To have zero sympathy for the fishing industry?

AgeLikeWine · 18/01/2021 19:19

The U.K. fishing industry voted overwhelmingly for Brexit ; 92% voted Leave according to a poll from June 2016 (source : The Guardian).

Now they are bleating about the massive logistical and administrative problems and delays that they are encountering in trying to export their catch into EU markets. Today, fish transportation companies have been driving their lorries around central London to protest about the situation.

But this is what they voted for : to ‘take back control of our waters’. They voted Leave in the full knowledge that most of the U.K. catch was exported to Europe, and that that would obviously be more difficult after Brexit, so they should suck it up & stop whinging.

@Cheeseandwin5

I know people say they were taken in by the lies, but I don't know any club where non members get a better deal (or even the same) as members and yet this was basically the line being swallowed (hook line and sinker as it were). It didn't make any sense and I think it is more likely that it was a more nasty side within ppl that was seduced, hate, xenophobia, greed and selfishness. Brexiters must have know even in a small way this could happen, but they thought it would be other ppl who would suffer. Funnily enough all the top shakers of the movement, have made sure they are all ok though. Sympathy???? The more I thing about it , the more angry I am at these people and the suffering they have caused. I will reserve my sympathy for all of us who didnt vote for it and the bleak outlook we are facing
This No sympathy from me

A lot of our young people have had the chance to travel - one of the best gifts we can give our children - ripped from their innocent hands.

For what ?

For this. Some stinking fish, trade collapsing, and a slow return of bitter elders who will be needing care and treatment from a country that has evicted more carers and medical staff than it can ever attract or train in future.

It's like waking up to find your OK sold your season ticket for a set of pogo sticks. OK, you can now go where you want. But all of a sudden you don't really feel like travelling.

Narniacalling · 21/01/2021 12:46

Gove is still lying to them.

And they're looking to get 100k per business from the taxpayer to compensate them for their own stupidity.

And who do you think will get the brunt of fishermen's anger about the situation they voted themselves into?
The liars who sold them Brexit?
Or the people who warned them of the consequences of brexit?

My bet is that the liars will get off scott free and manage to convince these fools it's everybody else's fault, but definitely not the fault of their glorious Brexit.

Kendodd · 21/01/2021 13:54

And another thing, leavers whinging about being call thick. How would you describe someone who voted to erect trade barriers between their product and their market? Even the fucking fish wouldn't be that stupid.

Kendodd · 21/01/2021 13:55

Gove is still lying to them.

And they'll believe it I'll bet.

Jellykat · 21/01/2021 18:22

Love how we were berated and named 'remoaners'.. who's moaning now?? Hmm

Also, it's a little unpatriotic of them not to Get Behind Brexit anyway.

Traitors.

Believe it when they get it Wink
Announcing money is VERY DIFFERENT from actually handing it out

Project Fear innit

NiceGerbil · 21/01/2021 20:10

What has been depressing me from the get go. Is that if it all went tits up after Brexit (and while I hoped it wouldn't, I knew it almost certainly would) the Brexit people would all blame it on Europe/ remoaners/ anything except Brexit itself and the totally likely issues. That's what gets my goat, the inability to take responsibility for what they chose.

Way back we had Boris etc saying we spoke to Europe about xyz and they said no. And then Europe would say erm no they're not even answering the phone let alone negotiating.

Time and time again Europe said the UK were being spare with the truth. I believe them.

I mean it's all hopelessly rubbish.

Miljea · 24/01/2021 19:14
@miljea we can export all over the world and complete paperwork etc for this all the time, the trouble is they are not used to doing this and time taken etc , so this may improve
Also in general probably lots of places are ordering less, lots of restaurants etc across europe are also shut / less busy so likely also would of been a small affect as well
Lets see if there is still these same issues in a month.
Yes, let's see.

Let's see if 'things being a little bit different' is all it is.....

ListeningQuietly · 24/01/2021 19:17

I admit that the crunch was not in the form I expected
BUT
this, real, version of the crunch
is much more damaging and will be much more long lasting than the one I predicted
and will result in the loss of many more UK jobs
for ever Sad

Grendalsmum · 24/01/2021 19:23

You voted for it - fucking own it. "We were mislead ... " Aww, 48% saw it coming - are we any brighter? Don't think so, just less eager to believe zenaphobic soundbites. Now we're all fucked. Cheers!

FreshFreesias · 24/01/2021 19:28

Such a snobbish post.
Why not actually come down from your prosperous ivory tower, OP, and actually talk to fishermen to find out what they think, find out how they have been dismissed for years rather than post on this middle class echo chamber.

Peterhead is dead 93% of its traders voted for this now what ?
Porcupineintherough · 24/01/2021 19:38

"Middle class echo chamber" is the last resort of those who haven't a leg to stand on. The fishing industry has been working hard to destroy itself for years - years of overfishing, fish stocks collapsing, ecological degradation then this. It's hardly surprising no one is interested in listening to a word they say, theyve not been listening for decades.

bellinisurge · 24/01/2021 20:39

I guessing, and this is just a guess, that fishing communities want to sell fish. And not have them rot unsold. Just a guess.

How do you know how prosperous or what class the OP is?

We know what 92% think. They wanted to leave the EU. They haven't been dismissed they've won. They've got what they want. They should be celebrating. The 8% I feel for though.

CornishPastyDownUnder · 24/01/2021 21:21

Me too-zero sympathy, im vegan : )

Kendodd · 24/01/2021 21:22

Why don't you tell us what they think?

Beck30 · 24/01/2021 21:31

Not sure i have much sympathy for hoping Brexit would lead to 'sunny uplands' for their industry. But I can understand their clinging to any hopes for an improvement. Like agriculture, or manufacturing in the 1980s, it is a part of the economy that the people who do it are born into and the UK as with many other countries becomes less competitive as the decades go by..... as lower income countries can produce the same on lower incomes. I feel quite sorry in many ways. Perhaps in years to come accounting or other areas where the UK are currently strong will also lose out to global competitors
