Do you think the English, if given a vote, would vote for independence from the rest of the UK?

Yabu - No they wouldn't
Yanbu - Yes they would

The break up of the UK seems high chance to me, maybe 60/40 to be voted for within the next ten years. They don't ever seem to ask the English what would you personally vote?

@dreamingbohemian my jaw was already on the floor from @skysblue's post saying that "I would hate to lose Scotland or Wales, but I’d vote for independence from Northern Ireland, it causes so many problems for the rest of the UK ... and means we’re basically stuck with an open border with the EU which noone wants" before I even got to the post you've quoted. Gawdelpus.

CallistoSol · 15/02/2021 14:09

If the glory that is Brexit has taught us anything, it is that there is a deep and abiding undercurrent of racial hatred amongst the English towards absolutely every single other race. So yes, I think that the English would resoundingly vote to leave the rest of the UK, and then take great delight in trying to screw over Wales, Scotland and N Ireland as much as possible.

Laiste · 15/02/2021 14:09

The question was would the English vote to be independent.

It's a vague question - my vague feeling is yes if pushed to vote i would vote for England to be independent from Scotland Wales and Ireland.

NotFabulousDarling · 15/02/2021 14:10

They don't ask England because we never asked anyone else before invading them, subjugating them and forcing them to be part of our union. If England didn't want to be part of the UK, we could just liberate the other three nations instead of doggedly holding onto them.
Or everyone could just get along because the world needs more nationalist rhetoric like a hole in the head.

4amWitchingHour · 15/02/2021 14:11

I don't think the English in general would vote to be independent. I would, and then I'd move to Scotland or Wales Grin

CaravaggioLover · 15/02/2021 14:11

This thread is so full of nasty racism. I can't believe that some people are so full of hatred.

DoctorHildegardLanstrom · 15/02/2021 14:13

No I wouldn't

But the lines such as we are stronger together, no longer hold any water since we left the EU.

ItsJackieWeaverBitch · 15/02/2021 14:14

Welsh independence seems to be becoming more popular, Scotland seem to want to fuck off more and more and Northern Ireland probably wouldn’t mind seeing the back of the rest of us. Basically, I think the others will bugger off and leave England before England leaves any of us.

Laiste · 15/02/2021 14:15

Personally, as an English person, i feel hated generally Grin

passtheorange · 15/02/2021 14:16

The English are not one homogenous mass, all inclined to think the same.

I view myself as British anyway.

Moonmelodies · 15/02/2021 14:17

What next, Orkney independence? Yorkshire? Isle of Wight? Dyfed?

zafferana · 15/02/2021 14:20

I'd keep Wales, the other two are welcome to rejoin Ireland and become independent. I wonder who the SNP would blame then though, if they didn't have Westminster/the Tories to rail against?

dreamingbohemian · 15/02/2021 14:21

I agree @Ceara and I don't think these attitudes are that rare. A propaganda campaign run like the Leave campaign would have a field day.

BidensWingWoman · 15/02/2021 14:22

I would agree with this. Devolution for England to get on par with the other UK countries

Funniest thing I've read in a long time!

A) the vast majority of mps in Westminster are representing England so basically the votes go their way anyway

B) the mps for the devolved Nations are not able to vote on matters that are devolved

So for you to get par, you'd need a system where the votes of your mps are essentially meaningless on matters that aren't devolved 😂

orangenasturtium · 15/02/2021 14:23

London.

I have actually met a few people who argued London should go for independence after Brexit. I don't think they were entirely joking.

pursuedbyablackdog · 15/02/2021 14:24

No. It might not feel very united at the moment but I have friends and family scattered among the four kingdoms which make up this sceptre isle! And I think we're stronger together. Then again I wanted to remain in Europe 🤷‍♀️

AgnesNaismith · 15/02/2021 14:25

No way would I vote for that.

I do think Wales, Scotland and NI would rather be without England though. What can you do 🤷‍♀️

DeeCeeCherry · 15/02/2021 14:26

I think they might, and that other UK countries wouldn't be that bothered about it. As far as I can tell, people with "England matters, nowhere else does" mentality are pretty vocal, and will also get off their chair to vote as opposed to just chatting on forums and social media

CorianderBee · 15/02/2021 14:26

No, I like being United with one another, but if they voted to leave I'd be happy for them. I don't want an 'independent' England... but if Ireland, Scotland or Wales (or even Cornwall I suppose) wanted independence then I think they should have the right to take it.

Maybe then we could all get along a bit better tbh.

MoltenLasagne · 15/02/2021 14:27

God no, don't we have enough to do with the unpicking of Brexit? It doesn't bear thinking about working out what happens if Scotland voted to leave, how the hell would we disengage from Wales and N Ireland at the same time?

Tal45 · 15/02/2021 14:27

We'd have 350 million more for the NHS if we left them. Saw it on a bus.

NotFabulousDarling · 15/02/2021 14:28

Yep. I lived in NI for the last 2 years and I lived in Scotland before there was a DH. The idea that England should now chuck all the other nations aside like a discarded takeaway wrapper smacks of those blokes who get women pregnant then leave and don't pay maintenance.
England got what it wanted. It plundered these countries when it suited them back in the day and stunted their development centuries ago, not giving these places any choice, and making the other nations dependent on England. Now some idiot nationalists say the other nations "don't bring anything to the union" and that England should gets to leave?? Er, no mate. They have a duty of care.
This didn't begin with "ooh, you're a country on this island and so am I, let's get together, every day will be a party!" It began with invasion and bloodshed.
I'm still horrified that England has sidestepped their responsibility in a lot of the rest of the former commonwealth, I really think they (and other European "empire" nations) should be paying huge reparations to the countries they screwed over and profited off the backs of.
Glad there are so many decent people in England who would never go for this England leaving nonsense.

MoltenLasagne · 15/02/2021 14:30

Although reading this I think I'll start organising for the Yorkshire Independence Party next election, and possibly try to convince my Brummie families to start a "Bring Back Mercia" campaign too.

Helocariad · 15/02/2021 14:30

What do you mean you'd 'keep Wales'? Do you, as (presumably) an English person, consider Wales to be your possession? Confused Confused Confused
Lovesgood · 15/02/2021 14:32

Lol the English started all this taking over other countries BS and now they are whining about it!? Seriously!?
