So true

If Senate Republicans fail to convict Donald Trump, it won't be because the facts were with him or his lawyers mounted a competent defense. It will be because the jury includes his co-conspirators.

Sorry for just copying and pasting tweets without mentioning the authors, there are so many tweeting basically the same thing at the same time, that I can't really keep up otherwise

NotaRealLawyer · 10/02/2021 18:29

Footage of Stop the Stealers shouting outside of a Governors house .
Effective building up this narrative of Trump's constant incitement in the months building up to the election.

Roussette · 10/02/2021 18:30

It really is very apt that Trump's tweets come back to bite him on the arse.

There is no denying of them.

As Eric Swalwell says... Trump tweeted/reminded them (his supporters) over and over and over again to turn up on Jan. 6th

The issue is that no matter how strong a case the impeachment managers put forward, and how much evidence there is, the majority of Republicans are still not going to vote to impeach Trump anyway, for reasons that have nothing to do with the election or the insurrection.

I really don't understand why the vote can't be anonymous. You can guarantee that behind the scenes Trump is bullying, blackmailing and bribing. The trial is almost meaningless, as they are going to acquit him anyway.

NotaRealLawyer · 10/02/2021 18:31

Keep going Duncin, you are painting a good picture for the rest of us.

prettybird · 10/02/2021 18:32

LQ - that's what I was remembering. But he'd be even more apoplectic this time around Grin

His last impeachment (ShockHmm) was more esoteric and based on a technicality - even though what he did was wrong. This one is attacking him rightly personally

I do so hope that a whole load of Republican senators suddenly decide that they are indisposed and can't attend - but unfortunately I think that too many of them are too feart/corrupt/sycophants/right wing loonies/power hungry (perm any combination of those choices) and will vote against the impeachment in the face of overwhelming evidence.

Roussette · 10/02/2021 18:33

I cannot get over how incriminating this all is.

He'll probably get away with it, but it is so obvious what he was doing.

Inciting insurrection.

You'd think that Trump had reversed so many norms in his term at the White House, that Congress could be prevailed upon to reverse their own voting norms, wouldn't you? But then, you'd think they'd be starting to amend the Constitution properly to stop a Trump happening again, and that's not going to happen, either.
DuncinToffee · 10/02/2021 18:35

Re Republicans

Jim Sciutto @jimsciutto

Keep in mind: most Republican senators in the chamber today refused to reject the big lie about a stolen election for weeks after Nov 3 - and eight of them voted the night of Jan 6 to overturn results.

Roussette · 10/02/2021 18:38

Hearing clips of Trump with his voice droning on... ye gods I don't miss him. It's so refreshing not to have to listen to him anymore.
Thank God he's gone whatever happens.

It should be anonymous, I agree, I think the vote would be very different.

I'd be shocked if they don't aquit.
But for now, the world can see exactly what's happened. It's an historical record too.
And the GOP is finished, if representatives can't live up to the Oaths they took.
Trump, long term, is finished.

No legislature in the world has anonymous voting

we have a right to know how they vote on every issue

DuncinToffee · 10/02/2021 18:50

CNN roundtable says some Senators were reading books with their feet up on their desks while the impeachment trial was happening. (There are no reaction camera shots, per an agreement.)

New on @MSNBC: Republican Josh Hawley wasn't paying attention for parts of the trial. He was sitting with his legs up on the seat in front of him, reading unrelated materials, according to @GarrettHaake.

The vote to remove Liz Cheney was anonymous. I'm sure if it hadn't been, the vote would have been very different.

I completely get your point about the public needing to know how their representatives vote, but it leaves the Senators open to so much more corruption and coercion.

Donald Trump has been very clear about making it his goal to destroy anyone who votes to impeach him. That must be making a difference in how Senators are planning to vote.

What a despicable and disrespectful person. God help America if he wins the 2024 election. There are rumours of him wanting to run.

It doesn't surprise me, at all.

Which is quite sad really.

And I read Rand Paul was doing a very detailed doodle of the Capitol. Not looking up, not listening.

What bastards they are. They have a duty to listen.

It reminds me of when Jacob Rees Mogg lay out on one of the HoC benches and pretended to go to sleep when someone was speaking.

Rude, disrespectful and says everything about these people who should be honoured and awed to be in this position.
