Made to feel guilty as I’ve had the Covid vaccination!

DottyDonut · 04/02/2021 18:22

So I have a teen DC (CEV) who was vaccinated against Covid yesterday, I was with him and was offered one too as the clinic had quite a few cancellations apparently. I certainly wasn’t expecting it so was caught on the spot but thought I’d be pretty stupid to turn it down so had it.

I mentioned it to my sister who was quite pissed off saying it wasn’t fair! She has since told her husband and I got a sarcastic message from her SIL this morning asking me if I was proud of myself ‘jumping the queue’ and how did I deserve to be so lucky. No, I’m not lucky to have a DS who’ll never live independently Angry. She not very nice anyway and I know she has been really scared of getting Covid as she’s very overweight but this is really nasty isn’t it?

I didn’t do anything wrong. Would anyone have turned it down in my shoes?

What a bitch. I would call her out on it, reply and say "No, I’m not lucky to have a DS who’ll never live independently. Would you rather the vaccine had gone in the bin instead of my arm?"

Or just a simple "mind your own fucking business, spiteful cow". Angry

austenwildfell · 04/02/2021 18:50

The practice I use seemed to be doing people who had just taken someone or was helping a person who couldn't drive.
There were 6 people giving injections.
No big deal as there was only a short queue.
Had people been strung out across car park it might have been different.
The supply chain is actually as good as BoJo says.

It is getting ahead of targets in England and I think in Wales.

lljkk · 04/02/2021 18:50

omg, this stuff is so petty.

I hope you can be a saint great person & rise above, OP.

RandomMess · 04/02/2021 18:50

With family like that who needs enemies ShockConfusedAngry

yearinyearout · 04/02/2021 18:51

Nope. In fact I live two minutes walk from our surgery and I'm hoping they'll ring me one evening and ask me to hotfoot it down there for a leftover!

Odile13 · 04/02/2021 18:52

You didn’t do anything wrong. I’m sorry you’ve been treated badly. I would have done the same thing as you.

Scarby9 · 04/02/2021 18:52

A friend took his 90 year old dad for his vaccine. They refused to give the dad it (another story, and he will hsve it soon) but my friend was offered it instead.
His dad hasn't let him forget it in a typical family jokey way.

TheDuchessOfBeddington · 04/02/2021 18:53

Sorry Dog that was harsh. You must be worried about your DH.

But every vaccine not wasted gets us one step closer.

pensivepigeon · 04/02/2021 18:54

I was asked and was surprised. But it turns out because I've had cancer in the past. I took the vaccination too. The NHS don't want you to refuse! You make the decision to have it or not when you are offered. They don't say, 'Do you want to postpone it indefinitely for a none medical reason? It's 'Can you have it? Yes, great!'.

Cuddling57 · 04/02/2021 18:56

It's them not you!
Good for you for accepting the vaccine.
Don't let their nastiness upset you and ruin the good & lucky feeling you should be having tonight.
Now look at yourself in the mirror and say well done Dotty with a big smile on your face and possible a
Glass full of your favourite to raise Grin. Today was a good day Grin

Iliketeaagain · 04/02/2021 18:56

It makes perfect sense for you to have it if there was spares. Means that you can both have an appointment together for your 2nd doses rather that you having to go in "whatever queue" your SIL deems appropriate for you to be in. Spare vaccine in an available arm is better than throwing it away and if there hadn't been spares, you wouldn't have got one, so i suppose it is lucky (but absolutely reasonable that you got one). It could even be that the vials had to be used within 15-30 minutes, which isn't a lot of time to ring round and get people to a vaccination centre.

Would they be offering to support your DS if you ended up incapacitated with covid if you had turned the vaccine down because it wasn't your place in the queue?

Quaagars · 04/02/2021 18:57

Wow, unanimous 100% YANBU, not seen that before with so many votes!
Says it all really!
Of course you are not being unreasonable, seriously ignore, she's being ridiculous.
You'd think she'd be PLEASED one more person was vaccinated, the more the better!
Totally her issue, not yours.

Mylittlesandwich · 04/02/2021 18:57

Yup, they're being unreasonable. If someone I knew was asked to have the vaccine by being lucky I may well be jealous but I wouldn't grudge them it!

BBCONEANDTWO · 04/02/2021 18:58

You'd think she would be happy for you - the more vaccinated the safer it is. That's pretty horrible.

SeasonFinale · 04/02/2021 18:58

I am happy they are not being wasted. Ignore your weirdo family and extended family. Tell them MN says YANBU to have it.

lockdownalli · 04/02/2021 18:58

They are utter cunts to be honest OP.

I have two friends who are carers and both were offered the vaccine when they accompanied their DP/DH to be vaccinated due to being CEV. They were not expecting it but delighted, like you I am sure. I was pleased for them and of course it makes sense that someone who is CEV's carer should be vaccinated.

Another friend is volunteering as a marshall at a huge vaccination venue and at the end of each day they vaccinate volunteers/people collecting others/anyone they can get hold of.

I would block the bitch to be honest.

ktp100 · 04/02/2021 19:00

Would they rather cancelled vaccinations be binned?

What absolute idiots and rude, to boot!

I do hope you sent stern return message, OP!

SeamstressfromTreacleMineRoad · 04/02/2021 19:00

Take a look at the vote - first 100 % that I can remember..! That should reassure you Smile

Thatwentbadly · 04/02/2021 19:00

Would they have preferred it went in the bin? There is evidence to suggest that the Oxford vaccine prevents transmission so it would have been selfish for you to have not had it.

JoannaDory · 04/02/2021 19:01

Every person vaccinated is one closer to the end of the pandemic. As a carer you cannot afford to get Covid and it was absolutely right that you were offered the vaccine.

Even if you were not, as you were there and there was a spare vaccine it is also absolutely right that you took it to avoid waste. There is now a space free for someone else to have a vaccination.

MintyMabel · 04/02/2021 19:04

Carers for CEV children are on the priority list aren’t they? Seem unusual you would have to rely on there being spare on the day, most I know are being offered joint appointments with their teens.

QueenoftheAir · 04/02/2021 19:04

A 100% YANBU

Your family are rude.

Chocolino · 04/02/2021 19:04

I wouldn't have turned it down either. Better than it going to waste and everyone is going to get it anyway. You have been very responsible not letting it go to waste.

Tell her to fuck off.

MrsGulDukat · 04/02/2021 19:04

My work were part of a Covid clinic and giving jabs to people who werent a priority at that point. There were spare jabs that would not keep. Better they get put into anyone rather than no one.

I've had mine as NHS staff, I wont feel guilty for having it even I'm not patient facing. You shouldnt feel guilty either.

Toocold · 04/02/2021 19:05

Surely you having it is protecting your son so I would have thought you would have been offered it earlier than your sister and BIL anyway? They’re idiots for not realising you would want to protect your son. Personally I am happy with anyone having it, better than waste.
