To think DH is being ridiculous to not eat this?

Mushroom pie with instructions on packet to cook from chilled and to defrost in the refrigerator. I'm running out of time so defrosted on counter. He found packet and is now moaning and refusing to eat it because it might give him food poisoning. AIBU to think he is being absurd?

The pie is a Pieminister one from sainsburys. Definitely no chicken. DH has since seen the error of his ways and realised he was being a wally.

Sorry, but it is not safe to defrost food on a counter at room temperature. I know you’ve been socialised to think it is safe, but that is peculiar to the British. It’s one of the disgusting habits that shocked me when I lived in U.K. along with washing dishes in a tub of soapy water with food bits floating about and not rinsing them before putting them in the drying rack. Blergh.

Ahhh yes the British

I vaguely remember them

Didn't they all die, due to food poisoning? 🤔

Cauterize · 17/01/2021 17:09

Firstly it has no meat in it, secondly it's winter so I'm sure your kitchen doesn't resemble the tropics?

Basically yes of course it's fine! He is being utterly ridiculous and can have toast for his dinner.

KirstenBlest · 17/01/2021 17:13

Pieminister pies are tasty.

Nunoftheother · 17/01/2021 17:15

@Amarilike

He’d be mortified at me. I’m cooking a whole chicken that was still partially frozen!!!! Shock
Mortified at you? Confused
TatianaBis · 17/01/2021 17:17

I’ve never had food poisoning from home cooking in 50 years of life.

Most people I know who had had food poisoning have got in in a restaurant. I’ve had food poisoning after eating shellfish in a restaurant.

He's not right, and neither are you. It's basic food hygiene to understand why the guidelines exist and how you can safely adapt them.

It’s perfectly fine to defrost at room temperature. It’s not gold standard but it will not do healthy people any harm in all but the rarest cases.

More seriously - there is enough xenophobia in the world right now without you adding it to a mushroom pie debate, to which it has no relevance. I’ve lived in a lot of countries and sticking stuff on a counter to defrost is not a particularly British trait. 🙄

Dirty Brits.

Yeh I know as opposed to the french like my fil, who kept a cockerel in the oven for days and reheated the whole thing twice.

Oui

ItCouldBeBunnies · 17/01/2021 17:21

I chucked a frozen steak on the counter for DH at lunchtime. It's still there now. I've yet to poison him after 15 years of my questionable cooking.

IamGateshead · 17/01/2021 17:21

to be honest, most men would prefer meat for a main course. Perhaps this is more the issue? My Hubby would always prefer meat to be part of the meal I cook.

Shushpuppy · 17/01/2021 17:23

Nope he's vegetarian so wanting meat really not the issue. He was just being daft.

Most men? What a ridiculous thing to say! Just because your ‘hubby’ (🤮 ) prefers you to cook meat, doesn’t mean most others do - some of them even cook vegetarian meals themselves you know.
Cherrysoup · 17/01/2021 17:24

I defrost stuff on the counter. He’s ridiculous.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 17/01/2021 17:25

Some people are bizarre about things like that. I used to work with somebody who would make a curry on a Wednesday (say), eat a portion, then freeze the rest and bring a frozen portion in in a coolbag on Thursday, then defrost it in the microwave before heating it up!

He was worried about the food hygiene implications of leaving it cooked in the fridge overnight. Confused

It was their own fault. They kept putting chicken in the pies clearly labelled mushroom pies...

Got to love a sweeping generalisation Grin

Where are you finding all your men? The Paleolithic era?

Oh, yeah. I'd forgotten about them.

Which is silly of me - considering they are mentioned in all food safety warnings and training - as a stark reminder of the dangers of defrosting on the worktop.

SecondRow · 17/01/2021 17:42

Are there European or worldwide food poisoning league tables, I wonder? What are you measuring those stats against, Plan?

BeaSmithers · 17/01/2021 17:45

If he doesn't want to eat it then he can either cook something else himself or go without. It really isn't worth pandering to him. He sounds like an idiot.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 17/01/2021 17:49

@KirstenBlest

Don't you cook your pies from scratch?
Peak MN right there GrinGrin Yeah OP, and why didn't you forage the mushrooms yourself, you slattern?
PinkSparklyPussyCat · 17/01/2021 17:49

@PlanDeRaccordement

No, sorry he is right. It is basic food hygiene to never defrost anything on the counter. He is especially right if it is a chicken and mushroom pie and most mushroom pies have chicken on them.

I know many British think it’s alright to defrost on the counter, it’s culturally engrained with a dose of “never did me any harm” , but no. Basic food hygiene to never defrost on counter.

The last time I tried to defrost in the fridge it took 2 days to thaw pork chops!

My 'hubby' is grateful for any food I cook! As I am when he cooks.

Does your 'hubby' get penis portions too?
