Why do they do this? Ive seen two in the last 24 hours! Nothing remotely insulting, libellous or argumentative on them! It's like the only discussion with which they agree is allowed to take place! I personally think it spoils MN, they will probably remove this discussion pretty sharpish anyway!

@Berthatydfil

I was following the Tom thread - I assume it was a troll.
That's why it's helpful to comment on threads rather than just bookmark them, as then you can see the deletion message on Threads I'm On. I think they just disappear from Watched threads.

That said, I didn't comment on the Tom one so I don't know why it was deleted.

Hubblebubble75 · 13/02/2021 11:48

I was thinking of living in Australia so found that thread interesting! I think the troll ones are generally where there are other threads with completely different backgrounds/stories from the same op name changing. Beyond just changing small details to protect privacy

Sparklingbrook · 13/02/2021 11:49

Anyone remember ‘TSSDNCOP’ the answer to queries about how MNHQ know someone is a troll? Grin

AlternativePerspective · 13/02/2021 11:52

I usually post on threads if I’m sure they’re trolls so I can go back to them to see if they’re deleted.

I reported the Tom thread as IMO was suspicious from the get-go.

As for the Australia thread. I didn’t see it, but the last thread on here along those lines started to very much get into discussion about how the country was backward and racist and sexist, so if this one was heading the same way that could be why it went.

Hard2Find · 13/02/2021 11:56

@breadwidow you made a lot of points and the one about using driers was interesting. We use our dryer a fair bit due to the weather. Whilst it might be sunny in summer it can also be humid. I can’t count the number of times that I hanged clothes up to dry but even on a 35 degree day the clothes where still damp 24 hours later. When I lived in Melbourne we almost always hanged our clothes up to dry as the weather was a lot less humid.

What did you find suspicious about it?

AlternativePerspective · 13/02/2021 12:03

@ifitpleasesandsparkles well apart from the fact the story just sounded implausible,the timeline was all wrong. The OP went from wanting to go NC to suddenly realising that her DP was the problem to realising she was in an abusive relationship, sorting out a friend to help her make her escape, and then packing the car as Tom was on the doorstep. Driving to somewhere and then updating MN all the while on how and where she was at.

Her updates were happening too much in real time and with to much information.

Fozzleyplum · 13/02/2021 12:07

I was watching the "Tom" thread with half a mind on the fact that it could very easily be written up into a novel and was probably a troll. Am getting better at spotting the dodgy threads!

bigbird1969 · 13/02/2021 12:10

I can usually spot a troll thread, the tom one seemed totally far fetched and like a plot from a tv programme.

rawlikesushi · 13/02/2021 12:12

@aSofaNearYou

I always wonder how they decide a thread is a "troll", because usually it's on threads where there are loads of comments saying it must be a troll, but I get the impression it's probably a real person that just happens to have opinions people find "out there".

I'd be very interested to know how they decide something must be a troll.

I suppose they can see quite easily if it's a previously-banned poster - namechange history, IP address.

Sometimes they message the op and ask if the situation is genuine and they admit that it isn't.

LittleBearPad · 13/02/2021 12:13

@PegasusReturns

It’s the ones where the thread doesn’t go the OPs way and is then deleted because the OP has “privacy concerns” despite the only identifying features being that she’s a woman who had an argument with her sil as if this is not something that happens a million times a week.
Those are so annoying!

The obviously troll ones can be funny. It’s a shame when they go pfff

Damn. It was such an enjoyable thread. Everyone was rooting for her.

savethewales · 13/02/2021 12:19

@Lolly34h

The one about partners friend Tom has also disappeared Hmm
I’ve been searching for this!
DobbyTheHouseElk · 13/02/2021 12:20

Is the one where the missing DH is a “spook” still up?

billy1966 · 13/02/2021 12:21

I came on hoping she had a good night. Do you know what happened, it's unclear why it was taken down.

Does that message mean they think it was a troll?

Would appreciate it explained 🤷🏻‍♀️🙏

AlternativePerspective · 13/02/2021 12:23

@ ifitpleasesandsparkles tbh that is a huge part of why these trolls often post. They get so much positive encouragement for doing so, posters willing them on, telling them how wonderful and inspirational and strong they are, etc etc etc and so while they have an audience they have a valid reason to keep posting.

Aprilx · 13/02/2021 12:24

I have lived in Australia and am a citizen and posted on that thread. I noticed somebody said “I wonder when this will be deleted” and lo and behold.

The message from MNHQ is that something didn’t look right with the OP, maybe so, but the rest of the posts were interesting.

AlternativePerspective · 13/02/2021 12:24

@ billy1966 tbh I think that “we’re taking this down before anyone else takes the time to reply “ after having pointed out they had some concerns says everything.

I hate Mumsnet's cryptic messages when they take a thread down though. Just say "turns out this poster was making shit up."

Would you think of giving poster's some tips...🙏🤣

I'm obviously ditsy as it wouldn't occur to me that people spend time doing this.

I was so pleased when the OP left Tom and her ex to their love nest🙄
So bizarre.

Luckingfovely · 13/02/2021 12:26

I was so invested in the Tom thread. Horrible to think it was a troll.

So "concerns" means trolls...oh ok. Thank you..

Ffs..people are so sad🙄

WingingItSince1973 · 13/02/2021 12:30

Regards to the Tom thread. I was starting to think this is someone fishing for book ideas. Was way too quick and easy in the end and so many things fell into her lap etc. Hope if its real the OP will come back to say but on the other hand quite glad if its not as it was very very weird

Hubblebubble75 · 13/02/2021 12:31

I started a whole thread on here asking why trolls make up threads. I got told I was over invested and gullible and all sorts! None of it very nice. I happen to think it’s really strange to make up a thread !

lljkk · 13/02/2021 12:34

Maybe MN should have a 'fantasy' or 'windup' section. Let OPs run riot with crazy situations they pretend are real and they need advice for, until thread ascends to pandemonium. But the point is, we would all know it was farce & mostly lies from the start, so anyone getting offended would be in a right conundrum. "How can you make up such offensive crap?" Well, how can you be offended by utter fantasy! etc.
