

BidensWingWoman · 15/02/2021 14:55

Isn't Barcelona campaigning for independence from Spain?

Not Barcelona, Catalonia. It's a region that includes Barcelona

That would be like saying Edinburgh wants independence.
