Because I refuse to believe that those appalling men would have spoken to another man the way they attempted to shout her down. She handled herself so beautifully.

Frankly I think she deserves to be Dame Jackie Weaver for services to common sense!

She was amazing!

Skysblue · 08/02/2021 18:20

...often unfilled councillor slots. Usually the parish councillors are those with most time to fill. Some have a real sense of community spirit and work hard but many are there for the ego trip / to make a fuss and get some attention.

The way they spoke to Jackie is not unusual unfortunately.

numberoneson · 08/02/2021 18:28

@Pyewhacket

But they were right. They didn't follow the standing rules. She was not an elected member of the parish council. She had no authority to take executive decisions. And any vote or decision from that meeting would be invalid. I'm not even sure of the legality of it and she may even be liable for any costs incurred. Hilarious maybe but chaotic nonsense.
Didn't you read exactly why she was there, and what her position was?
numberoneson · 08/02/2021 18:35

In case anyone wants one, here's a link to where you can buy masks, sweatshirts, t-shirts, badges etc., with different Jackie Weaver slogans on. (My personal fav is "What Would Jackie Weaver Do?" ) Love them all though! www.redbubble.com/shop/?query=jackie%20weaver&ref=search_box

Theromanempire · 08/02/2021 18:48

Those shirts are amazing Grin although I would like one that said 'please refer to me as Britney Spears from now on'.

Broads93 · 08/02/2021 18:49

She outed toxic masculinity in such a brilliant way! Women are not second class citizens anymore, something that these "men" failed to understand. Feel sorry for their wives, tragic.

Arobase · 08/02/2021 18:53

I think the shirts miss some other choice quotes, e.g. "The Chair of the council is the chair of the .... council" and "I'm trying to have a Zoom meeting, you fool!"

munchkinman · 08/02/2021 19:05

So was amazing fir standing up to those horrible men x

frumpety · 08/02/2021 19:10

@Pyewhacket a Clerk is not an elected position. If you have a look at the job description I posted earlier you will see it involves a lot more than taking minutes.
In many respects the Clerk is far more important to a Parish Council than the Chairperson, they are there to ensure the smooth and legal running of proceedings at meetings, but actually do so much more, pretending they are irrelevant, simply because they are not elected ( as are so many PC Councillors across the Country) is not conducive to a good or well run Parish Council.
Getting rid of one without following the proper protocols is very much frowned upon. It can be difficult enough to find someone with the experience, time and patience to do the job as it is.

frumpety · 08/02/2021 19:18

I guess it depends how many Councillors are on the Council ? One is out of the game for never showing her face, can she be counted or is the position vacant ? so did they have a Quorom ?
I don't think from the clip that she personally took any executive decisions, she simply ran the Zoom meeting, the Chair had decided to object to the meeting occuring in the first place and wished to disrupt the meeting by continuing to question its validity, the Vice Chair deemed it illegal, so if that's the case, JW did them a favour removing them ?

amispeakingenglish · 08/02/2021 19:23

But aren't they tories?

FeeLock28 · 08/02/2021 19:28

#BeMoreJackieWeaver!

winniestone37 · 08/02/2021 19:29

I totally agree! Misogynistic bullies who have forgotten or worse never understood the ‘rules’ are meant as a means to facilitate the purpose of the parish council not as a separate entity for their egos more important than anything else. 🤦‍♀️

frumpety · 08/02/2021 19:30

But aren't they tories?

Don't know, if they have any affiliation with a political party then they should let it be known, if they just vote Conservative, then that is between them and their conscience Wink

MakeWorkYourNewFavourite · 08/02/2021 19:34

@HenriettaHeffalump Get in the back of the van! It's my favourite saying in the world. I say it every time I put the dogs in the car.

MakeWorkYourNewFavourite · 08/02/2021 19:40

It's funny how some things just catch on, isn't it? I wonder if it's because of her name? Jackie Weaver has an incredible ring to it somehow. I always wonder how some things go viral. Captain Tom was another. It was all very lovely, but weird how it skyrocketed. Or maybe it's the times we're living in? We all need something we can agree with or run with?

frumpety · 08/02/2021 19:41

@MakeWorkYourNewFavourite dogs as in plural ? Very jealous ! Grin

BoreOfWhabylon · 08/02/2021 19:44

They have been described as Independent Councillors by various sources.

MakeWorkYourNewFavourite · 08/02/2021 19:46

@frumpety Yep! Two total pillocks (who I love with all my heart). They love it when I say "Get in the back of the van!" It's not even a van. It's a Twingo. Grin

frumpety · 08/02/2021 19:56

@MakeWorkYourNewFavourite PHOTO of total pillocks is required just so I can get my dog fix Smile

ScreamingBeans · 08/02/2021 20:21
@ScreamingBeans

If women behaved like this in a professional context

But many do, though. Or do you think it's just men who can be bullies?
Many don't. I've worked in various places, public sector, charity and private and the number of women who behave like this I can count on one hand. They were disliked and in some cases, feared.

The men who did this were far greater in number and they weren't particularly disliked for it. They were seen as creative geniuses or "that's just his way".

There's a double standard in the way people respond to this unacceptable behaviour.

Lovely13 · 08/02/2021 20:32

Jackie weaver appeared on Last Leg on C4. She was brilliant. Brilliant replies to all the jokes etc. A classy woman. And that parish council meeting was misogyny in a village. Would they have shouted at a man parachuted in to sort their lack of democracy like that?

nannykatherine · 08/02/2021 20:36

Everyone should google
“ how to deal with a mansplainer by Hilary Clinton “
Obviously Jackie had lessons from one of the experts
