They're going to hide behind the unconstitutionality of it all. Such a shame but as Rousette says it's documented there for history.

Roussette · 10/02/2021 23:32

He won't get convicted, the votes aren't there... but like anything you brush under the carpet, it stews and festers and it doesn't go away. This will affect the GOP for years, if not decades to come.

The GOP is hostile to democracy and there needs to be an attempt to hold Trump accountable, even if it's doomed. And it will show Democrats care about accountability. And how complicit Republicans are.

Yes agreed

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) after Day 2 of the impeachment trial: “I don’t see how Donald Trump could be re-elected to the presidency again.”

And after the dust has settled, I hope people reflect on what happened when they vote in the primaries. If they really believe in the democratic process then I hope they punish those senators who vote to acquit this week. If Trump isn't convicted then it's a green light for the next narcissistic despot to take it one step further.
QuestionableDanceMoves · 10/02/2021 23:37

Thanks @Roussette - there definitely were failings on the 6th

Naively I thought the Republican senators wouldn’t want to acquit as then they could move to bar Trump from running for office again.
When you see all the evidence laid out in chronological order showing exactly how Trump incited his base it’s almost unbelievable that he won’t face any real consequences- what’s to stop each future president in their lame duck period from doing the same?

Roussette · 10/02/2021 23:45

Exactly, totally agree

Before I go to sleep, I've started a new thread, no hurry to go over there, but it's ready when we are Smile

It is galling to hear that whilst the rioters were inside the Capitol building... Trump was calling a Republican Tuberville urging him to delay the certification with an objection.

They've just shown footage of what was going on at the time when Trump was making this call. Shock

Cruz coverring his back

Sen. Cruz tells us footage is “horrific” and that everyone on video should go to jail for a “very long time” but claimed Ds didn’t prove Trump is culpable

“I’ve said many times that the President's rhetoric is at times overheated” but said it’s not “referendum” on his rhetoric

DuncinToffee · 11/02/2021 00:01

Donald Trump's defense counsel Bruce Castor said the House managers failed in their presentation to connect the rioters' acts to the former president.

“I didn't learn anything that I didn't already know,” he told @tedbarrettcnn

“We know a mob reached the Capitol and wreaked havoc in the building. I’m waiting for them to connect that up to President Trump and so far that hasn’t happened,” Castor said
Asked if he is worried the video will have an emotional impact on the jury, he said: “It would have an emotional impact on any jury. But there are two sides of the coin and we have not played ours.”

Roussette · 11/02/2021 00:03

To me... it's connected all the dots straight up to Trump even more.

ludothedog · 11/02/2021 00:27

I honestly don't see how you can argue that Trump wasn't responsible for the riot. But for his actions would they have gone there, he then sent them to the capital and told them to fight like hell.

DGRossetti · 11/02/2021 09:57

US is still perilously close to a failed nation.

One of the reasons the US finally felt it had to do something about civil rights and race relations in the 50s was the fear that it was playing right into the hands of the USSR as a propaganda tool.

Not quite sure I'd be happy with having too much of my capital tied up in a country where lawmakers who are tasked with upholding the law can't agree on the laws they are upholding. Especially when in doing so they are ignoring the rulings of the body that was set up to agree the laws to uphold.

I cannot read it @lionheart

NotaRealLawyer · 11/02/2021 12:02

Imagine how it must feel to be one of those officers injured at the Capitol that day, having put your life on the line to protect these people.
Only to see the people you did your best to save, vote for Trump's acquittal.

BruceAndNosh · 11/02/2021 12:07

The prosecution /impeachment managers presentations are very good. Trump would be easily convicted if it weren't for the fact that nearly half the jury wouldn't convict him even if there was video of Trump erecting that noose outside the Capitol.
I think even Lisa Murkowski is wavering.
Most will weasel out insisting they couldn't convict even if they wanted to as the impeachment is unconstitutional. Which is ironic considering many also complained about Trump legal challenges 'only failing' because of technical lack of standing and jurisdiction

NotaRealLawyer · 11/02/2021 12:12

Hawley and Cruz etc are accomplices to all of this, and yet sitting as jurors too.

PerkingFaintly · 11/02/2021 12:24

We know this is history being written.

How each Senator votes will go down in history by their name.

They'd better be sure that how they vote is something they'll be happy to be remembered for in 25 years' time, and in 50 years' time.

Something they'll be happy for their grandchildren and great-grandchildren to learn in school.

I'm sure they'd love to be able to say, "Oh but we didn't know! If only someone had told us!"

The impeachment managers are making sure they do know, and are seen to know...

BruceAndNosh · 11/02/2021 12:55

Accomplices, witnesses and jurors. Hell they even work for the same firm! So so wrong
Roussette · 11/02/2021 14:24

Perking so agree with your last post.

I honestly think if the rioters had injured or god forbid killed Pence or Pelosi... they would still say it was nothing to do with Trump, and vote against impeachment on some sort of constitutional argument.

They have no conscience or moral compass

I 'lost yesterday' due to side effects of my 2nd covid jab. It was pretty awful, but worth it for immunity.

Thanks for the 'blow by blow' and links on this thread, keeping me up to date.
