Bloody squirrels

So sat at home today on a day off and noticed a couple of squirrels on the balcony. I think they might be living on the balcony next door as there’s a gap between the two balconies. I’ve rung the housing association abs their going to get pest control to get in touch. But I’m a vegan abs the thought of finding a dead squirrel on the balcony makes me feel a bit queasy 😬.
Any suggestions on how to discourage the buggers. I’m on the second floor.

This kind of thing drives me nuts.

I feed a Fox under my flat window. Have done for nearly a year. Last night he brought a mate and I fed her too. I always have nuts/seeds on me when I go for a walk for potential bird and squirrel meets. I feed the pigeons. And tube mice.

I’m not a vegan.

OwlWearingGlasses · 21/01/2021 14:49

Feed them if you don't want to them to die!

Livpool · 21/01/2021 14:49

We have loads on our garden - I just feed them

CremeEggThief · 21/01/2021 14:54

YABU. You should be grateful for the free entertainment the squirrels provide and that you live somewhere green enough for them to even be there.

EllenRipley · 21/01/2021 14:54

Eh? Is this a wind up?
Vegan wants to get rid of (have killed) native, hungry wildlife... uhm 🤔

Honestly??

Indecisive12 · 21/01/2021 14:57

Vegetarian here so can sort of relate on that front. We have a family of squirrels living in our trees at the back, we feed them nuts and just enjoy watching them. They’ve only fulfilled the ‘pest’ title when they chewed through the wire on our outdoor string lights.

Notthecarwashagain · 21/01/2021 14:58

I love it when squirrels come to visit. And also when my dog goes out and they shout at her Grin

If someone decided to call pest control about them, I'd think that that person was a nobhead.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 21/01/2021 14:58

@ellenripley

Highly unlikely they're native.

JustCallMeGriffin · 21/01/2021 14:58

I'm not sure you understand what being vegan means if you want to kill squirrels (because pest control don't gently catch them to release in the wild!)

TheSpottedZebra · 21/01/2021 14:59

Yeah they're not native. Reds are native and the greys out-competed them, and gave them disease.

But still, that's not enough to sentence them all to death.

Elai1978 · 21/01/2021 15:00

No one should be feeding grey squirrels, they’re vermin! Do you put food out for the rats?

TheSpottedZebra · 21/01/2021 15:01

Pest control categorically will not relocate them. I think they're classed as vermin, so it is against the law to release them, so no catch and take to the countryside.

It's probably air rife if it's an ethical pest controller, or more likely, poison for a long horrible death.

Hoppinggreen · 21/01/2021 15:03

I suppose OP feels it’s ok to condemn them to a horrible death as long as she doesn’t eat them afterwards

SmidgenofaPigeon · 21/01/2021 15:05

Well no they’re not native, but they didn’t ask to be brought here did they?

While I wouldn’t specifically put food out FOR a rat, I don’t get up in arms about seeing one out and about and eating under a bird feeder like some people do. What harm is it causing exactly?

Bluntness100 · 21/01/2021 15:05

Thr op knows they won’t be relocated, she is just worried about seeing a dead one. She called to have them killed.

It’s fairly fucking hardcore. Most peoooe wouldn’t do this, and would only do it as a very last resort, if substantial damage was being caused.

I think you’ve misunderstood what veganjsm is about op. I’d rethink that if I was you.

LegendDairy · 21/01/2021 15:05

Why would it suddenly be dead on your balcony?

SmidgenofaPigeon · 21/01/2021 15:06

Rabbits aren’t native either come to that, but if you saw one hopping about on your lawn would you be straight on to pest control?

Bluntness100 · 21/01/2021 15:07

@LegendDairy

They typically poison them. So yes she may find one dead on her balcony. It’s a nasty way to die.
Trouba · 21/01/2021 15:09

My university campus used to have a tonne of squirrels, they'd sometimes come in the window and go bonkers around the kitchen before heading back out again.
Why are you calling pest control for some squirrels living in between a balcony, just ignore them Confused

Bluntness100 · 21/01/2021 15:13

Never seen a thread like this. Where a load of carnivores get on a vegans case for trying to have innocent animals slaughtered for no reason.

Heybeendyingtomeetyou · 21/01/2021 15:14

Any suggestions on how to discourage the buggers

Open the door and just scare them off. They will go and hang out somewhere that is happy to see them.

Elai1978 · 21/01/2021 15:14

They used to get dealt with using an air rifle when I was a kid. Even further back you used to get cash from taking their tails to the post office.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 21/01/2021 15:14

Could you get an owl and attach it to a stick and poke it out the window whenever a squirrel appears?

SchrodingersImmigrant · 21/01/2021 15:15

😁 It's amazing, isn't it. And I am one who eanted squirrel for Christmas roast (yes, they do sell them really)😂 But I draw line at killing them when they are just outside doing what animals do. And yeah. That includes rats runing over the garden once a month
LeaveMyDamnJam · 21/01/2021 15:16

Leave the little buggers alone.
