Do you think the English, if given a vote, would vote for independence from the rest of the UK?

Yabu - No they wouldn't
Yanbu - Yes they would

The break up of the UK seems high chance to me, maybe 60/40 to be voted for within the next ten years. They don't ever seem to ask the English what would you personally vote?

I also think, that of other countries want Independence, which I think they do, they should be given the choice.

Cloudsurfing · 15/02/2021 13:44

I don’t think I could vote either way at the moment. I don’t know enough about what Scotland and Wales bring to the UK.

TSSDNCOP · 15/02/2021 13:44

No I wouldn’t vote in such an election. Given the amount of time the other nations seem to spend speaking in favour I imagine it won’t be long before it happens though.

Cloudsurfing · 15/02/2021 13:45

I mean all I’ve heard about is how much money give to Scotland and Wales but never heard what they bring/give. Anyone else know?

HmmSureJan · 15/02/2021 13:46

@zigaziga

I wouldn’t vote for it, no.

I’d rather Scotland not leave the union but I wouldn’t be devastated about it.

No, me neither. They want to go, let them, then we can stop hearing all the moaning about it.
Timpeall · 15/02/2021 13:47

No I don't think the majority of English people would vote to leave the Union. I'm fairly confident however, that Scotland will have left the Union within the next decade.

LastTrainEast · 15/02/2021 13:49

I don't even think Scotland should leave. I think though that if we're going to have regional semi-independence then we need a federal government over all the regions including England to put us on the same footing.

This current setup seems unbalanced.

nocoolnamesleft · 15/02/2021 13:50

I'd vote for the union to remain. I guess I'm English, but I feel British. I have Irish, Welsh, Scottish and English blood. I'd rather like my country, the UK, to continue to exist.

peak2021 · 15/02/2021 13:50

It's hypothetical of course, but I think there would be support for this. I'd be saddened that it might be for negative reasons though, not the positive ones of the unique and separate culture that the other three nations in the United Kingdom have.

I've long been in favour of Scottish independence.

doctorhamster · 15/02/2021 13:53

As a Welsh person living in England I think it would be a dreadful idea.

VexedofVirginiaWater · 15/02/2021 13:54

@MillieEpple

I wouldnt vote for it but i think many would. I didnt think people would vote to leave the EU so i think i'm a rubbish guage for what other peoole do.
Same here - I was positive we wouldn't vote to leave the EU so what do I know?

I didn't want Scotland to leave when they had the referendum, but the day after they voted to stay I saw all the downhearted voters who had lost and felt so sorry for them.

I would be a rubbish politician. Sad

DinosaurDiana · 15/02/2021 13:55

No.

justanotherneighinparadise · 15/02/2021 13:55

I would be devastated personally.

I would agree with this. Devolution for England to get on par with the other UK countries.

So we should want you to stay because you're so great but all the while you want to leave? It has to be for unpleasant reasons if England voted for you to go? Far more likely that we are sick of the threats and moaning.
TakeTheCuntOutOfScunthorpe · 15/02/2021 13:58

I don't think they'd vote for English independence because there is no need for it. The English actually quite like their neighbours, they don't have the same hatred towards them that they receive in return. English dislike of the Welsh, Scottish or Northern Irish is usually limited to sporting rivalries or legitimate concerns (like the Scots genuinely seeming to believe Sturgeon is a reputable politician rather than a Trump-esque maniac).

Also given that the Scottish government seems hell-bent on breaking away and will keep demanding referendums until they get the result the people should want there's no point England leaving the Union. It will be much more fun having the whip hand over the breakup.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 15/02/2021 13:58

I wouldn't - but the different COVID laws and guidelines have driven a wedge, I think.

I would sympathise hugely with the Scottish, who voted so overwhelmingly Remain and now have the English millstone round their necks.

Goodness knows how the Irish issues will be resolved because a border in the Irish sea seems more workable than a hard border on the island . N Ireland was completely ignored during the run up to the referendum, despicable given the way the Gvt bribed the DUP.

It is a shame. It seems madness for a mosaic of small countries to manage alone economically, and the character of the UK and GB is as England, N Ireland, Scotland and Wales. (named alphabetically).

Laiste · 15/02/2021 13:59

The English will never be given a vote.

If they did ask us i believe it would be practically 50/50.

If i had to vote i'd vote to be independent.

Loving how some posters read, "would you (if English) vote to leave the UK?" as "would you (if English) vote to boot Wales and/or Scotland and/or NI out of the UK?"

BaileysforBreakfast · 15/02/2021 14:00

I think a lot of English people would vote for this, judging by comments on social media etc., where there seems to be a belief that they are 'propping up' the other nations.

The English are excellent at any kind of jingoism and have a misplaced sense of superiority IMO.

SharonasCorona · 15/02/2021 14:02

I think it would be a real shame.

I’m not sure about Notthern Ireland though, it’s great for us that it’s part of the UK&NI but it’s also sad to see Ireland divided.

Having said that, I’m of Asian descent, feel very much British but I wasn’t born in the UK (I’m from a country that went through partition) so my view may be coloured by that.

barretbonden · 15/02/2021 14:04

Well based on many of the nonsense on this thread alone, and on what certain parts "bring" to the UK, let's go one further and kick the North and West and East of England "out of the UK".

SE and S England plus London = UK.

Jesus wept. What a fucking state the world is in.

Independent from what? To do what?
Tamingofthehamster · 15/02/2021 14:08

Raining- it wasn’t so overwhelmingly to remain though. 60% of those voted , chose remain, which amount to 41% of the electorate. Yes it was clear cut, but not a landslide.
