Aibu to feel a little miffed (re 'vaccine passports')

I'm a healthy 40yo with young children. Elderly but otherwise healthy parents, no otherwise vulnerable close family members. We've spent the last 11 months following all the guidelines and putting our lives on hold, my kids have lost many months of education and we have struggled financially. All for the greater good and happy to do that (mostly).

Now the vulnerable groups are being vaccinated (yay!), and I'm reading about vaccine passports to enable them more freedoms and the ability to travel abroad.

AIBU to be feeling miffed that for all the sacrifices the non-vulnerable have made for others, we are now being penalised again while the elderly and vulnerable we've been protecting are booking their summer holidays??

OP posts:

@WalrusWife

Thomasina2021 - wait and see. Life won’t be back to normal by summer and we will be in lockdown again by autumn.
I’ve got no idea why people post such doom and gloom stuff as this. Real “the world is ending just you wait and see” negativity
TwirpingBird · 05/02/2021 18:43

@NeverForgetYourDreams

They surely can't do these passports until all the adult population has been offered the vaccine. I will be furious if those over 50 can jet off whilst the rest of us can't.
Some countries are planning them for summer, so yes it will be before the under 50s are vaccinated.
Suzi888 · 05/02/2021 18:48

@2typesofjungle

I see your point OP. My parents and my MIL are all very healthy 60-70 year olds who have carried on regardless through lockdown and really lost very little. I find it hard not to be sightly irked that they are now planning round the world holidays while I still have no idea when my kids will go back to school.
YANBU But you’ll be made to feel like you are on mn.
AlternativePerspective · 05/02/2021 19:03

The key word here is “measures” not that we will be in full lockdown.

Personally I think that masks should remain mandatory during the flu season, plenty of other countries seem to manage it, that could be considered a measure,along with some SD measure.

But nowhere has he said that we will be back in lockdown, so stop spreading this kind of fearmongering bullshit.

CracklinRose · 05/02/2021 19:16

What a disgraceful and absolutely heartless post. Hang your head in shame. Thank god you’re not my daughter!

Other countries are at liberty to place whatever rules/regulations they wish to control people entering their country. There's absolutely sweet FA that the UK govt can do to stop, say, Spain, or America, or Greece, requiring a vaccine certificate to allow entry.
gottakeeponmovin · 05/02/2021 19:38

@TitOfTheIceberg I work fucking hard too and I have had to put my life on hold and that if my children to protect people like your parents so yes, I will be pissed off if they can all go and enjoy a holiday because they've been given a vaccine whilst the rest of us (who didn't need to protect our health, but lost our jobs and had the stress of home schooling our children ) can not.

Oh dear, what a nasty bunch place England has become. You lot are making your own hell and I can see quite a few of you signing up to the eugenics society.

vodkaredbullgirl · 05/02/2021 19:47

51 here, not fucking off any time soon.

pigsDOfly · 05/02/2021 20:18

Surely when the first lockdown was put in place on the 23 March last year it would have been too early to know exactly how disproportionately it was going to affect the elderly and vulnerable.

People were beginning to die in large numbers. The NHS needed to cope with a pandemic caused by an unknown and, clearly, deadly virus and it needed to do it without being overwhelmed. Hence the lockdown to protect the NHS

sunflowertulip · 05/02/2021 20:25

Doesn't really bother me, will only be a few months' difference and anyone spending money is good with me. Also, I agree with some restrictions for non vaccinated (unless medically exempt) in principle and happy to wait my turn.

However, my parents' holiday abroad (both already vaccinated) for the summer was cancelled last week by the company.

Colorindex · 05/02/2021 20:35

Until everyone’s vaccinated there won’t be any jetting off... countries aren’t going to want tourists if their population doesn’t have herd immunity.
Getting a vaccine doesn’t make you 100% safe. We need the adult popn vaccinated before we can approach normal again.
We locked down to protect the NHS and not be overwhelmed, we’re vaccinating the people who are most likely to get very ill and /or die if they get COVID first.
We’re vaccinating people who have been shielding or are very old or are very vulnerable- their lives have also most certainly been far more restricted than yours OP. I’m working in a hub and meeting many, many people who haven’t left their homes since the first lockdown.
If it makes you feel any better, OP, many are so fragile, old, vulnerable or have had their incomes devastated that they won’t be going anywhere on holiday.

WaterOffADucksCrack · 05/02/2021 20:39

Hands up anyone who's mind this didn't even cross because they can't afford a holiday despite providing quality care to those who have needed it 😂

SimonJT · 05/02/2021 20:41

So you’re jealous that you don’t have a chronic health condition.

CracklinRose · 05/02/2021 21:04

Or heaven forbid reach the age of 70

ancientgran · 05/02/2021 21:05

@picklemewalnuts

What bothers me more is the increased pressure from people queue jumping because they want to go on holiday! I want the vaccine so I can go to the shops in person, see people, go on a bus, etc. I don't want people who already do all those things without a vaccine rushing to get one so they can go on holiday.

I'm happy to wait my turn, after people more vulnerable and people more exposed. I don't want to be held up by people who are only getting it so they can go on holiday!

I have a fantasy about picking my own fruit and veg. I'm not ungrateful to Sainsbury's for delivering my groceries every week since the first lockdown started but picking your own fruit and veg is a different matter.

I'm in group 5 so it probably won't be long. I bet I'll be the talk of the town hanging round the greengrocery section in the supermarket.

So yes, YABU

ancientgran · 05/02/2021 21:08

Don't believe what you are told. We have been informed by various ministers this week that all the care homes in England have now had their covid jabs except where there is an active outbreak. I work in a care home, no covid outbreak, no vaccines, no definite date yet.

If they say they are planning vaccine passports it probably means it is the last thing that is ever likely to cross their tiny minds.

Redrunbluerun · 05/02/2021 21:10

YANBU

Colorindex · 05/02/2021 21:20

This reminds me of our neighbour who was pissed off when a new neighbour with a disability moved in and got a dedicated parking space and uses a blue badge. She thought she was ‘lucky’ to get to park wherever she likes for free. I’m pretty sure she’d swap her blue badge in a heartbeat if she could get rid of the two walking sticks she needs to just get to her adapted car.

Colorindex · 05/02/2021 21:21

I’m genuinely happy that my age and health mean that I’ll be one of the last to get vaccinated. I’d rather that than have a chronic illness.

lovelemoncurd · 05/02/2021 21:46

So you made the sacrifice for those poor vulnerable people did you? What if your child had got ill and there were no beds in the hospital?

I can't believe that you've lived through this for months and not worked that out!!

MadinMarch · 05/02/2021 22:47

@pinkared cow

*Honestly, this thread is vile.

flowers to all of you who are challenging the prejudiced people on this thread and to all of you who know what it’s like to be on the sharp end of discrimination. biscuit to the rest of you.*

Well said! I totally agree with you.

Honestly, I'm in my early 60's and CEV. I've spent most of my life believing in the general good of people, and the positives of working as a community for the betterment of that community. I worked my arse of as a social worker in the belief of creating a better and safer community /society for all.
Covid, and people with such selfish and such self indulgent and self interested beliefs that many have expressed on here, have fundamentally changed my views. Forever.
Just listen to yourselves- You resent someone with very significant health issues who has shielded for a whole year? ( A WHOLE YEAR! Of maybe living on their own without touching anyone else at all, or even seeing their their loved ones. That even spent Christmas totally on their own due to the unacceptable risks of seeing their loved ones in that period) being able to go on holiday for a week or two this coming summer? Really? You should be ashamed of yourselves!
I don't have the words to describe how much I despise some of you.

MadinMarch · 05/02/2021 22:49
