To think DH is being ridiculous to not eat this?

Mushroom pie with instructions on packet to cook from chilled and to defrost in the refrigerator. I'm running out of time so defrosted on counter. He found packet and is now moaning and refusing to eat it because it might give him food poisoning. AIBU to think he is being absurd?

You lost me at ‘mushroom’ pie 🤮

movingonup20 · 17/01/2021 16:37

I always defrost on the side, never made me ill yet

fireplaceburning · 17/01/2021 16:39

@KirstenBlest was joking yes? I thought it was obviously tongue in cheek. Always amuses me when people read things differently 🤣

fireplaceburning · 17/01/2021 16:39

Oh and yes eat the pie!!

MrsClatterbuck · 17/01/2021 16:39

I once attended a Tupperware part and one of the items being demonstrated was a container for defrosting food. It a colander like tray to set the food on so the liquid would drip into the tray below. The demonstrator was horrified that anyone would not use on of these and defrost food on a plate on the worktop and leave it in it's own juices. Don't remember anything being mentioned about doing it in the fridge. I did not buy one as I had enough crap taking up room in my cupboards

bobbojobbo · 17/01/2021 16:40

No, sorry he is right. It is basic food hygiene to never defrost anything on the counter

He's not right, and neither are you. It's basic food hygiene to understand why the guidelines exist and how you can safely adapt them.

And aren't you the loon who argued that chicken and beef as not food if it came from McDonalds? You really should not give out food advice when you don't know what food is!

Oblomov20 · 17/01/2021 16:42

I always defrost on the side. If I put it in the fridge, it doesn't defrost!

Throughhistory · 17/01/2021 16:43

He is especially right if it is a chicken and mushroom pie and most mushroom pies have chicken on them

Grin It's a mushroom pie, the OP was perfectly clear. I'd eat it.

There's not mushroom for argument really, is there? 😂😂
EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 17/01/2021 16:49

the only time i defrost in the fridge is when i buy something frozen and cant fit it in the freezer

KirstenBlest · 17/01/2021 16:50
@kirstenblest does it sound like they cook their pies from scratch? What a ridiculous question...
@ChristmasJumpers Pardon me for having a sense of humour. Smile

bigbluebus · 17/01/2021 16:50

We ate 3 individual pies for lunch today that had (partially) defrosted on the kitchen worktop. I heated them for longer in the oven because they still felt slightly frozen. I always defrost things out of the fridge. Sometimes I put them on the workbench in the garage or the room we use as a gym (as radiator is turned off in there) but I also use the kitchen worktop as well if I need something to defrost quicker. I haven't had food poisoning for 28 years after I ate from a salad bar at Pizza Hut. Your DH is being unreasonable - unless the pie has been on the worktop for days - which it doesn't sound as if it has.

Ameliablue · 17/01/2021 16:52

Was long as it is cooked straight away to piping hot it will be fine.

PinkiOcelot · 17/01/2021 16:53

I defrosted my turkey on the bench. Can’t say I’ve ever defrosted anything in the fridge.

He’s being ridiculous. Cheese sarnie for him!

I know many British think it’s alright to defrost on the counter, it’s culturally engrained with a dose of “never did me any harm” , but no. Basic food hygiene to never defrost on counter.

Why have you decided that the OP's mushroom pie is a chicken and mushroom pie?
PlanDeRaccordement · 17/01/2021 16:58

@Fuckingcrustybread
I haven’t decided it is a chicken and mushroom pie. That’s why I said if it is....
Comprendez?

Ha ha ha! Where did the chicken come from?!

He is right is he? Despite many many people on this thread saying they defrost on the side and all has been well?!

Ha ha , me too ! Love mushrooms, love pastry but can't think of anything more bland than the two put together Shock

Sorry, but it is not safe to defrost food on a counter at room temperature. I know you’ve been socialised to think it is safe, but that is peculiar to the British. It’s one of the disgusting habits that shocked me when I lived in U.K. along with washing dishes in a tub of soapy water with food bits floating about and not rinsing them before putting them in the drying rack. Blergh.

sadpapercourtesan · 17/01/2021 17:04

Shit out of luck then, isn't he? Grin

DahliaMacNamara · 17/01/2021 17:05

I freeze bits of raw chicken for DH, who is the only meat eater in the house. They come out a few hours before I plan to cook them and are left out on a plate to defrost. To defrost them in the fridge, they'd need to be in there pretty much at the same time as they went in the freezer. Unworkable.

M&S do a nice mushroom pie. Still waiting to discover the identity of OP's pie.

partyatthepalace · 17/01/2021 17:05

Yup, he’s crackers (or he hates mushrooms)

TatianaBis · 17/01/2021 17:08

My fridge is seriously cold. I usually defrost on the side including meat.

Never had a problem touch wood.

PlanDeRaccordement · 17/01/2021 17:08

No wonder 2.4 million of you get food poisoning every year. You’re taking unnecessary risks by defrosting things on counters at room temperature.

KirstenBlest · 17/01/2021 17:08

@Soubriquet

Do you go out and scavenge for your pies when you cook from scratch?
I think you mean forage. Not much of a pie person.

Do you milk the cow you need to get your milk?
Who says I drink milk.

Do you then churn that milk for your butter and cheese?
I don't think cheese is churned.
