Made to feel guilty as I’ve had the Covid vaccination!

DottyDonut · 04/02/2021 18:22

So I have a teen DC (CEV) who was vaccinated against Covid yesterday, I was with him and was offered one too as the clinic had quite a few cancellations apparently. I certainly wasn’t expecting it so was caught on the spot but thought I’d be pretty stupid to turn it down so had it.

I mentioned it to my sister who was quite pissed off saying it wasn’t fair! She has since told her husband and I got a sarcastic message from her SIL this morning asking me if I was proud of myself ‘jumping the queue’ and how did I deserve to be so lucky. No, I’m not lucky to have a DS who’ll never live independently Angry. She not very nice anyway and I know she has been really scared of getting Covid as she’s very overweight but this is really nasty isn’t it?

I didn’t do anything wrong. Would anyone have turned it down in my shoes?

OP posts:

"It was me or the bin and the bin didn't believe in covid".

LadyMayoGoodway · 04/02/2021 19:29

She’s being a c*nt ignore her. It’s a great way to ensure no wastage.

Plus now it’s looking more and more likely they stop transmission and quite significantly I think any hole’s a goal quite frankly!!

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 04/02/2021 19:30

You’re a carer! You were offered the vaccination legitimately. Nothing wrong with that.

digginthedancingqueen · 04/02/2021 19:30

Ignore and rise above them! They are just jealous. It would be insane to turn it down.

MattTebbutsForearms · 04/02/2021 19:30

Show your SIL this screenshot. Then don't bother interacting with her again as she is a twat.

Made to feel guilty as I’ve had the Covid vaccination!
ItsNotAlrightButItsOkay · 04/02/2021 19:31

You did nothing wrong!

pensivepigeon · 04/02/2021 19:31

But I can't help feel a bit miffed that I have to wait another two weeks. Surely they are only spare if everyone that was scheduled to have one that day has had one?

I get you. But that is the organiser's faults not the patient's, surely?

LadyMayoGoodway · 04/02/2021 19:31

@pensivepigeon this happened in our area last month too, apparently no one had thought of a reserve list - FFS 🙄🙄.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 04/02/2021 19:32

@pensivepigeon

Not liking the judgement on the thread though. Can everybody just not mind their own business? Nothing to do with anybody else who decides to have the vaccine and who doesn't. Bodily autonomy all the way.

Yes, but no, but!Grin

Bodily autonomy. Absolutely!

However, I think people on this thread are just saying it's a good thing if you can have it. In support of the OP. Not that you should have the vaccine under any circumstance. Of course there are some people who have to be more cautious. That's how I understood it, anyway...

Ah yes, it was the post by Hercules12 that got up my nose actually, that she would have judged the OP if she'd refused it.

That's what I meant. I picked the one post in well over 100 that was judgemental.

oakleaffy · 04/02/2021 19:32

@DottyDonut
The vaccine would possibly have been wasted had you not had it.
People get very jealous
But mum knows parents of a very clinically vulnerable son and they nursed him every day of his life.
He died- as they were told he might- despite the best care, and if this woman is being beastly,
Just tell her she is lucky she isn’t in your shoes with the stress and upset that can come caring for a much loved child who will need care well into adulthood.

Lovemusic33 · 04/02/2021 19:33

Of course you shouldn’t feel guilty. My friend was taking her dd to get hers today, I really hope if there was spare she was offered one too. Caring for someone who is vulnerable is a huge worry, I have a dd who has SN’s and I worry what will happen if I get sick, who will care for her? I am a single parent, so if I was offered it I would take it.

IDKNABYBIF22 · 04/02/2021 19:33

@Jux

"I have heard (can't prove it) that in one of the clinics near us, the volunteers are given the spare doses at the end of the day. I'm not sure whether that's because the vaccine they have won't 'keep' overnight, or what. If it's that they don't keep then it's fair enough."

The Pfizer vaccine can only be stored in the fridge for 5 days, after that it has to either be used or binned. Volunteers who helping with the vaccine are eligible for a vaccine now anyway as they are in priority group 2.

BluebellsGreenbells · 04/02/2021 19:33

Well you haven’t jumped the cue. You took a left over vaccine - the queue has now reduced by one for everyone else

That’s also a good thing!

Imagine 10 doses a day are left x that by every vaccine center and that greatly reduces numbers in other categories.

You did the right thing!

SpiderinaWingMirror · 04/02/2021 19:33

Nobody in their right mind would have turned it down. Your CEV teen is dependent on you. Who would do the caring?

pensivepigeon · 04/02/2021 19:33

That's what I meant. I picked the one post in well over 100 that was judgemental.

Oh, I see. I missed that one.

Vulpius · 04/02/2021 19:34

I think you deserve a medal, OP, for a 100% YANBU!

MrDarcysMa · 04/02/2021 19:34

Well they'd be off my Christmas list sharpish

jessycake · 04/02/2021 19:35

I get so annoyed by this you are not jumping the queue , the vaccine would have been thrown away. Anyone using up vaccine that would otherwise be wasted bumps someone up the queue

CaveMum · 04/02/2021 19:35

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe

What is CEV? I've seen it posted a few times now.
@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe it stands for Clinically Extremely Vulnerable - people with serious pre-existing conditions that mean they are at higher risk of severe disease if infected with Covid.
LadyMayoGoodway · 04/02/2021 19:37

Can’t unpaid carers get them any way or apply to I’m sure there’s a stringent process but I’m sure I read that....actually that’s reminded me was going to tell my Mum as she’s a register unpaid carer from my Granny. She’s 60 so think she’ll be a while yet.

Barton10 · 04/02/2021 19:37

People are ridiculous we are all going to get it before long. I certainly wouldn’t want them wasting doses. You are one less person to have it later on. Ignore them.

Iloveacurry · 04/02/2021 19:37

For all you know, the vaccine may of been wasted if you didn’t have it, so no you shouldn’t feel guilty.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 04/02/2021 19:38

CaveMum, Oh, of course it is! Makes perfect sense. Many thanks.

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 04/02/2021 19:38

Better for you to have it, than for it go to waste. Every dose is precious and they were right to offer it to you if they knew they had an open vial that needed using within the 6 hours or face throwing it away.

midsomermurderess · 04/02/2021 19:39

No one can make you feel guilty. You're accepting their judgment. Shift you perspective. Acknowledge that you were entitled to have the vaccination.
