Aibu to feel a little miffed (re 'vaccine passports')

I'm a healthy 40yo with young children. Elderly but otherwise healthy parents, no otherwise vulnerable close family members. We've spent the last 11 months following all the guidelines and putting our lives on hold, my kids have lost many months of education and we have struggled financially. All for the greater good and happy to do that (mostly).

Now the vulnerable groups are being vaccinated (yay!), and I'm reading about vaccine passports to enable them more freedoms and the ability to travel abroad.

AIBU to be feeling miffed that for all the sacrifices the non-vulnerable have made for others, we are now being penalised again while the elderly and vulnerable we've been protecting are booking their summer holidays??
@TitOfTheIceberg I work fucking hard too and I have had to put my life on hold and that if my children to protect people like your parents so yes, I will be pissed off if they can all go and enjoy a holiday because they've been given a vaccine whilst the rest of us (who didn't need to protect our health, but lost our jobs and had the stress of home schooling our children ) can not.
This exactly

If the vaccine travel certificates do go ahead, what happens to children? Can they just not travel? This is a complete minefield and would be political suicide if they let one section of society have significantly more freedom than the rest.

Just listen to yourselves- You resent someone with very significant health issues who has shielded for a whole year? ( A WHOLE YEAR! Of maybe living on their own without touching anyone else at all, or even seeing their their loved ones. That even spent Christmas totally on their own due to the unacceptable risks of seeing their loved ones in that period) being able to go on holiday for a week or two this coming summer? Really? You should be ashamed of yourselves!

You’re focusing your outrage on people thinking that they are resenting those that have been truly isolated and suffering a horrendous year. They are not.

Any resentment towards people being allowed to leave the UK before others would be directed at those who have got a vaccine through their job despite not working directly on a covid ward, or those who have been lucky enough to get an end of day spare jab, or the healthy older people who qualify through age but have chosen to ignore lockdown rules when it suits them. That’s a lots of people who have had a year no different to the many critical key workers who have no chance of getting a jab any time soon.

Surely it’s not that hard to open your mind a little bit and see that in a time where everyone’s emotions are a bit closer to the edge than normal, it would be very easy to feel resentment towards someone who is allowed a major special privilege in law when they’ve done nothing different to deserve it?

Vaccine passports won’t develop that fast, because if they did the airlines wouldn’t be able to fill their flights. Soon as vaccination is universal then they will.

I’d have thought a minutes thought would have brought you to this realisation... 🙄

BIWI · 06/02/2021 10:02

JFC the way some of you go on you'd think it would be years before you got the vaccine. It's going to be a matter of a few months and then we'll all be able to decide what we want to do about travel.

meditrina · 06/02/2021 10:16

They're being introduced as the response to expected travel restrictions from foreign countries who will require robust proof of vaccination as an entry requirement.

It would also be 'political suicide' to render it impossible for everyone to travel to those destinations indefinitely because no-one could prove their vaccination status

And another minute to realise that the planes will also be empty if the destination requires proof of vaccination.

Don't airlines get fined if they permit passengers to travel without required documentation?

Eighty year olds in their thousands sunbathing in Greece. The mind boggles! I can just see them boarding planes and getting accommodated with walking sticks etc etc. Their travel insurance will be sky high especially now we have left the EU. So not all good. We have been shielding most of last year and so far this year. We have no plans other than a possible trip to. Premier Inn near the coast but that is not certain by any means. Just long to see our family and friends.

You haven't been making sacrifices to protect the vulnerable.
Many of those have made their own sacrifice to shield and/or stay inside and reduce contact even from 2m.

You've been making sacrifices, along with the rest of the country including those more vulnerable, in order to not overwhelm the Nhs.
This means that everyone benefits. If you or your child has an accident or gets a non covid illness and need hospital treatment I assume you'd rather the nhs wasn't overwhelmed and you could get a bed and the appropriate treatment, especially if any of you needed icu care or ventilation.

I am CV and in many ways I sacrificed my health to teach children** last term, face to face with no social distancing and no protective measures except an open window. I caught covid and was in hospital and had 7 weeks off, and over 3 months later I'm still not fully better and now in life long mediation as a result.

So no, you're not the only one to have their life's restricted due to covid and lockdowns. Those who are more vulnerable are likely to have made far more sacrifices overall.

@LazyName

Yanbu the whole ‘vaccine’ passport idea is ridiculous
You do know that some countries already require you to have vaccinations before you visit and have done for years.

I went to Kenya over 2p years ago and needed proof that I had been vaccinated for yellow fever. We had to have a yellow card stating the date and how long before it expired.

Why do we think we can decide what entry requirements other countries have in place?

It's also very likely that anyone who can't have the vaccine due to age (children), allergies or medical reasons will be exempt.

None of the major religions say people can't be vaccinated and in England pretty much all have actively encouraged their fellows to have it once they are called.

Anti-vaxxers - that's their choice not to vaccinate. However most choices come with consequences. There is nothing physically stopping them from being vaccinated when their time comes, they are simply choosing not to.

Similarly, rates will naturally go down as we move toward spring, and countries that depend on tourism will not refuse entry without a vaccine until most of their potential client base can get one.

Again, a minutes thought... 🙄
