AIBU to wish for a dog-free park?

I live in a lovely outer London borough with about ten parks within half an hour's walk, full of young families, great place to bring up children... except for the dogs.

My 2yo DS is TERRIFIED of dogs and, unfortunately, so am I. He's got it from me, I know, and it's just awful. I was so scared as a child I'd cry if I had to walk past a dog on the street and after years of work I got to the point where I felt I wasn't very comfortable around dogs but could live a normal life. However, seeing my DS being nervous around them has brought it all back and honestly now I come out in a cold sweat if I see a dog. I try to put a brave face on it for him, I really do, but he can tell I'm scared and we just wind each other up, I think.

So I find myself barely able to use any of the parks because every single one is full of dogs all the time. The one closest to our house, the fenced-off playground is right next to the entrance so we can do a sprint in and then it's OK. But one time several months ago, someone's dog got in (to their credit, they leapt in straight away and manhandled it out again) and he STILL talks about it and looks for dogs before he will play.

But the other ones, it's like a tiny little island of playground in the middle of acres and acres of dogs chasing each other, barking, etc. It's not even about whether their owners are responsible or not any more. If a dog so much as looks at DS, he freaks. And there are lots of owners who trot out the old "He's just being friendly!" while I hold a sobbing DS and try not to cry myself!

There is just no open space in the whole of our neighbourhood that doesn't have dogs in it. I'd love to be able to go for walks, take him out for a picnic, kick a ball around... But we can never relax because there's always a dog. Even if we weren't scared, we'd end up tripping over them or having one come over for a taste of our sandwiches.

I know IABU to be so scared of dogs. I do. But AIBU to wish there was one dog free park in this apparent suburban park paradise?

I love dogs and always had one growing up but There is so much dog shite around these days I think there should definitely be ‘dog free zones’ where you can walk, cycle or even sit on the grass without coming across mountains of the stuff! Disgusting!

I love my dog but I completely agree with you OP. At our local park, all you can smell, as soon as you arrive, is dog wee.
It's disgusting. If I had small children now, i dont think I would let them play there, the situation has got so much worse since lockdown too.

Aww I feel for you. Do you have a National Trust place you can go to? Dogs only allowed on leads. That's what we do, and they have picnic areas

I found one! You convinced me I wasn't totally mad and I asked around a bit and there is one! It's a fair walk away, so not likely to be "our regular", but we went there today and it's a playground and (bliss!) an actual little fenced-off bit of grass with no dogs signs on the gates. DS can kick a ball around, we can sit and have a picnic... apparently the no dogs thing is generally respected in that one too. It's pretty hidden away down a side street so I think most people don't know it's there. I am so pleased!

I was sitting in a bench yesterday and three dogs owned by two separate people, wiped their muddy paws on my clean jeans. I was not pleased. I'm definitely a cat person!

I agree. We have a double whammy that the only properly accessible places for our DD to exercise at the moment are public parks but we can't go there because of the minority of entitled dog owners who think their dogs should be allowed to run free wherever they like.

I'd be happy to compromise with a law that says all dogs should be on leads in certain places at all times. Public parks would be one of those places.

In my experience this is rarely policed.

We have a large park nearby which has a 'dog' half and a 'non dog half' which is nice to have the best of both worlds.

My dad also lives nearby and he regularly walks his dog in the dog half, but when we meet for a walk we go in the non dog half which he finds thrilling as he doesn't normally get to go to that bit. Take what excitement you can in lockdown!! Grin

I can totally sympathise with this because my 9 year old DD has always been terrified of them too. Unsure why because no one else in the family is afraid of them but she would literally jump in the road to avoid one (and has tried to a fair few times!). She’s just about ok with dogs on leads provided they’re a fair distance away from her but the ones running free, no chance! Hate the dog shit too, it’s a massive problem seemingly everywhere you go.

This is a wonderful proposition.
