Bloody squirrels

Counttotenandtryagain · 21/01/2021 14:27

So sat at home today on a day off and noticed a couple of squirrels on the balcony. I think they might be living on the balcony next door as there’s a gap between the two balconies. I’ve rung the housing association abs their going to get pest control to get in touch. But I’m a vegan abs the thought of finding a dead squirrel on the balcony makes me feel a bit queasy 😬.
Any suggestions on how to discourage the buggers. I’m on the second floor.

@Elai1978

No one should be feeding grey squirrels, they’re vermin! Do you put food out for the rats?
It’s been known
Hoppinggreen · 21/01/2021 15:19

@Bluntness100

Never seen a thread like this. Where a load of carnivores get on a vegans case for trying to have innocent animals slaughtered for no reason.
If she was planning to eat it I would be ok with it
Hobbesmanc · 21/01/2021 15:21

Pest control aren't going to be bothered if they are outside lol. Anymore than pigeons or mice. Although squirrels are very cheeky and will have no hesitation coming in if they spot food!

Personally I love them and it saddens me the odd occasion when one gets too cocky and the cats get it. Don't get the vegan thing either so I'm assuming its a wind up

BigBadVoodooHat · 21/01/2021 15:27

The OP doesnt want to "escape veganism " so why on earth would you wish her good luck in it

Given that she is planning to hire assassins to come and murder them, I think the world's shittest vegan might do well to rethink her devotion to the cause.

mumwon · 21/01/2021 15:29

I bet their eating her bulbs - the little blighters use to dig up all our spring bulbs take a bite out of one than carefully scatter the rest in other places in the garden
Which was quite useful because it meant that we didn't have to divide them -but it was a bit of an issue when they demolished the rare ones like caviar

Justcallmebebes · 21/01/2021 15:29

Funny kind of vegan that wants poor innocent squirrels exterminated. Why?

AprilThe8th · 21/01/2021 15:29

Lovely bit of Squirrel.Yabu.

HollaHolla · 21/01/2021 15:32

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles

Could you get an owl and attach it to a stick and poke it out the window whenever a squirrel appears?
I laughed so much at this that Siri thought I was shouting at it. Grin
Theunamedcat · 21/01/2021 15:32

Squirrel killer? Your a strange vegan

Why are you a vegan if you care so little for the welfare of the squirrels ? You are coming across as being hypocritical
PietariKontio · 21/01/2021 15:37

Why do you want rid of them, dead or not? Humans build an ever increasing amount of buildings and then get surprised when animals appear on/near them. It has as much right to be there as you do.

DayBath · 21/01/2021 15:38

This is a total wind up. Reporting OP.

pleasecaffeinateme · 21/01/2021 15:38

I'd love to get little squirrel visitors! I'm sad thinking about them being killed now. Nice one op👍

NoOneOwnsTheRainbow · 21/01/2021 15:40

Actually grey squirrels didn't kill off red squirrels it was national deforestation for industrialisation that did it because it destroyed their native habitat. But we didn't understand our impact on the environment when the red squirrels started disappearing so we blamed the grey ons because they're immigrants then we've carried on with this just-so story in spite of the evidence from Ireland. Despite the fact they didn't swim across the Atlantic they were brought here by humans who now want to wipe them out for existing.
And god knows why a vegan doesn't want squirrels. Just put some nuts out.

Obvs a wind up, the OP has not returned.

OP, why don't you read a book or clean out your pants drawer or anything more productive than posting weird shit on MN

I'm veggie, but still, I take your point!

Firstly, @Counttotenandtryagain - like other posters, I don’t understand why a committed vegan wants the squirrels exterminated, just for being on your balcony. If they are doing damage, you could try scaring them off whenever you see them.

And dead animals are a part of nature. Even if there were no domesticated animals (for food or as pets) there would still be wild animals, and they will not live forever. As a vegan, if you did find a dead squirrel on your balcony, you could give it a respectful send-off - yes, you would have to touch a dead animal, but why is that worse, in your eyes, than calling the exterminators?

I love the little furry monsters and have the same problems. The little sods dug up two newly played troughs and threw all the plants over the side of the balcony. I thought I was doing daft when I looked out to see empty thoughts!

They like some plants more than others - they obviously don’t like what’s growing there now as they just scowl at me through the window!

1dayatatime · 21/01/2021 15:52

Squirrels are basically rats with good PR.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 21/01/2021 15:54

Rats in fur coats. But they are so cuuuuuuute!

TheSpottedZebra · 21/01/2021 15:55

If any murderous vegans, or indeed anyone else does want to try to protect their bulbs, try chicken wire or any wire mesh over the pot. You can even bury it in the pot, just above the bulbs if you want to hide it.

Also, chilli powder on the soil will deter squirrels (but not birds), but you obviously have to refresh that rather a lot.

So, you can tell pest control they have gone, and leave them alone. Feed them away from the building.

I assume you are not ethical in your veganism. Just one of those 'on the bandwagon' vegans.

Spray some citronella and leave them alone. They will be killed not caught and released. Have they hurt you? Damaged your property?

Just check for entry points and get them blocked when the squirrels are out, if they have access.

LazyName · 21/01/2021 15:56

You’re a vegan but called pest control about some squirrels that are outside, where they live?? Hmm
