Aibu to feel a little miffed (re 'vaccine passports')

I'm a healthy 40yo with young children. Elderly but otherwise healthy parents, no otherwise vulnerable close family members. We've spent the last 11 months following all the guidelines and putting our lives on hold, my kids have lost many months of education and we have struggled financially. All for the greater good and happy to do that (mostly).

Now the vulnerable groups are being vaccinated (yay!), and I'm reading about vaccine passports to enable them more freedoms and the ability to travel abroad.

AIBU to be feeling miffed that for all the sacrifices the non-vulnerable have made for others, we are now being penalised again while the elderly and vulnerable we've been protecting are booking their summer holidays??

I just want to clarify that I realise I'm very lucky not to be in the vulnerable group!

Erm...we didn't make the sacrifices for the vulnerable, we made them to ensure that we had a (relatively) functional NHS.

gypsywater · 05/02/2021 13:10

Christ alive!

Aposterhasnoname · 05/02/2021 13:10

I’d wait and see what’s involved. Personally I think it’ll be either a vaccination or a test to begin with, then possibly moving to vaccinated only much later.

QueenPawPaws · 05/02/2021 13:11

The sacrifices were for the NHS. The extremely vulnerable were shielding like myself, I've been inside, alone, for 11 months now
The extremely vulnerable are well aware and unlikely to be going away as it's advised to still shield even after the second jab
I honestly can't get mad at it, people who have shielded alone have had a fucking awful time mostly

luxxlisbon · 05/02/2021 13:11

YABU and you aren't being penalised again.
"and I'm reading about vaccine passports to enable them more freedoms and the ability to travel abroad."

Not from anywhere remotely credibly or reliable. Any official advice is for the vulnerable group who have been vaccinated (most haven't even been fully vaccinated) should continue to follow the exact same social distancing rules.

vodkaredbullgirl · 05/02/2021 13:12
Hmm
gypsywater · 05/02/2021 13:14

Have you honestly spent the past year thinking you've been following restrictions "for the vulnerable" Hmm rather than to prevent the NHS from being overwhelmed?! Surely this message has been hammered home.

2typesofjungle · 05/02/2021 13:15

I see your point OP. My parents and my MIL are all very healthy 60-70 year olds who have carried on regardless through lockdown and really lost very little. I find it hard not to be sightly irked that they are now planning round the world holidays while I still have no idea when my kids will go back to school.

dontdisturbmenow · 05/02/2021 13:15

Yep, some people will get fab holidays, brag about it whilst others will have to make do with the UK again. The thing is, this is nothing to do with individual entitlement or rewards. It's to do with getting the economy again and supporting countries that heavily rely on the trade.

So yes will gain from having been more at risk of dying but survive and tell now support the economy sooner. Shout them!

IthinkIm · 05/02/2021 13:17

I can see your point. I wanted to have a holiday this year but maybe won't as I'm very low down the list to get the jab.

FoxyTheFox · 05/02/2021 13:18

The sacrifices were made to protect everyone, vulnerable and non-vulnerable alike, and don't mean only from covid. If too many people got sick then things like bin collections, food supply chains, law enforcement, fire and rescue, public transport, etc would begin to shut down due to lack of staff. If the NHS was overrun by covid patients then you'd have the double impact of not enough staff due to staff getting infected and no beds for non-covid emergencies due to too many covid patients, good luck with your sudden heart attack or car crash.

The immunity passport, if they come to pass, will allow those people to get back out where they make money and spend money, benefitting the economy. Vaccinations need to be given in priority order so that those who are vulnerable are protected first, thats not unfair.

MammaMiaWallace · 05/02/2021 13:19

Yanbu op! Similar situation except my parents aren’t elderly- in their 60’s.

DavidsSchitt · 05/02/2021 13:19

Jesus wept

TurquoiseDress · 05/02/2021 13:21

As far as I remember it was never about the young(er) generation sacrificing themselves for the elderly & clinically vulnerable

It was about stopping the NHS from collapsing on its knees at the peak of a global pandemic!

ShirleyPhallus · 05/02/2021 13:21

You’d really rather have spent the last year mildly terrified that this illness might kill you, spent it almost entirely indoors while shielding and not ever having been able to go out when everything was open and everyone else was still in the pub etc? You’d absolutely rather to have been in that situation?

FourTeaFallOut · 05/02/2021 13:22

Ffs

And this household of 60 and 70 year olds have been following all the rules as has EVERYONE we know. Just because your relatives don't think is no reason to slander a whole generation, not that it ever stopped mnetters before, sigh.
AlternativePerspective · 05/02/2021 13:23

Ah, another one of these

These threads really show up the (lack of) intelligence in some people.

mootymoo · 05/02/2021 13:23

I doubt vaccine passports will be developed that quickly. Latest projections are most of us will have had one vaccine by July

toconclude · 05/02/2021 13:23

And we can't even plan a fucking UK walking holiday, FYI

Scarlettpixie · 05/02/2021 13:24

Blimey. Yabu.

QueenPawPaws · 05/02/2021 13:24

I must admit I was a teeeeny bit frustrated that my parents who haven't had to shield and have been able to go to the pub/shop/everything else are eligible for the vaccine before me. Which seemed odd when you get letters telling you you're at serious risk and consultants are talking about DNR preferences ConfusedHmm
But it is what it is, we will all get the vaccine if we want it and can all then go on holiday Smile

vodkaredbullgirl · 05/02/2021 13:26

I'm vaccinated (because of my job) and sure as hell can't afford a holiday abroad.

CaughtInTheCovid · 05/02/2021 13:27

I do agree to an extent OP. I also think if this happens and they need to lock down again young people will absolutely not comply.
