To think not everyone washes their hands after every single wee when in their own home?

Anything other than a wee, yes of course.

But washing hands after every bloody wee is overkill in my opinion

@Miljea

Most people who claim to 'wash their hands' -actually mean 'swish my fingertips briefly under a cold dribbling tap for 8 seconds'.

We need to establish what 'wash' means.

'Wash' means hot water and soap. It's simple as that!
Ginfordinner · 07/02/2021 09:54

TBH this thread has been an eye opener to me. As far as I know everyone I know does wash their hands after using the loo. It is the default option, or should be.

Cissyandflora · 07/02/2021 09:55

@eaglejulesk

That's ridiculous. What happens in a disaster time doesn't guide what we do in normal times when we have access to soap and water.

The point I was making, obviously lost on you, is how on earth some of the namby-pamby people on this thread (and indeed many others) would cope with something outside their cozy little germ free worlds. Honestly, it's pathetic the way some people imagine the world is full of nasty germs out to get them at every corner. Those of us with a more earthy nature would manage - others would be in a hysterical heap on the floor, crying "how grim".

So by your fantastical logic the unhygienic, less educated and most selfish amongst men would be the ones to survive a disaster?
Plussizejumpsuit · 07/02/2021 09:57

This thread is amazing! Grin I do, but even before covid I was very hot on hand washing and use of hand gel. In a way some people might have thought ott. Personally I don't think it's that gross. I don't get wee on my hand and can't imagine any adults do!

It also makes me question is everyone washing their hands at home every time they touch their body in any way? Or do we not do that here either?

StanfordPines · 07/02/2021 09:57

@midnightstar66

I completely agree if you are out walking. You haven’t touched anything then. No flush or handles. You won’t be then off into the supermarket touching stuff or making a cup of tea for visitors.

You won't be doing either of these things if you fail to wash your hands when alone in your home either. OP has confirmed she does wash her hands in the situations you have given

You won’t touch the door handles or the flush? You won’t touch other things in your house?
frazzledasarock · 07/02/2021 10:04

I don’t understand why posters are upset at those of us who do wash hands.

I do wash hands with hot water and soap and I also put the toilet lid down every single time before flushing.

Why’s that precious?

This thread has completely confirmed for me why I do not want to be shaking hands with people.

idril · 07/02/2021 10:04

Nope.

I'm happy to take my chances with a bit of bacteria.

BoJoHoNo · 07/02/2021 10:13

It also makes me question is everyone washing their hands at home every time they touch their body in any way? Or do we not do that here either? Depends what area. If I blow my nose then yes, I'd dispose of the used tissue and wash my hands, as it has the potential to spread germs that could make someone sick. If I need to scratch my arm then no I wouldn't as it doesn't carry the same level of risk. I wash my hands before preparing food and drinks or unloading the dishwasher, as again the risk of spreading germs is fairly high.

Happyone8 · 07/02/2021 10:17

I really don’t want to eat at others houses or eat out any more or shake people’s hands now having read this thread . It’s beyond rank. I would love to see how many bacteria are teeming on some people’s hands . Read the link I posted it shows you are picking up faeces particles in any toilet .
I wash my hands after being in the toilet and before any meal I prepare for the safety of my family and others . Not all bacteria is Ok and toughens you up , certainly not bacteria from a toilet area, such as ecoli. Just because you don’t get ill - doesn’t mean others will be safe.
I never get dry hands from washing and if I did I’d use moisturiser . Lazy lazy people

midnightstar66 · 07/02/2021 10:19

I do wash my hands - but door handles etc are regularly touched when coming in from outside, back from the stables or walking the dog before I've made it to the sink to wash hands so they need cleaned regularly anyway. What's the risk to touching things in your home when you've not even touched a bare part of your body anyway? Compared to say the dc sitting on the furniture in the clothes they've been wearing to play in the park or in the woods where there will have been foxes, rats dogs and all sorts. Peoples dogs and cats on furniture with feet that have been outside in public streets or tilling in the grass. As I said I DO wash my hands but just can't see a huge issue with those who don't in that particular circumstance in the grand scheme of things when you think what other contamination's there are in day to day life .

Chocolino · 07/02/2021 10:48

After reading this thread I have decided that:

a) I will try not to use public toilets from now on.
b) I'll be working extra hard on my squats and upping the weights so that when I do have to use public loos I can squat and not sit n the seat
c) Take my own toilet roll, hand soap, and gel

PandoraP · 07/02/2021 11:01

I always knew this as I had observed people not washing their hands in the work toilets too. The main blessing from this pandemic is that there will be a long time until we have to shake hands again. Bliss!

morninglive · 07/02/2021 11:08

@M0rT

It takes 52 sheets if toilet paper to stop any urine from getting on your hands when you wipe....if your using 52 sheets of toilet paper every time you wee you're doing it wrong Grin

Jesus! I hope your hygiene standards improve when you have a newborn! It takes a couple minutes to wash your hands with soap and water.

I feel the same. Whenever we ate out at a restaurant, we’d sit, make our orders and then go and wash our hands. We never observed anyone else doing that at all before Covid and only a few are doing it now. When friends would eat out with us they give us the eyebrow like we were strange for wanting to eat with clean hands. It just highlights to me how disgustingly unhygienic most people are.
OunceOfFlounce · 07/02/2021 11:44

Hm, seems most people who don't wash hands after a wee get on fine.

FlyingFaster · 07/02/2021 11:45

@0gfhty do you flush if you use someone else's toilet? Also it has been established on here that wee is not sterile

Not that poster, but yes, I flush all other toilets apart from my own after a wee. I can save water in my own home, and it's my choice. (and no, wee doesn't smell if you are well hydrated enough).

Happyone8 · 07/02/2021 11:45

Without a care for anyone else ! Sorry you’re gross
OunceOfFlounce · 07/02/2021 11:50

Happyone8 Pretty aggressive; I didn't say what I do?!

How does it work that non washers hurt washers? And if that's the case, should washers stop washing to get the benefits that non washers seem to enjoy?

midnightstar66 · 07/02/2021 12:00

Never though if that, I don't wash my hands before eating in a restaurant (unless I've visited the toilet while waiting for a meal) and in all my days never witnessed anyone else do so - and I worked many years in a restaurant environment. People generally sit down and stay seated, yet funnily enough we aren't awash with swathes of the population coming down with food poisoning or illness as a result. (Pre covid when such things were open obviously)

As for not flushing the toilet I lives abroad for many years where it was drummed in to you not to flush when just a wee as the country couldn't support that level of water use especially in the summer months. (You also had to put shitty toilet paper in the bin 😬)

Happyone8 · 07/02/2021 12:27

@OunceOfFlounce HmmConfused??

I know plenty of people who got ecoli from poor restaurant sanitation, I also got it as a teenager after eating out . They traced the bacteria strain back to the restaurant, after my parents contacted authorities. I was ill for about 2 years after . There’s no excuse for poor hygiene !

mrsjackrussell · 07/02/2021 12:29

Yes I do. But I was a health care professional and know about infection control.

OunceOfFlounce · 07/02/2021 12:43

@Happyone8 So not in your own house, like OP was saying? The most common way to catch Ecoli is through contaminated food, raw stuff touching cooked etc, or fecal matter. I've just read that casual contact (eg shaking hands) will not usually transmit E. coli person to person and it's not shed through urine.

Sorry to hear about your illness Flowers. Still looks like most people who don't wash hands after a wee in their own home get on fine, and haven't hurt the rest of their families either.

paintfairy · 07/02/2021 12:47

I've never had food poisoning. I'm rarely ill. I like to think that's down to my lack of paranoia about being clean. You don't build up an immune system by constantly washing hands!
And when the zombie apocalypse comes its survival of the fittest. I know I'll be fine. 😬🤣

Happyone8 · 07/02/2021 12:51

But you can pick up faecal matter from the toilet area - unless you wee into the air and never touch anything afterwards . It doesn’t matter how clean your toilet it at home - if other people are pooing and touching things in the bathroom afterwards.
The particular finding in that restaurant was no hand soap btw , the raw and cooked were stored fine .
I really struggle with the justifications on here . I do it and I’m fine so I’ll keep doing it . I also don’t believe for one minute these people wash their hands in public toilets either . Their habit is not to wash their hands after weeing
