Do you think the English, if given a vote, would vote for independence from the rest of the UK?

Yabu - No they wouldn't
Yanbu - Yes they would

The break up of the UK seems high chance to me, maybe 60/40 to be voted for within the next ten years. They don't ever seem to ask the English what would you personally vote?

@BidensWingWoman

Not Barcelona, Catalonia. It's a region that includes Barcelona

I know that, I've had a Catalan pen pal since the 90s Hmm. But it's usually Barcelona that is in a stalemate with Madrid.

cardibach · 15/02/2021 15:15

@Hammonds

No I wouldn’t and I don’t think most would tbh. Tbh I think most people are proud of Great Britain. I’d imagine most people see Wales and Scotland as an extension of England. Why would the vote to cut them off?
It’s the fact that most English people see Wales and Scotland as an extension of England which creates all the issues. They aren’t. And they wouldn’t be voting to cut anyone off. You are making the mistake a PP mentioned, and envisioning English independence as kicking other countries out. If England voted for independence the rest of us would still be united (assuming none of us have gone for independence as a result of the attitude that we don’t really exist).
Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 15/02/2021 15:16

Live in England, married to a Scot, DS1 at Uni in Wales.

Personally I think that breaking up Great Britain is a terrible idea. I believe we are too connected in terms of infrastructure etc. Also, without Scotland & Wales, England would become Tory for ever.

Perhaps that's what Boris and his ghastly cohorts are planning

In terms of the future of the United Kingdom though I can see strong arguments for a reunited Ireland.

LagunaBubbles · 15/02/2021 15:16

No but I must admit to being absolutely fed up with the whining scots.I would be quite happy if we cut them loose and didn't give them another penny

I'm Scottish, didn't realise I didn't pay tax? No wonder more and more people are wanting independence from attitudes like this.

Timpeall · 15/02/2021 15:16

@BidensWingWoman

BoJo equally keen, hence his trip to Scotland recently despite being in lockdown. And the bizarre notion that sending Prince Edward to live in Edinburgh will help strengthen the Union 🤔
It shows you how little the current govt understand Scotland if they think sending a Windsor up to sit in state is going to give people new enthusiasm for the union. I laughed when I read it!
Somanysocks · 15/02/2021 15:16

@CaravaggioLover

This thread is so full of nasty racism. I can't believe that some people are so full of hatred.
I agree, each nation brings so much to the UK, it's such a shame people can't be more tolerant. UK probably could do with some sort of shake-up though.
MyLittleOrangutan · 15/02/2021 15:16

Probably but it would be bloody stupid. I wouldn't , didn't want to leave EU either

ZoBo123 · 15/02/2021 15:16

I like the union but I do think England needs its own parliament like Scotland. I think we should be separated into regions as London is different from everywhere else

Saoirse7 · 15/02/2021 15:17

@Stripesnomore

We probably are stronger together, but there are more important qualities in a country than strength.
How though?

Westminster is completely controlled by English MPs. We haven't got a say. Look st Westminster if there are any issues about NI/Scotland/Wales being debated. No one cares.

MangoButterFingers · 15/02/2021 15:18

No, I wouldn't vote for it. I truly and strongly believe we are all better off together and fear for the wave of emotion that wants everything split into independent parts.

But the thing about unions is that everyone in it has to want to be (otherwise it's less a union and more a hostage taking Smile). So, if Scotland or Wales truly want out then they must get that chance and good luck to them.

cardibach · 15/02/2021 15:18

England voting out of the UK would be like leaving a party in your own home
You really don’t see this as union of equals, do you @Saoirse7? Which of course it isn’t, due to English attitudes and the way government is set up. It could be though, and without England probably would be. They could definitely leave.

31RooCambon · 15/02/2021 15:18

I think a lot of English people still think every other country is dragging them down.

BidensWingWoman · 15/02/2021 15:20

I know that, I've had a Catalan pen pal since the 90s hmm. But it's usually Barcelona that is in a stalemate with Madrid

Oh ok. It wasn't clear that you knew that from your post. It looked like you thought Barcelona wanted independence as a city, not that the politicians there wanted independence for the region

ChancesWhatChances · 15/02/2021 15:20

If England vote to leave the U.K., I think wales, N.I and Scotland would stay within the U.K. given its England that they want away from. Makes much more sense to give England the vote to leave than it does the other 3 countries, that way everyone is happy.

SharonasCorona · 15/02/2021 15:21

Sorry, I wasn't clear, Biden.

Hammonds · 15/02/2021 15:22

@31RooCambon

I think a lot of English people still think every other country is dragging them down.
No I don’t think they are. None of my friends or family have expressed anything like this.

I think people need to stay of SM and stop buying in to the agendas a very few people are pushing .

Stripesnomore · 15/02/2021 15:24

‘Westminster is completely controlled by English MPs. We haven't got a say. Look st Westminster if there are any issues about NI/Scotland/Wales being debated. No one cares.’

Well that is a good example then. Democratic representation is far more important than strength, and a good reason to dissolve the U.K.

Pbbananabagel · 15/02/2021 15:26

@NotFabulousDarling you’ve made every point I wanted to make. I think it’s very easy for people claiming the devolved nations are full of ‘racisim’ towards English people completely forget that our nations were invaded, economies forced to work towards an England/London centric model and our culture repressed- to the extent that it was actually illegal to use the welsh language until 1997..

LexMitior · 15/02/2021 15:27

I think the English would vote to split the Union. Look at some of the advantages it would have;

World leading universities, financial powerhouse in London, a form of law that is absolutely dominant in the corporate world, well connected, stable and independent banking. Good education systems and reasonable healthcare.

England built an empire - the effects (good and bad) are still here. I don’t think people should be scared of it. The other thing is that when your neighbours gave dominant national parties, you have got to accept it is an issue better planned for than one ignored.

bingoitsadingo · 15/02/2021 15:28

I would vote to remain united, because I am generally in favour of fewer borders, not more.

Overall though, I think whether the countries of the UK are united or not has much bigger implications for Wales, Scotland and NI than it does for England. So I don't really feel like I should have a say, it doesn't feel like it has a huge impact on me either way.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 15/02/2021 15:29

I thought Cornwall was keen to declare independence too?

Darkbrownistheriver · 15/02/2021 15:31

I wouldn’t. I’ve always though of myself as British even though I was born in England. I’ve got a British passport not an English one. I’m 60 and it’s only over the past ten years or so that I seem to have heard more about being English rather than British. Possibly it’s come about because the devolved nations have become more vocal about independence. I would be very sad to see a break up of the UK. My roots are Scottish though, perhaps I’d feel differently if they were English.

just saying

Both Yorkshire and Wessex have bigger populations than Wales Grin

But then, they could all collaborate on the big issues
on a cross border basis
a bit like

oh no, silly me

Stripesnomore · 15/02/2021 15:35

Yorkshire was asked if it wanted a regional assembly and voted against it. The different areas of Yorkshire don’t even have that much in common.
