Made to feel guilty as I’ve had the Covid vaccination!

So I have a teen DC (CEV) who was vaccinated against Covid yesterday, I was with him and was offered one too as the clinic had quite a few cancellations apparently. I certainly wasn’t expecting it so was caught on the spot but thought I’d be pretty stupid to turn it down so had it.

I mentioned it to my sister who was quite pissed off saying it wasn’t fair! She has since told her husband and I got a sarcastic message from her SIL this morning asking me if I was proud of myself ‘jumping the queue’ and how did I deserve to be so lucky. No, I’m not lucky to have a DS who’ll never live independently Angry. She not very nice anyway and I know she has been really scared of getting Covid as she’s very overweight but this is really nasty isn’t it?

I didn’t do anything wrong. Would anyone have turned it down in my shoes?

All top 4 groups can book now, regardless if they have the letter or not

Go onto the link and book.

You may need to keep checking back to get an appointment closer to home

Surely the sensible thing to do is vaccinate carers? What a weird attitude.
At least you know what she really thinks now.

Butterfly44 · 04/02/2021 21:09

Omg! I would so not reply and not talk to her for a very long time! Until she apologised at least.

It's a CRIME to waste vaccine. If it's not used it will be discarded. It cannot be kept so absolutely they will be offering spares to whoever is around at the time. Carers are ideal! It's pure jealousy talking and I hope she feels guilty for saying that. If there is no remorse or apology I would be having very little to do with them in future.

Maryann1975 · 04/02/2021 21:09

You would have been a fool to turn it down. I long to be in your position of being in the right place at the right time. But the reason you were there is not through luck, but because you have a really vulnerable child. So you doubly deserve to have the vaccine. Has your sil thought that if you became ill, who would be looking after your dc? Ignore the nasty cow bag. For every person who is vaccinated, those of us who haven’t been stand a better chance of not catching it and if we do, that there will be space in hospital should we need it (as hopefully the vulnerable won’t be getting such severe symptoms as to need hospitalising).

iljatdip · 04/02/2021 21:09

I think that the vast majority of people in your position would have done the same. The only people who might not are those who do not wish to have the vaccine.

I think if it happened to me I wouldn't tell anyone I'd been vaccinated because some people can get very nasty about it. This is not the first story I've heard of family members being unpleasant to someone who has received the vaccine.

Redrunbluerun · 04/02/2021 21:09

You’ve saved wasting a vaccine and you’re helping us get out of this mess 👍 I don’t care if I’m the last person in the country to get it! Weird attitude from them.

KnackeredHag · 04/02/2021 21:10

You did nothing wrong. She doesn't sound very nice tbh. How would your child cope if you were badly affected by covid? You haven't jumped a queue, but she clearly has when she took leave of her senses. You can't reason with stupid.

Disfordarkchocolate · 04/02/2021 21:17

I'm glad you had it. What happens to your child is you get ill with Covid?

Pixie2015 · 04/02/2021 21:18

You saved a vaccine going to waste and you support a clinical vulnerable person - you are a star they are mean x

Colorindex · 04/02/2021 21:20

I've read a few times that unused vaccines are discarded’

Not in our hub they aren’t. It’s tight as anything on how much we have for the clinic/day
And drawn up or open doses... it’s not as if a no show in the morning means a left over shot in the evening, it’s very closely monitored and the vaccine is used throughout the day one way or an other. At the end of the night the few ‘extras’ are offered to staff or volunteers or as in this case, to a carer or similar who weren’t booked in.
It’s accurate and nothing is wasted. A balancing act between having enough for the people due in that day and making sure not one single vaccine goes to waste.

redsquirrelfan · 04/02/2021 21:26

I would have thought it was sensible for people with immediate family members with vulnerabilities to have the vaccine at the same time as their family members are.

Why are people jealous? Why would you care if you don't need it yet?

NoIDontLikeTrains · 04/02/2021 21:28

@saraclara cool!

willloman · 04/02/2021 21:28

She's nasty.

littlebillie · 04/02/2021 21:30

Ignore, you would probably get one in the next few weeks as a carer.

GeordieGreigsButtButtZoom · 04/02/2021 21:31

I'd respond to that kind of deranged stupidity by sending her a video clip of myself dancing around singing, "I got the vaccine, I got the vaccine, I am better than you la la la", but there's a reason I don't work in mediation or diplomacy.

jgb129 · 04/02/2021 21:32

You did nothing wrong at all. You were offered it and you took it. Better than wasting a dose. On another note you say your child will never live independently, so are you their you deemed their carer? I only ask as Carers are in line to get the vaccine anyway - not sure when but sooner than most. In turn you getting the vaccine will be a massive benefit. 🌸 people are just crazy at the minute! Don’t feel guilty!

Ameliablue · 04/02/2021 21:33

You didn't jump the queue, you prevented a vaccine going to waste.

Stovetopespresso · 04/02/2021 21:33

of course you did the right thing op!! I admit i had a 'moment' when someone on a WhatsApp got it due to being a foster carer and put pics up of her certificate and asking the teachers on the group magnanimousy how their tests are going etc, and a family member put hers all over Facebook ... but I admit it...I was just jealous! Envy

Grin yeah maybe not that adessoe laugh though
Sacredspace · 04/02/2021 21:35

Unpaid carers are now entitled to the vaccine. You need to be protected as you are caring for your son.

Stovetopespresso · 04/02/2021 21:35

sorry for typo made me laugh

saraclara · 04/02/2021 21:36
@saraclara cool!
Yep! She was the first person I'd heard of getting one without an appointment.

Nenevalleykayaker · 04/02/2021 21:36

These are strange times, they’re just speaking out of turn because it’s frustrating for them. Stay polite despite it all.

RoseHipps · 04/02/2021 21:37

Just to reiterate everyone else, you did absolutely nothing wrong or unreasonable! Pleased you had it and pleased it didn’t go to waste!
